Description
The Gods of Olympus have abandoned humanity, leaving you to perish without their benevolence. Take up arms against the Gods, climb Mount Olympus, and take their divine powers for yourself to ensure mankind’s survival! Apotheon is a fast and brutal 2D action game with a striking art style and heroic narrative based on Ancient Greek Mythology.
  • Brutal and bloody bronze-aged combat! Slay your enemies with swords, spears, arrows, and other ancient weapons of war.
  • Explore the massive open world of Mount Olympus! Battle mythical beings and search for divine treasure across the Forests of Artemis, the Palaces of Apollo, and other sanctuaries of the Gods.
  • Guide the rise of Nikandreos, humanity’s last hero. Interact with a colourful cast of fully voiced legendary characters throughout a rich single-player experience.
  • Challenge your friends to single combat! In one versus one local multiplayer, pit your skills against other would-be heroes of Greece.
  • Learn a little about Greek Mythology! Apotheon tries to stay true to its source material. Read an excerpt from the Iliad about Diomedes before you stick a Xiphos through his Aspis.

A unique thematic experience

You should buy this game just to validate the creators' commitment to theme, art and ambiance. Inventory management is cumbersome and the controls sometimes wonky, but that does not detract at all from the unique experience that Apotheon offers. Instead of generic medieval fantasy or post-apocaliptic, you get a familiar yet fascinating setting mixing Greek mythology and material culture - instead of the gritty or realistic look most games go for these days, Apotheon commits to a design aesthetic 100% in line with its theme. And it's not just a gimmick: the game is consistently gorgeous, each domain of Olympus with its own palette, background music and overall feel. Environments feel alive, as if they existed outside and beyond the protagonist's adventure: visit the forest of Artemis and you will encounter drunk and horny satyrs, as well as hunters and wild animals roaming around; go to Hades instead, and you will be haunted by the desperate pleas of the damned who live there and skeletons who just won't stay down. And the gods themselves hardly behave in a predictable way, each of them presenting a fun twist in the basic narrative. Overall, this must be one of the best matches of design and theme that I have seen since Limbo or Bastion. Even if you are not a fan of 'metroidvania'-style games (and I am not), you cannot help but appreciate the beauty of the environments, which in my case is what motivates me to explore further. Yes, there are treasures and weapons to find, special items to craft, and a whole hub market where you can buy and upgrade your gear. But I would say above all this is a game that keeps you guessing how the designers will make the next level look and feel different when working off such simple premise as 2d side-scrolling. The tutorial level alone is so pretty that it justifies the asking price. But keep going and you might just be enthralled by the wonders of mount Olympus. Seriously, reward these developers now!

Pottery with clunky physics

I got bored with this game after a few hours and just uninstalled it, which is a first for me. It's not bad, it's just really nothing special, which is shame, cause I was looking forward to this. To sum up my experience: the art is great, the voice acting is poor, the story is average, the physics are weird. It was simply not worth the trouble for me.

Polished, diverse and unique art style

I have this game not via GOG, but still I would like to tell you this is a real gem! The art style as you can see is beautiful, everything you see and hear is of high quality. If you like the Greek god mythology and ancient history you'll love this! The story fits right up that ally. It really pulled me in and engaged me to go further. Together with all the signs along the way with historical writings on specific gods (Yes I read them). The world is detailed, large but never feels completely empty. Together with some hidden places where you can find more upgrades, recipes, or special weapons you can sink some good hours in this game. The fighting looks simple but gets more diverse later on. With each weapon having its' own style of play. smaller weapons are faster, but have limited range, bigger weapons are slower and have a deadzone (too close and you'll miss). You can play with any weapon, and can upgrade any of your prefered type of weapon, or max them all, if you have the money. In terms of controls, I see some complaints , I have had no difficulty moving around. I played with my xbox 360 controller. pvp is still in beta, have not been able to play that. getting used to it was about the first few minutes, after that it felt logical to me. Really liked it and seeing it on sale, it would be a definate buy for me, really recommend it.

Greek Mothology come to life

Apotheon is a great game with its main focus on art and atmosphere. The game is very true to greek mythology and uses gameplay, music and graphics to reenforce the personalities of all the gods portrait in the game. Whether it is the raging battlefury of Ares or the playful frivolity of Dionysus, you will feel in whos domain you are. The Gameplay is quite nice and different enemy types, weapons and interesting Bossfights make for a good experience. There are puzzles and plattforming tasks in the game but they are pretty strait forward. There is no story to speak of and the game is clearly not meant to be palyed to master its gameplay or enjoy overcoming tough challanges. Apotheon is really all about its greek mythology theme and it delivers that theme in a great and unique way.

A must have for fans of Greek mythology

Apotheon is set in ancient Greece and draws heavily from its mythology. If you are even remotely interested in this setting, this will be the game for you. It references heavily to the ancient gods and their function in the lives of the ancient Greeks. The art style is also a plus. While sometimes it makes navigation a bit difficult, it truly draws you into the world of Apotheon and is very pretty. Combat may take some time to get used to, but once you get the hang of it, the system is very fluid and satisfying, with knockbacks when dealing or being dealt damage and some light gore. You can dodge attacks and throw your weapon, which makes combat feel very visceral and fast. While the game is certainly playable, you might notice frame dips in some areas. Overall, the game is very good and kept surprising me with cool references to Greek mythology. In this regard, it is the first game since Titan Quest to have me really appreciate the effort put into the lore. A must have, especially when on sale.
