This was truly the best way to experience Gen 1 Pokemon... at least if you were a fan of the anime. If I remember right, you could even get the rest of the starters over the course of the game.
I actually had Pokémon Blue for my ancient gameboy as one of the first handheld games I owned and got caught on. I really did not like that Blue had to trade with Reds to get all the pokémons, extra so since I knew nobody else who played it.
These days, being able to get all would probably also be best with a version that covers everything!

Fable: The Lost ChaptersFable was expanded and rereleased as Fable: The Lost Chapters for Xbox and Windows PC platforms in September 2005. The game was later ported to Mac OS X by Robosoft Technologies and published by Feral Interactive on 31 March 2008.
