One of the best old RPGs

This is a brilliant game which I have played many times in my life. I was first introduced to it by my father when I was about 10 years old (the game was a few years old back then). I was too young to finish it, but I still marvelled at the wondrous alien world into which I was fully transported. I came back to it several times throughout my life, and I was never disappointed. The graphics are simple, yet perfect and mesmerising. The combat is quite tough and tactical, so you will have to reload and replay some parts. The dungeons are vast, yet they do not get old. The levelling system and equipment aquisition is perfectly balanced. Believe it or not, I have not yet mentioned the game's greatest strength, which is story and immersion. All of the characters feel real and believable, the world seems as complex as ours, and there are many forks in the road where you will have to make significant choices that affect the story and character development. I hope you give this gem a chance, I hope you forgive the aging graphics, and I hope you fall in love with the alien world and the colorful characters that reside within it. I'm buying this game and playing it again after about 8 years, this time in my 30's =) My only warning: Do NOT have just one save file, since there are irreversible choices, and you may regret doing what you did.

A finest example of what RPG..

..... should look like. I've discovered this forgotten masterpiece just some month ago and didn't know it, and I'm still shocked how I didn't heard about it until now. Albion is a forgotten ( at least it appears to be) ''hermetic'' masterpiece of a CRPG: from its pixel backgrounds to its story, art and music, everything has the mark of being a timeless classic, which is a title that too many players have the bad behaviour to assign to any game that passes as decent. No, when I say ''it's a masterpiece'' you better believe: as a (c)RPG, it reaches highs for its time ( and beyond) I have ever seen. Gameplay wise, it's an amalgamation of multiple system mechanics such as top down strategy game, first person view while exploring dungeon and an open world system that, again for its time, was very ambitious. Story is beautiful and a little deeper of '' bad guy, let's go kill it'' but I won't spoil it too much here. Speaking instead of graphic and soundtrack, they didn't age, they are still pristine and, simply put, magnificent. Now, I did say '' hermetic'' and I wanted to clarify: if you are looking for a super easy game to get into, skip it ( although It would be really a shame) since this game require you paying attention to detail, plus some system mechanics are a little too ''archaic''. Still, as someone without any previous affection for this game ( Although I must admit, I love the genre and the time of these kind of games) , this game is one of the greatest experience offered in this site.. you just need to take your time and take in ( nailed it) the beautiful alien world of Albion. Because, after all, this is truly what this game is about: acceptance of other cultures and protecting nature ( a little bit star trek, but Albion does it in its own way).

The gest RPG ever made

I've played it for the first time when I was just a child and I've just finished it again as a grown man. This game is still absolutely amazing and incredibly underrated! The world is huge and original. The story makes sense and is very interesting. The lore is great and worth exploring. Combat is rewarding on top of a fantastic loot system and magic spells. The music is to this day just fantastic and creates a great atmosphere. It's also not an easy game and it takes a bit of time to get used to it! Perhaps that is why it was never successful - it never leads you by hand and you have to figure out a lot of stuff on your own, plus there is a lot of hidden secrets and items. 10/10 incredible experience. I would pay any money for a sequel!!!

Save the planet - Now!

Finally it's here on gog, with the CD-version I needed 4 hours to get it running in DOS, I wished I could have bought it here before that long troublesome DOS-box operation, but hey it's so good, I think I will just buy it here again :) So about the game: Albion is very immersive and entertaining but it's also incredibly unforgiving (at least in my opinion, maybe I did something wrong at some point in the game). The traps + the enemies in the dungeons form a murderous duo and if you go there without the right equipment and without enough patience it will get really nasty. In this regard it resembles the The Dark Eye - Realms of Arkania series, only a bit easier and with better graphics. Okay, I'm not the best gamer under the sun and the setting is so fascinating just like the perspective switching from first person to isometric depending on the context, that I can just give this game a 5 star rating which it really deserves for being unique: The game does a lot of things right, not only story-telling wise but also with the interactive environment. You can interact with a lot of things in the landscape and the houses - a bit like in games like Oblivion - and you also get a discription for nearly everything around you(which meant a lot to me). And the group members you can have during the game are very well thought-out and diverse just like the dialogue options and the skills/spells. One can clearly see that the developers put a lot of effort into this game. If the popular movie 'Avatar' had a spiritual gaming predecessor, this would be it. The story about the exploitation of the planet/the nature and the cat-like natives being threatened by the greed of the 'intruders' reminded me a lot of it. All in all I can recommend this game to everyone, of course especially to role-playing fantasy/science-fiction fans.

My fav game of all times

I played through this game 3 times. It's wonderful. A true hidden gem. Compare it to Firefly, years later there still is a small but very strong group of fans. Albion is an RPG in a unique universe and with very good story writing. A refreshing difference to the usual elves and dwarves. It has fewer degrees of freedom than some other RPGs. I found that to be a good thing, because the degrees of freedom can be overwhelming in other games at times. Albion delivers the things it does wrapped up in a very intuitive and well designed user interface. You still have the usual equipping characters, leveling up skills, item buffs, temporary buffs, etc. Some of the story is non-linear. The only problem is that it leaves you wishing for more and there never was a sequal. It was however developed by the same team that developed Amber Star and Amber Moon for Atari, which may be worth playing and use some of the same engine.
