Description
A Legionary's Life lets you play as a Roman soldier during the years of the Second Punic War and beyond. Rise up through the ranks and win prestigious awards or just focus on making it home in one piece; it's up to you.

This is a unique single-player game with RPG elements, extensive usage of attribute and skill checks, a turn-based combat system involving many variables and a touch of roguelike features.

In this game you will not be the hero who wins battles alone; you will be more like a gear in a much larger machine.

Features:

  • Live through (or die in) carefully reconstructed battles of the The Hannibalic War and the ensuing Second Macedonian War from the point of view of a pre-Marian Roman legionary.
  • Start as a poorly skilled conscript soldier in the middle of the Second Punic War. See how long you can remain alive and eventually become a respected veteran.
  • Permadeath: when your legionary dies, it's game over. However, the points earned by your most successful characters can be spent to enhance your future ones.
  • Dozens of random events affecting your life as a legionary.
  • Replay value. You will only see a fraction of the game in each run.
  • Turn-based combat system involving fatigue, morale, reach, confined space, high ground and more. Always keep your Stance high or you'll become a lot less effective and open to attacks. Adjust your Attitude to increase your odds of survival.
  • Frequent skill/attribute checks based on your values and the difficulty of the task at hand. For example, a good relevant attribute might give you a high chance to succeed at a specific task. If the chance is, say, 80%, it means you can still fail sometimes. Exceptionally high stats may even guarantee success, but they are difficult to attain.
  • Win rewards based on the real decorations used in the Roman army at the time, including Civic Crowns, Mural Crowns and Armillae.
  • Rise through the ranks in your maniple and become a Centurion. Or don't, and just try to survive until the end of the war.
  • Equip yourself with swords, helmets and armors from the mid-Republic era.

I really want to give a higher score...

It's the kind of game that feels like there is something underneath, the kind of game that has that IT factor that keeps you coming back. There is some very neat RPG-Lite mechanics, and a lot of great lore that slowly reveals itself. The art style is well chosen, and the audio compliments it beautifully...but...as you'll find others state, your experience with the RNG is going to make or break your opinion of this game. For the most part in the non-combat sections it leans on the mildly annoying side, the steps back greater than the steps forward, but in the combat, it can take an entertaining game you want to play more of and morph it into a a depressing spiral of failed and missed choices. I've tried to keep going back and playing this, keep reading other peoples strategies and the game mechanics, but the RNG has destroyed me. I have failed things repeatedly that I should not have, I have gotten in good positions in fights, only to have the enemy suddenly have 3 shots in a row and put me into a fail spiral. For me, it didn't matter how I rolled a character, how I played that character, the game would fall apart for me relatively early on where I just watch a stream of failed / missed from my character. The only small victory came , after about 15 failed games I had enough points to start a new game to get me a bit further, before RNG stuck me in an epically long 50 odd round of combat filled failed desperate attempts to survive, wiping out my desire to play anymore. The game is cheap enough it's worth sticking in your account because you'll probably get enough value out of it, and the game feels like the developer really put effort and love into it, but beware the RNG. You might be another person online who succeeded spectacularly in your first play through, or you might end up like one of us who despite their best and varied efforts, are yet to really get off the starting blocks. Final thoughts; Game has an 80% chance of succeeding... so naturally a miss.

Good game, but the RNG

What the game is really good about it`s that feeling of being a simple legionary and not that important hero, ready to save the world. It is also very well prepared when it comes to historical accuracy. I would easily compare this production to FTL, a nice leisure after work; but if you are a person that doesn`t like to loose don`t buy it! If you think that WOT or XCom RNG are annoying, this game will change your mind :) After maiking you fail a couple of 60 - 90% tests in a row, it will also punish heavily, even when you do everything right. Recommended when on sale and for people who don`t loose their nerves that easy, but I really like it.

This great game needs a Senator sequel

If you enjoy studying the old romam empire and want a life simulator, this game is for you. Full of situations and have a tiny bit of RPG elements. Just bear in mind that it has a lot of text. Just please, MAKE A SEQUEL where we can be a senator or a proconsul, this great game demands it! A master piece, love it!

Great game

Please make a sequel. If you'd love love roleplaying as a legionnare micromanaging your equipment, your combat prowess and various other stats, while also having to make important decisions in battles which will result in different outcomes and endings... Then this is your game. Such an underrated/unknown gem

Awesome roman legionary RPG roguelite

Nostalgic for my early days of PC gaming and text based RPGs, along with a love of Roman history, I jumped on this. It was hard to get the hang of the traing and combat system, but once I did, even my bad runs were a blast. It took me about 20 runs (not kidding) in order to get to the end of the game... but I enjoyed every second of it. Many different options to choose that take your character down many paths.
