Not worth the price

While I was enthused to see this classic game that I had the fleeting pleasure of enjoying from a PC Gamer demo disc when it was originally released. I booted it up, the settings consist of two audio settings, without any graphics options (namely resolution), mouse speed, controls, etc. Playing the game is not aided by the lack of an intuitive UI, brick-dumb AI for your soldiers and the card mechanic that doesn't have a brief explanation for what the respective cards do. There is nothing setting this game apart, beyond this clunky mechanic and with so few options, it's hard to suggest picking it up. If this title intrigues you, wait for a sale, as I thoroughly feel disappointed having spent $5.99 on it (not GOG's fault obviously).

Not the best then

Certainly not the best now, but I did enjoy this game back in the day. I'm into this more for the nostalgia than anything.

Much better than you may think

Now this game is quite a tricky jewel. It was far from excellent back in the day, and by today it obviously did not get any better. Still it is a lot of fun and worth playing even now for a number of reasons. Let's start with things that most people will complain about. First of all, the interface is clunky. Better get ready for mouse clicks never getting registered. This has a number consequences, including units not being selected, orders not being issued, units not moving where you want them to, etc. Hope you can live with that, because there are more hurdles to overcome. One of them is AI of friendly units. It is very stoic to say the least - your folks really do not like to move to engage the enemy or react to nearby allies getting pummeled on their own. Most of these problems do not affect the enemy AI though, as CPU handles each unit separately and controls it the whole time. So what we can see so far is a fast RTS with lacklustre interface and high difficulty. To be honest, for me in most cases this is a perfect recipe for a total disaster. So how come 7th Legion gets a such a positive rating? First of all is the setting. I love Warhammer 40k and while this game is not licensed, it borrows a host of concepts from that extremely popular franchise. However, I just have to say that it is much more than a simple knockoff - it adds a lot of its own personality. Great stuff. Next are some technicals. Units design is fantastic. The game also looks and sounds very good even today, it aged very well for my taste in this respect. I just love the feeling of all these different kinds of tanks and mechs battling each other, it is just a real joy to watch. And last but not least - the challenge. I normally do not seek it in video games, but here for some reason it really fits the game, and gives a lot of satisfaction after winning a tough battle with very strong enemy. Highly recommended for all RTS fans!

Mouse issues ruin the game

The Game has issues with the mouse that make it a ruined experience. The game's speed also seems to have an effect on the mouse issue, I'm not sure if it's tied to a framerate issue or what the problem is. Nobody on the GOG forums seemed to have an answer to the problem either. As far as I'm concerned this is another example of retro shovelware. The game has interesting concepts but there's no tutorial to help you understand the game's combat aspects so you're stuck having to assume what to do or read a manual online.

good at times

When it is good it can be a lot of fun, but tedious at others. The cards add a great twist. I was super hyped for this one as a kid but ultimately it did not live up.
