Around 1995, a friend gave me his copy of Dragon Lore 1 since he didn't enjoy it. As a kid, I played it together with my father. We needed all our resourcefulness, including an English dictionary, to finish the story, but it was an unforgettable experience.
Later, I bumped into a boxed version of Dragon Lore 2 and I immediately bought it. It came with two CDs, and once you completed the first part of the game you entered a city that had both day and night cycles. Whenever it turned to night, you were prompted to insert disc 2, and vice versa. Sadly, this caused many crashes on my system. And even when it didn’t crash, it became annoying very quickly to keep swapping CDs.
I would love to revisit this game in the modern age of disc-less gaming and wonder if it is possible for GOG to release a version that can transition from time of day smoothly. I think it would give this game the fair chance to shine that it never had in the first place. I know my judgment of these titles is heavily clouded by my own ’90s nostalgia—but then again, aren’t we all?
GOG has Dragon Lore 1 in store, and I bought it instantly. I am now playing it with my son. Poor guy would rather play Minecraft, but I guess this is my way of giving him a peek into his old man's good old gaming memories.
So far he is actually intrigued and invested in the story, and he kept talking about it over dinner. Many of the cutscenes, graphics, and animations are so outdated and look pretty ridiculous that we often find ourselves laughing out loud—so I guess that’s a quality in its own right!
