Welcome to Anachronox, an abandoned alien artificial planet at the centre of the universe, now home to lowlifes, thieves, and scoundrels. Here we join Sylvester "Sly Boots" Bucelli--a down on his luck PI--and a cast of 6 other unlikely heroes on their quest to discover who or what is trying to destroy the universe. They are the only ones that believe it is happening, and the only ones that can do something about it.
This title is a very unique game in many ways. The combination of jRPG style turn-based combat, extraordinary characters with their own personalities, an epic and brilliantly told story, colorful graphics, and absolutely hilarious humor is something very rare. You will travel through galaxies, explore bizarre planets, and journey through space and time. There are no easy choices in this game, no obvious, predictable events, no black and white characters. This complexity made the game well reviewed--it has showed up on PC Gamer's Top 100 PC Games list three times!--and will keep you fascinated and amazed for many hours.
Great mix of Japanese and Western style RPG elements with great humor, a gripping story, and a very unique cast of characters.
Excellent storytelling via professional-quality cutscenes and dialogue will accompany you through the entire 50+ hour long adventure.
Huge world to explore with many secrets to discover and mysteries to solve. One playthrough is, by far, not enough to see it all.
I played this game when it came out for about 10 minutes at a CompUSA(remember those?) and wanted it but kind of forgot about it. Saw it on here and gave it a buy. The charactesr, the story, all seem pretty awesome except there is one flaw to this game that I can't get past. The camera. I may be in the minority but I just can't play this game without getting a headache. I don't know what Ion Storm was thinking but this is horrific. This game came out after FF7, 8, and even 9 so I wish that it would have just taken a step from those games and just made the camera more fixed. It's the Starebears that did me in, to be honest.
I enjoyed Anachronox. Not the sometimes frequent back-and-forth between locations or the go-and-collect side quests, but there was humor and personality everywhere and combat was fun. The ongoing optimization of scarab-weapons engaged me far longer than I'm proud to admit.
Anachronox lifts itself beyond is rivals with many, many clever japes. The images of your robot friend translating 'science' or playing in the ball pit are classics. The prophet who needs something stinky and chewy to concentrate. The ham-handed superhero named "The Fist." The list goes on and on.
The plot is lively but linear, and searching for the key to advance can be frustrating. I highly recommend a walkthrough.
I'd heard that Anachronox was an absolutely amazing game. What it actually is is very unique and special, but poorly aged and with a lot of flaws that bog it down. The game world is very well thought out and the characters are great and have loads of personality. By the end, your party will include a cranky old archaeologist, a cute toy robot, an assassin/exotic dancer, a brilliant scientist, a depressed comic book superhero, and even an entire planet that has voted by committee to shrink itself down and travel with you. Even Fatima, the cursor you use to navigate the game's menus and pick up items, is a fully developed character with her own tragic backstory and inner life. You'll travel from world to world, never quite knowing what the game will throw at you next.
Despite all of those positives, the game is, as someone said below, TEDIOUS. I started the game 4 years ago and only finished it tonight because I kept taking long breaks, unable to stay engaged due to the muddy graphics, constant backtracking, glacial combat, obscure secrets and somewhat dull and repetitive environments. Thank god the game has a dedicated fast-forward button to speed things up in some places. The game's humor is very hit or miss, and can be a little tiresome, as well as at odds with the few parts of the story that try to be serious. The magic system is very poorly explained in the game and hard to figure out- how do these bugs work, what does leveling them up do? Some of the spells like fire or freeze are pretty self-explanatory, but what the hell is a spell called, for example, "WinkyTornado Harmonic" supposed to be? It's also riddled with bugs (not the magic ones)- randomly deleting photos you take to complete a sidequest, respawning items that are supposed to be one-time only, and a few crash-to-desktops.
This is a game that would benefit immensely from a sequel or remake to bring it up to modern standards while providing more of the story and characters that make it worthwhile.
