Follow the grim tale of young Amicia and her little brother Hugo, in a heartrending journey through the darkest hours of history. Hunted by Inquisition soldiers and surrounded by unstoppable swarms of rats, Amicia and Hugo will come to know and trust each other. As they struggle to survive against overwhelming odds, they will fight to find purpose in this brutal, unforgiving world.
1349. The plague ravages the Kingdom of France. Amicia and her younger brother Hugo are pursued by the Inquisition through villages devastated by the disease. On their way, they will have to join forces with other children, and evade swarms of rats using fire and light. Aided only by the link that binds their fates together, they will face untold horrors in their struggle to survive.
As their adventure begins… the time of innocence ends.
If you don't expect complex game mechanics, and you only want to experience a one time film-like adventure - you will not be disappointed. Devs deserve a big round of applause.
played on Xbox GP. it's a stealth horror game that took me around 14 hours to finish with finding about half of the collectables. heard so many good things but still surprised me. looking at the credits i couldn't beleive this was made by only a medium sized studio, it is so polished. this studio is some seriously talented people both artistically and technically. i finished it realising this game must have had a tonne of love and passion poured into it by everyone involved.
each environment is meticulously crafted (leaves far bigger studio games to shame), realising this world slowly falling to ruin beneath the inquisition and a terrible disease. the voice actors are perfect, but the stand out is the music. i can't remember the last time i played a game where the scoring and pace is so perfect. and i play a lot of big name rpgs, japanese and western alike. i keep wondering if it is the best i've heard. it's terrifying, sombre, tense, painful and hopeful, yet always strikingly beautiful, and makes each moment hit so much harder. there are also well thought out audio and visual cues to help you while traversing the levels and avoiding detection.
combat is tactical as your weapon is slow and is designed to build tension. there is more emphasis to do things by stealth. combat opens even more late game but...spoilers. there is a crafting system as well, and while i'm not a fan of crafting in a game like this, it's organic enough considering the storyline, and the requirement for using different ammo types. the ammo types is fun and i enjoyed figuring out how to use them to get though each encounter. what i found good is that there was not quite enough supplies to build all the upgrades to equipment, so you have to be mindful of how you want to play. that said i had to drop a star as there are a few moments in the game where the pacing outstrips the combat flow and things get grindy, but thankfully they are brief.
best storied game i have played in ages
Game looks like an a game from indie-developer. With small bugs, a little confused gameplay tricks.
But it gives us interesting evolution of a story, like a tales from my childhood. Many violence and cruelty.. So it is middle ages.
Completed in a few evenings. Recommended.
A Plague Tale Innocence is an unbelievably engaging story about a supernatural twist of the Black Death plague that swept across Europe during the 14th century. The game gives its own fictional take on how the bubonic plague devastated France. I won't spoil anything, so I'll just say some very creative and interesting liberties are taken by the developers in order to deliver a very original story about a little boy and his older sister.
The visuals are nothing short of breathtaking. These graphics have aged very well and will put modern hardware to work. The developers, however, are based in France. As such, voice-over animations are synced to the French language (i think) and may be only mildly jarring to players listening to English voices like me. The quality of those English voice-overs, however, are incredible. I'm glad they got good voice talent to record this story in English!
Now while the gameplay mostly consists of easy puzzles and acceptable stealth gameplay, A Plague Tale Innocence certainly doesn't excel in this department. It definitely won't bore you to tears, but sneaking by and distracting enemies isn't fast paced and super imaginative with magic like in a Dishonored game. Nor will you use a bunch of different contraptions to sneak by enemies like in Alien Isolation. However, if anything, the stealth and puzzles in Plague Tale serve as fun distractions between cutscenes and amazing snippets of its story.
All in all, A Plague Tale Innocence is an easy recommendation for anybody looking for an incredible story and amazing graphics. And if anything, Innocence is still a fun stepping-stone towards playing its sequel, Requiem (which is a damn masterpiece in my opinion).
