Buggy POS

Yeah, don't believe the fanboys who give everything 5 stars. There isn't really anything worthwhile about this game. First it's short. So short I finished it in one sitting. It would have taken less time if it wasn't so buggy. It's a bad sign when the readme file tells you "When this bug happens do this with the cursor to get control of your units back." And that's one that came WITH the game. This RTS has no resources. None. You get credits just for being alive. The manual has more pages about the battle cards then anything else. Want all your units to die instantly because "Other guy played a card" well woo! That's not an RTS. Now from the credits screen it looks like one guy programmed the whole thing, so kudos to him. There are 3 pages of QA people. They did a crappy job since so many bugs remain. It's just frustration on a stick. Made worse by the fact the game runs too fast on modern DX. You'd think by the mid 90s people would know to put in time delays. You can fix some of the speed issues with the DXWRAPPER GOG is using to make the game run but the title screen still runs at 600fps. I did not play this before but I suspect the "fog of war" returning almost instantly is a side effect of the game running too fast. So exploring the map is useless and you end up hunting blind for the last unit.

Awful... Simply awful...

I don't know if there is one redeemable thing about this game. I had never played it before but was/am a huge fan of C&C and Starcraft and the overall RTS genre, so I decided to give it a try. Terrible decision. There is no tutorial to speak of (that I found) and was thrust right into the game. I made some troops, sent them out, and BLAM a giant explosion out of nowhere that killed all my troops. Started over, made some troops, BLAM something called chaos popped up above my troops and they all started to shoot each other until only 1 was left standing. There is no obvious rhyme or reason to anything in this game in the 2 days I played it before I gave up. Money gets deposited into your bank at an unknown interval. Troops have no description of what they can do (and once again, no tutorial on how to use them.) There are up to 5 "cards" in the corner that have no description or how to use them... They are extremely powerful but you have to accept that you might blow up all of your troops trying to figure them out. The absolute worst part of this game is selecting your troops and their path traveling AI. They'll get to where you want them to go however they want, devoid of logic and reason. It's not Point-A to Point-B most times... sometimes it's A to C to D through an enemy base to E to F and finally to B... And that's only if your troops decides to move in the first place. It might be enjoyable to those who have a ton of patience to figure it out, but I would personally encourage everyone looking at this game to just move along.

Average RTS with an fantastic score

Blair Zuppicich, the composer for 7th Legion and most other Vision Software titles is an unsung master of video game music. Sadly, his works always tend to end up in rather flawed games, and 7th Legion is no exception. The game's premise is great, though a bit too heavily influenced by Warhammer 40000, it also has some pretty interesting mechanics, most importantly a card game system, which it probably was the first RTS games to have, even though we've seen it more recently (and better executed) in games like Dragon Commander and Battleforge. 7th Legion sadly has issues with many of the genre's fundamental mechanics - path finding and mouse interface among the worst offenders, but all in all it's a pretty interesting title from the era when we saw the creative peak of the genre, and for the price on GOG, I think it's worth experiencing.

Not thát bad...

Straight forward sci-fi themed RTS, at first. Some game mechanics are peculiar which is something you need to find out thru trial and error and reading the manual carefully. No in-game way of telling what to do with the 'cards'; skills that are displayed with in-game buttons you can click when in battle: learning to use these is obligatory, since they make ALL the difference when the shit hits the fan. These skills are remorseless and therefor considered disproportionate. If the fight goes well the player doesn't need to worry about money or finding resources - they get rewarded. Power Ups can be found at the battlefield as crates. The graphics are sort of a mix between Age of Empires and Zeus. Music: Heavy Metal. When this game first hit the streets it not only had to compete with aforementioned C&C, but with the much better marketed Starcraft, that came out a little later, as well - these were the days of buying discs in wonderful boxes somewhere downtown as opposed to today's spiffy downloading experience ;-) 7th Legion just got crushed. Both C&C and Starcraft have the delight of wonderful game mechanics for these days. 7th Legion lacks behind in many ways in that area. Yet - I would like to propose that 7th Legion has charm and appeal, not always found in today's games. You start to love your units. The game has some interesting ideas, that, however imbalanced, can make a fun game once mastered.

Horrible RTS, but one of the best for me

I played this game around 2003 or 04, one of my first PC games. Because of that, the story for me was not generic at all, just simple. The game has two campaings, the red and blue side have unique units (altrough they share some, the basic infantry and cavalry for example), some missions are real challenges, even have some "commando missions" where you have only 3 o 4 soldiers and you have to infiltrate in enemy buildings. Yes, the pathfindign was horrible, yes, the "cash" system is weird and sometimes just unfair, yes, the lack of some mechanics are unforgetable for a game like that (come on Microprose!!). But in discount you cannot ignore this classic RTS, even with all that things the game is actually very very fun. I love the rts genre, i played a lot of strategy games and this one have a very decent campaings, not much scripting but it doesnt matter. Special mention to the VERY original card system, where you can obtain bonuses or "curse" the enemies.
