great thirller but watch out for bugs

the list of game breaking bugs is too long to list here. a google search will do it. just be ready to restart / replay if one of the occurs - me, I stopped playing - will wait more time before trying it again. shame that they didn't work on fixing the bugs

It's good but not great

First off I want to go over some of the things I really loved in this game 1. The setting: having the opportunity to play an amnesia like horror game where the monster is the Alien and your Ripley IN A SPACE STATION is so damn cool. I love looking outside the windows in this game and just taking in the vastness of the setting sometimes -- this was definitely an idea that was cool on paper. 2. The Alien is consistently scary (especially in that death animation) despite it's flaws which I will get into. However, this brings me to the downsides which is the execution for such an idea: 1. The Alien AI borderlines on psychic at times to downright moronic at other times: for example in terms of it acting stupid there were periods in this game where the alien dropped from a vent right in front of me -- face me -- not notice me at all and jump straight back into the vent above, so okay... that was one time, right? NO, there were also several periods where it would duck down when I was hiding under a desk and it would again look straight at me and not do anything. Now to address the times when the AI was practically psychic: I would sneak into another room (alien was in a completely different room and didn't notice me), I begin to hear it approach the room I was in from outside and before it opens the door I hide in small closet under a desk and the alien would just casually walk inside, reach across from the other side of the table, open the door from the closet, pull me out and kill me. How did it know so casually and why didn't it rush in? In conclusion I'm guessing this behavior is supposed to make the Alien more unpredictable, but it just confused me because I didn't know when it was going to be an idiot or a psychic. When it was an idiot I would just laugh at it and when it was a psychic I would get frustrated. 2. While the setting is really cool, the levels are designed poorly with paths not marked correctly leading you to get lost and level design was repeated

Glorified Hide & Seek

I suppose if you want to immerse yourself in the Alien film aesthetic and atmosphere then Alien Isolation delivers. Other than that, it's the usual running around in circles and hiding in closets and under desks to the point where any fear or tension is dissolved with the sheer boredom of repetitive hiding. The game is 10 years old so I should give it some slack and it's also at a great price but it just reminds me too much of Outcast which similarly has you running around in circles for hours trying to escape from the same regurtigation of bad guys over and over again.

Dull & repetitive; assets don't save it

I love the Alien IP and really wanted to like this game, but I can't. First impressions were strong, thanks to the faithfully crafted assets: Your surroundings, the equipment etc. are a perfect fit for the franchise. There's a lot of cute fan service in here, too. Unfortunately neither the level design nor the gameplay hold up. Not only are rooms constantly re-used with only minor alterations, the entire progression is painfully linear with lots of backtracking through already visited areas. It's basically a never-ending corridor leading you from button to button, from contrived problem to script trigger. The entire game feels artificially lengthened to obscene degrees. The main gameplay loop is about stealth and sometimes combat, although neither are particularly interesting. There are some tools for distracting, stunning or killing enemies, but mostly it's just a waiting game. The vaunted xenomorphs are disappointing: A few scripted sequences can't plaster over the fact that these creatures are not really hunting you nor laying traps or ambushes, but simply patrolling an area, spawning from vents when there's too much noise (like gunfire or machinery) and de-spawning again when they get bored (or torched). Their AI seems to be surprisingly basic and path-finding is poor. They usually kill you by starting an instakill animation from a rather long distance, "sucking" you in, so timing is important for sending them away. Also, they aren't scary so much as annoying - especially when they cause you to lose progress since the last save-point, adding to the game's runtime and my annoyance. The same deal with unavoidable animations also happens with the android enemies (and the constantly repeated door-opening or tool-using animations). All of this gets old quick. The story is basic but serviceable. Honestly, I had far more fun with the rightfully panned Aliens: Colonial Marines. But if you want my actual recommendation, I'd say go play Aliens vs. Predator 2.
