Description
The all consuming darkness has you battle-scarred submarine in a vice-like grip. As you navigate your sub through enemy waters, the only thing that protects you from a cold and premature death is six inches of solid steel. As if life itself, 5,700 metres below the ocean surface wasn’t difficult enough, the threat of impending conflict is about to challenge your very existence…

In the distance, a glimmer of light pierces the darkness and shock waves begin to roll your craft. An unknown object descends upon you. Systems indicate Torpedo! You act immediately to avoid destruction and lock your sights on the incoming torpedo. You release a Ripper missile and begin your descent, but you must go faster. DIVE! DIVE! DIVE!

The predecessor to the AquaNox series, Archimedean Dynasty is a submarine-simulation set in a post-apocalyptic world on the ocean floor. Assuming the role of mercenary, Emerald “Dead Eye” Flint, you must navigate the dangers that lurk below, including corrupt conglomerates, fanatical cults and cut-throat pirates. With a rich and atmospheric open-world, compelling narrative and dialogue interaction, and a deep customisation and combat system that rewards tactical thinking, Archimedean Dynasty is a submersive experience for nautical adventurers that like to talk the talk and sail the sail.
  • Over 60 deadly mission to get your heart racing!
  • Command 4 different ships and equip them from an impressive arsenal of over 30 lethal weapon systems!
  • Advanced AI puts your tactical fighting skills to the ultimate test when you engage in combat against extremely intelligent and cunning enemies!
  • Underwater motion simulation with drifting and currents to make you feel like you’re actually at the helm!
  • Stimulating storyline lets you interact with over 100 characters

Amazing underwater experience

My buddy and I got our first PCs xmas 1996. The first game you bought was Archimedean Dynasty (called "Schleichfahrt" on german market). Unfortunately we were too dumb to play it. Used to simple action games like Doom we didn't read the manual and just drove around without a plan. We were soon frustreded because there was nothing to see and nothing happended. Now that I've bought the GoG Version, I have a second chance to play it and it's still a blast after all those years. The adaption is great. It included the 3Dfx patch so you can use nGlide. The story is great. Controls are easy to learn (hit "H" to see the mapping when driving) and the missions are fun. Some YouTube videos helped me to start off because the game is not very self explaining (which was our problem back then). I give only a 4-star rating because the manual and the weapon handbook are missing here. Fortunately you can easily get them on the internet.

A Yin Yang of Awesome and Terrible

Archimedean Dynasty is a piece of art. As a vehicle of interactive storytelling, it's masterfully done. The world is well-realized, the characters are likable, albeit short-lived, and the overall tone and atmosphere are great. The core gameplay is also well-designed and piloting your submarine, even with cursor controls (no mouselook, sorry), feels weighty and believable. This stuff alone is enough to warrant the 3 stars I gave it. Where AD fails spectacularly is being a piece of software. Crashes are common and simple commands may only work half the time. Event flags sometimes don't trigger and the missions themselves can be vague if not outright confusing. Endgame enemies pass thru walls without any explanation or attempt to handwave this oversight by the developers. They just do. The missions become increasingly similar and lengthy due to the sheer number and resilience of bullet-sponge enemies and the world building between missions runs thin, sometimes amounting to just 3 or 4 lines of dialog. Basically, the game overstays its welcome by a long shot. So prepare to really love a game for the first half and merely tolerate it the rest of the way thru.

Just awesome...

I can't say how much I loved GOG when I saw that they offer this game. I played this game shortly after it came out and it was one of the first video games I've ever played. Tried to get it to run several times in the last years (I still have the original CD) but I failed everytime. This game ignited my love for video games. It has everything a good game needs. Good gameplay, deep, dark and engaging story, lots of possibilities to upgrade your ship, good dialoges and unforgiving enemies. This game was the predecessor of AquaNox, just a lot better. The graphics are pretty outdated, of course, but it will generate more atmosphere than a lot of todays games when you drift with the current through an underwater canyon full of mines and a torpedo coming out of nowhere. If you like Sci-Fi like games with a good story, just buy this game and learn why so many people still love their old games from their youth. I even realized that back then, the sound of the games wasn't working and I played half of the game without sound. Never saw the intro with audio... Thank you, GOG, for this.

Fantastic immersive experience

This game has it all - a protagonist with a great backstory, a postapocalyptic (under)world divided between different factions maintaining a fragile status quo, great story with a sense of progression, fun and responsive combat system and wonderfully designed missions. The game was ahead of its time and its core elements ensure hours of fun and great experience even today, more than 20 years after its creation. It might take a little while to adjust to the controls and the fact that unlike submarines today you actually have to stick to the bottom or risk doses of radiation. P.S.: This game has the power to keep you from going to bed, so beware:)
