... cannot believe that I am playing this game, again after all these years. Amazing! My soul leaps with joy! TY GoG!
Best thing - this is not a game you will beat in a day or two - you are going to play and enjoy this game for weeks!
Tip: Explore and uncover every square inch of every map you encounter. There are things you will need to advance the game. Other than that - just enjoy one of the greatest RPGs of all time!
I played this game so many times, and I love how replayable it is. You can be a fighter, a mage, or any combination between the two.
The setting really stands out compared to most games. Yes, it is the typical 'evil tyrant hell-bent on destroying the world,' but the game's world is so unique. It can best be described as desolate, hopeless, and bleak. This adds the sense that you are its last hope, struggling to do your best to lift this sense of oppression from the world once and for all. Characters will seem hopeless and broken, but your character is always hopeful, always positive, and always uplifting.
The enemies are also uniquely designed, and each area is different and interesting. The puzzles aren't too difficult, mostly opening doors, dodging moving balls, and dealing with spinners.
I also have to mention the spells. They are truly well done. You have the four basic elements - fire, water, wind, and earth, and you also have flesh (healing) and the void, which I won't spoil. Each spell has a beautiful animation and truly awesome effects.
Give this game a go, you won't regret it!
One of the most underrated games in my opinion and one of the reasons why I decided to make GOG my main "platform" for gaming. I fell in love with this one way back in 1996, when my friend invited my to his house and we watched his older brother play some games on his PC. I have never seen such games before, and Anvil of Dawn was one of them. The graphics and sound blew me away, as well as the FPP combat with melee weapons and drawn magic symbols. Only after 10 years I managed to find this gem (I did not know te title back then) and played it myself. This is one great experience. The design itself deserves a lot of praise, such a variety of creatures. I find the depressing tone of the game very interesting, feels like fighting already lost war. A lot of freedom is available to the player, so there's plenty of possibilities: what character to play, in what way specialize (what weapons, or magic) and in what order explore the areas. There's several annoying puzzles, but they do not disturb the overall experience. A nice touch is the fact that you can meet the other characters that you did not choose at the start.
I've never written a review on GOG before but just a few hours of this game inspired me to. I'm a big fan of grid-based dungeon crawlers like Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder, and this one plays like a more simplified (you only control 1 character), but better looking version of those. The dungeons are not crazy complex like those in EOB, and with the amazing automap you never get lost or frustrated. Overall it's totally worth the price and I wish more games like this exist!
Anvil of Dawn truly surprised me, a tale wavered in simple heroic deeds but told in a masterfully manner. Basically, the story, albeit being pretty simple (kill bad guy, good guys wins) is the thing that kept me going most of the game.
That's where the problem is: if the story is quite, actually, more than good, the gameplay is simple.... a little too much simple.
Not enough to keep you (me, in this case) playing until the end. The repetition of tasks and fighting (although there a nice variety of spells) starts to be excruciating boring right in the middle of the game, also because maps and number of repeating enemies are enormous (however, should you love grinding, this game is absolutely perfect!).
Besides that, the game offers, and this is where it truly shines, astonishing graphics and magnificent soundtracks (The anvil of dawn/underground city <3), all to support what I found out to be a magical tale of desperate battles and difficult journeys (trust me, the game is amazing at that).
So, YES! Sure, this game requires a little bit of dedication but this perpetual weaving of sacrifice and impeding doom are really worth it!
