This is probably high level nitpicking, so take it with a grain of salt. The game itself seems to be quite nice from what I have seen so far.
But honestly, the magic system is frustrating for me. I'm always trying to RPG play an ice/water mage in the Age of Wonder series, combined with Vikings/Elves adapted to arctic environment. Think of Frozen, Queen Elsa, Marshmallow etc.
Somehow, if I want to play an ice mage, I'm lumped with shadow magic and raising undead. That's... not the RPG theme I want to play as at all.
I'm a bit thorn between giving the game a 3 or a 4. It seems nice & the magic system is something different than the usual "elemental" magics. But I'll probably have to play a completely different faction than I intended.
As the title says, this is the best game of the year so far in my opinion.
I'm having the "play game, look up in horror to realize how late it is" effect for the first time in a long time playing this.
The only two complaints I have are that I wish the combat animations were more realistic and cleaner and that the campaign was more in depth.
This is one of the few games I've ever pre-ordered that I did not regret it.
I've just played for a few hours and it looks really nice and interesting. A bit familiar, to the previous parts, and quite some of the new mechanics.
Looking forward to diving deeper and hope that the game will continue to be great.
Really dissapointed with AOW4. Unfortunately too many gamers are fanbois of a franchise and will always give a max rating on a new release no matter what. Kind of like fans of Apple, or Ford, or Chevy etc.
I'm going to be honest in my opinion and rating. I'm a fan of the series. As well as 4x games in general. AOW4 is too convoluted for it's own good. The "fun" factor is greatly reduced, in favor of more options and systems that are pointless. The graphics don't seem any better, but rather just a move sideways. A change in style is all. I think the graphics in AOW3 are better to be honest.
I give this 3 stars out of five. I'm sorry I wasted my money on it. Too many other better games out there.
This is a great game, and I say this with one caveat. This game begs to have a mouse interface that will allow you to quickly move around the gaming environment and select various options. Using the standard double fisted, gaming controller is extremely cumbersome and slows things down. The PS five, which I purchased it for, supports both mouse and keyboard, but the game does not. I’ve tried various work around with no success. I’ve given the game five stars because it truly is an outstanding evolution for this type of game. Just wish it supported other IO devices.
