As someone new to modern 4X games (used to play Command & Conquer and Heroes of Might and Magic way back in the day), I was initially unsure about purchasing this title. However, after spending around eight hours learning the ropes and finally achieving my first win, I found the experience to be both challenging and highly enjoyable. The game is fun, engaging, and I’m excited to discover even more as I continue playing. I needed to look up some YT tutorials at first, as the game is complex and requires thought, strategy and planning. GIve it a try!
Overall I'm finding AoW4 to be pretty enjoyable. A bit repetative at times, and it seems like a lot of stuff is locked behind DLC, but still pretty fun.
Age of Wonders 4 is easily the best game made by this company in a decade. It fixes the problems of both AoW3 and Planetfall; AoW3 had non-linear city expansion which was impossible to direct, and incredibly tedious combat. Planetfall was a bloated mess of useless and redundant techs, with a non-intuitive expansion system. AoW4 on the other hand, has linear, directable expansion for cities, combat is significantly smoother, and the discoverable techs are never made obsolete by future research
I've sunk 200+ hours in this game now, and I still can't get over the customization available in this grand strategy game. Make your own ruler and civilization, with the kind of progression you'd only find in DnD.
Almost every kind of strategy works, which also means your opponents can be anything you can imagine. This often times means they may have a level of toughness and ideal strategy you'll have to work around with your own adaptation. Luckily, with the ability to create tons of modifying gear and being able to go down what ever path you want with the Tomes, the sky is literally the limit.
I haven't finished the game yet but so far so good. My wife did and she had a good time but has stayed away lately due to just "one more turn". I'll update when I finish, but it looks like I'm in the end game since my two opponents are trying to gang up on me to stop or slow me down from winning.
