Description
'Tis said that long ago peace and tranquility covered the lands. Food and drink flowed freely, man and beast lived in peace, gold and silver abounded – it was the Golden Age of Akalabeth.

Mondain, second born of Wolfgang, a great king of old, wished to gain his brother's inheritance and so he used his great powers for evil, creating deep dungeons guarded by daemons and Balrogs. Now blood flowed freely in Akalabeth, and foul creatures soon came to roam near the surface. Mondain cast such sickness and pestilence upon Akalabeth, that both man and beast lived in constant fear. Thus was the Dark Age of Akalabeth.

There arose from the land a man, pure and just, to battle the Dark Lord. British, Champion of the White Light, did battle with Mondain deep within the labyrinth of dungeons, eventually driving him from Akalabeth forever. British of the White Light was proclaimed Lord British, Protector of Akalabeth. Alas, much damage had been suffered unto the lands. The Revival of Akalabest has begun.

'Tis thy duty to rid Akalabeth of the foul creatures which infest it, whilst trying to stay alive!

  • Developed in 1979, Akalabeth is the first game made by the legendary creator of the Ultima Series, Richard Garriot.
  • Designed by the teenage Garriot in Applesoft BASIC for the Apple II, Akalabeth is one of the earliest known examples of a computer role-playing game, and is considered by many to be "Ultima 0."
  • Featuring 10 different monsters, procedurally generated dungeon crawling, and wire frame 3D graphics, Akalabeth was highly advanced for its time and is still widely regarded as one of the most historically significant RPGs ever created.

This game is really oldest.

So, i playing this game, and it's be awsome. I never playing Ultima series before, but i am interesting for this. Akalabeth is really brutal and darkness game, if you have, a good imagination. You create your avatar: in first you write a your luckly number - basically, it's change random contents in this game, like a dangeon or towns. Second step: you change level (1-10) - it's difficult. Next, you choose fighter or Magi. Fighter can take all weapon in this game. Magi - can only use magic amulet, but i't nevermind, maybe i cannot see the change. So, first you traveling in dangeon, becouse you need gold and resources. If you want to play normal, you must always buying a food, or you dead. So, it's historycal game. I really like it. Richard Garret i thanks for your first creation! This really fun! In this game a find more jokes and funny moments like a Balroge or Bed? I remember whan, i see as Gramlins has a stolen my food, it's gonna be fun. I recommended, trying this! Thanks GOG.com! Akalabeth: World of Doom - рекомендую к приобретению в свою библиотеку на GOG.com.

Play it for nostalgia, but not much else

This game has aged horribly. I get that it is a product of its time, but playing it I just felt like I was wasting time more than having fun.

It's like a personal project of student.

Well, this is a game that has more historical value than artistic value. And even then it doesn't have big-scale historical value because "let's try to port DnD experience RPG into computer game" idea is not a terribly unique one. Mostly it shows what 17-year creator of Ultima was up to. Otherwise, it's eh. Too limited yet too hard, not a good combination for skinner box of stone age RPGs. Not much to buy, you will get stuff stolen all time, that food that you will keep running out of. Weird rules too. And, of course, no story or roleplaying. Get quest, beat monster up, report to Lord British, repeat. Die, reroll. Besides, it really isn't balanced well at all. Oh, and it's not original Apple ][ release. I think that it's a fan-made port to DOS from earlier 90s. The glitched up one. It also includes official port from later 90s as a bonus, less glitchy one but with more features like music, which may have been taken from another Ultima. The kind that are too advanced for such game, ehe. It has the best old-school cover art ever, however. Just look at this beauty. Real man with handsome moustache wracking the skeleton's dumbass head into bits and pieces. Simple and so snappy!

Dungeons of Daggorath 1982 copy?

This is the same game as "Dungeons of Daggorath" ! I played the original Dungeons of Daggorath when it came out back in the 1980's on my Tandy CoCo 2.. It was a really good game and im glad to see it again! And back then it was the most addictive game i could find :) --description found online of Dungeons of Daggorath --- Dungeons of Daggorath is one of the first real-time, first-person perspective role-playing video games. It was produced by DynaMicro for the TRS-80 Color Computer in 1982. This game is a significant plot point in the novel Ready Player One, but does not appear in its film adaptation. Wikipedia Initial release date: 1982 Publisher: Tandy Corporation Developer: DynaMicro Genre: Dungeon crawl Mode: Single-player video game Platforms: TRS-80 Color Computer, Dragon 32/64

Its tough to put this on a modern scale.

I loved the history lesson, hated starving at the beginning, enjoyed delving into the extremely few/extremely many RPG choices offered, thrown off by the inaccurate manual, confused by the Lord Brittish overworld objective, laughed at the gremlins (the most deadly monster by far), and relished in pride and joy at the ending. Overall, several hours of my life were well spent.
