A game at odds with itself
I have to say that the game certainly impresses in terms of visuals and overall quality - and outshines various AAA games (I would have said that even before the dire sequence of AAA releases lately). The story and world is incredibly linear, but it tells a nice story, with a variety of likeable characters (and hateable villains). However, about 2/3 of the way through the game, the gameplay shifts in a way that is as abrupt as it is unwanted for me. The previous stealth-based game is replaced by a sequence of rushed combat scenarios which you have not been prepared for. You will die a lot due to a lack of a skill you have not only had no chance to develop beforehand, but have been actively avoiding (and rewarded for doing so). It's not the first stealth game that I've encountered this with. Aragami has a similar lack of faith in its own convictions when it came to a mid-game boss that ruined the game for me. An incredible technical achievement, a likeable cast of characters (and good actors behind them), and some stunning (if not always beautiful - given the story) visuals, marred by an inconsistent mode of play.
