Description
A Legionary's Life lets you play as a Roman soldier during the years of the Second Punic War and beyond. Rise up through the ranks and win prestigious awards or just focus on making it home in one piece; it's up to you.

This is a unique single-player game with RPG elements, extensive usage of attribute and skill checks, a turn-based combat system involving many variables and a touch of roguelike features.

In this game you will not be the hero who wins battles alone; you will be more like a gear in a much larger machine.
 

Features:

  • Live through (or die in) carefully reconstructed battles of the The Hannibalic War and the ensuing Second Macedonian War from the point of view of a pre-Marian Roman legionary.
  • Start as a poorly skilled conscript soldier in the middle of the Second Punic War. See how long you can remain alive and eventually become a respected veteran.
  • Permadeath: when your legionary dies, it's game over. However, the points earned by your most successful characters can be spent to enhance your future ones.
  • Dozens of random events affecting your life as a legionary.
  • Replay value. You will only see a fraction of the game in each run.
  • Turn-based combat system involving fatigue, morale, reach, confined space, high ground and more. Always keep your Stance high or you'll become a lot less effective and open to attacks. Adjust your Attitude to increase your odds of survival.
  • Frequent skill/attribute checks based on your values and the difficulty of the task at hand. For example, a good relevant attribute might give you a high chance to succeed at a specific task. If the chance is, say, 80%, it means you can still fail sometimes. Exceptionally high stats may even guarantee success, but they are difficult to attain.
  • Win rewards based on the real decorations used in the Roman army at the time, including Civic Crowns, Mural Crowns and Armillae.
  • Rise through the ranks in your maniple and become a Centurion. Or don't, and just try to survive until the end of the war.
  • Equip yourself with swords, helmets and armors from the mid-Republic era.

A Legionary's Life

It is designed to be tried and failed in the same vein as a rouguelike. After failing, the next character gets points to increase stats or buy improved starting gear after rolling your stats on the new character. If you play enough, you will eventually have a good run and all future runs at that point will likely have similar success as the "lucky" run you just had. At the very least, you won't die as quickly in future runs as you did in earlier runs. If you are unsure of how this game plays, try the free game "Heads Will Roll: Downfall". It's free and has similar gameplay. If you enjoy that one, you will probably like this one. The major downside is the RNG with missing. Nothing feels as infuriating as seeing an 85-90 percent chance to hit and missing four or more times in a row. It will happen to you at some point. Also, the weapon skills are odd. You have a skill for polearms and another for axes/maces. I survived through the Macedonian campaign and never found any of these weapons. Maybe I'm just unlucky or just not smart enough. Turns out my character wasn't smart enough to become a senator after the last campaign.

Great game

Once you understand the combat and embrace the no-save and permadeath feature it really enhances the game's playability through the romance of dying, it might hurt in the moment to lose all the efforts of your legionaire's life, but that's what you get for challenging a warrior beyond (or at, or multiple below) your league. It's enjoyable to play through each time and try and do better until you're basically Achillies on your play throughs. I recommend naming your character with a number for each life (e.g., "John 1... John 2... John 3" etc.) that way you can see how you progress in the Hall of Fame. I'm on "Justin 38" as of the time of this review and have pretty much played out the game and achieved most all achievements. It's an enjoyable game and the basic mechanics are good, and there is alot of potential if they make another or even polish this one more. The resource gathering side quest gets a bit repetitive. Regardless, thank you to the guy whom made this as it does a great job of making you feel like a soldier in Rome's army trying to survive.

For the price is a nice game, if you don't like RNG or reading I don't recommend at all, repetitive too so keep in mind
