AMID EVIL

It's good. It's not quake level good, even though it feels heavily inspired by it. The sound design is not as inspired, The art direction is cool and colourful, yet nothing out of the ordinary. The geometry of the levels is easily understood and it's pleasant, but it is also somehow more predictable than quake. It's still a VERY GOOD game. It's just a smidge short of a great one.

Des graphismes originaux, un level design soigné bourré d'idées que vous ne trouverez dans aucun autre FPS, récent ou ancien, une ambiance fabuleuse et une musique parfaitement dans l'ambiance du jeu. Amid Evil est clairement un FPS qui vous surprendra. Il faudra s'accrocher les 2 premières heures pour comprendre son fonctionnement, après vous vous délecterez de la qualité de ce jeu. Clairement une vraie surprise ce jeu. Je le referai à coup sûr, c'est une vraie pépite ! S'il y a une suite, ça sera day one pour moi ! I'll try to translate what i said in french, but sorry, english is not my mother language ... This game is one of the greatest FPS i ever made. His level design is perfect, and full of new fresh ideas you'll never see in any other FPS, new or old ones. His ambiance, his musics, his levels so different, his weapons classic but also originals, everything in this game is great. If you love FPS and old FPS, you really MUST do this one. It's worth the price ! If there's a second Amid Evil, i'll buy it DAY ONE !

I enjoyed my time with Amid Evil for most of it and I think it deserves praise for what it isn't: an over-the-top "send you to hell" metal smashing X-TREME boomer shooter. We have enough of those, thanks. Also, thanks for not making a roguelike. It's a beautiful game, the weapons are inventive and fun, the atmosphere and music are wonderful. It just feels kinda...like a beta? Your "adventure" feels pointless. The small bits of text scattered throughout the game are so minimal they don't feel like a meaningful addition to the world. It's technically better than nothing, but barely. ...the Forge, man. Why? The opening level of the Forge is really atmospheric and beautiful, and then the platforming starts. And then Crucible of Pain. And the ******* traps. And the enemies designed to screw you over in those traps. And...look, I get that there's a fine line between difficulty and power fantasy. It's fine for things to be hard, but that whole area just feels mean-spirited and unfair. It's great when things are *hard* but it feels like it's *your fault* that you died. Other than that, it doesn't feel like difficulty selection matters much. The gulf between Easy, Normal and Hard feels minimal to nonexistant. So, I had a bunch of negative things to say and some positive, but overall? Yeah, it's worth it for a shooter that feels different and is (mostly) fun in short bursts. It's not deep, but I appreciate what they went for here and even if I wanted more than maybe the devs themselves wanted to deliver, it's still a journey worth taking.

When I fired this up, I was a bit worried by the graphic style, as it was hoping for more of an 'Unreal' feel than an old Doom engine feel, and this game was clearly made to look like Heretic/Hexen. Well... the game put those worries to rest in a heartbeat. This game controls like Unreal. If you know that engine and live and breath it like I do, Amid Evil feels amazing. Anytime I die, I know it was my fault, not the game being cheap. If I get lost, it's not bad level design, it's because I missed an obvious clue. The action is great. The game is terrific. The music is on point. The only point of criticism I'll need to leave is that the font choice for the HUD is awful, and scales badly. It's very difficult to read the in game fonts no matter the setting. If you make it small enough that it's easier to read, by then it's all over on the side of the screen too far away to quickly reference. It'd be nicer if we could position the HUD in the middle of the screen, and change the font to something more legible. Small complaints aside, this game is one you'll want to have in your collection. You can't beat it for the price.

Actually, i'm not a fan of FPS-Games they are trying to have the pixel-style of the 90s. "Amid Evil" have the design of Heretic and Hexen and the gameplay of Serious Sam, which is great fun. I'm in Episode 2 Level 1 right now and it's fantastic designed. It feels like 3dfx-games. It's awesome.
