Welcome to Anachronox, an abandoned alien artificial planet at the centre of the universe, now home to lowlifes, thieves, and scoundrels. Here we join Sylvester "Sly Boots" Bucelli--a down on his luck PI--and a cast of 6 other unlikely heroes on their quest to discover who or what is trying to destroy the universe. They are the only ones that believe it is happening, and the only ones that can do something about it.
This title is a very unique game in many ways. The combination of jRPG style turn-based combat, extraordinary characters with their own personalities, an epic and brilliantly told story, colorful graphics, and absolutely hilarious humor is something very rare. You will travel through galaxies, explore bizarre planets, and journey through space and time. There are no easy choices in this game, no obvious, predictable events, no black and white characters. This complexity made the game well reviewed--it has showed up on PC Gamer's Top 100 PC Games list three times!--and will keep you fascinated and amazed for many hours.
Great mix of Japanese and Western style RPG elements with great humor, a gripping story, and a very unique cast of characters.
Excellent storytelling via professional-quality cutscenes and dialogue will accompany you through the entire 50+ hour long adventure.
Huge world to explore with many secrets to discover and mysteries to solve. One playthrough is, by far, not enough to see it all.
I like the game. It is what you'd expect from an rpg made almost 19 years ago. It's not at all just about the combat although the story unfolds somwhat very slow. The lock picking tho - it's driving me nuts.
Anachronox is Good, it's Old, and it's also a Game.
What else is there to be said? It's a comedy that makes me laugh. It's challenging. It's darn good fun. And my Christmas wish every year since it released has been to give me sequel.
Anachronox is, hands down, my most favorite RPG of all time. I've never played an RPG that made me laugh more than once or twice, Anachronox had me on the floor at points. The world(s), the characters, the surprise party member you never saw coming, it's amazing. Seriously, buy this game, you will not be disappointed!
Anarchronox presents the 90's school of videogame plot writing, in which the story was scraped together from a pool of mixed ideas created by a dozen of enthusiastic coders without any actual knowledge on writing. The heart and the drive is there, but the end result is too uncohesive to make any real sense. The dramatic moments are wasted due to the "humour" or the inappropriate character reactions that follow them.
Gameplay (and especially combat) is boring due to its lack of meaningful choices; there isn't really all that much that the player CAN do in this one. With no character development, you just walk around clicking people and reading one poorly-written piece of dialogue after another, disrupted by the occasional battle. Too much time is spent running around from point A to point B and back, and the distances you need to cover are just ridiculous.
Anarchronox is not a bad game per se; it's just woefully uninteresting to the point where you start to question whether there is any "game" to found at all. The story is way too weak, childish and uncohesive to save whatever remains.
This and the Xenosaga trilogy are my two favorite games. There is nothing in this world like Anachronox! Between the amazing environments, the truly lovable yet realistic characters, and the hilarious yet spectacular dialog this game is above any other RPG I've played. Definitely give it a try, you won't regret it!!!
