Charming fantasy adventure
It's been a while since the last time I played a proper P&C game and this one has been on my pile of shame for way too long. Chains of Satinav has a pretty interesting atmosphere, starting off quite light-hearted but turns really grim and dark towards the end. While I liked most about the game - especially the art-style, the intriguing story and some fresh gameplay elements - I wasn't too keen on some puzzles, as they required some serious out of the box thinking (e.g. the fairy world). And since this was my first P&C game in years, I ran into quite a few frustrating dead ends. But that's just me. I'm sure other people love those puzzles. Another gripe I have concerns the main character. It feels like there is barely any character development and his whiny demeanor doesn't make it easy to root for him (Note: They voice-acting got a lot better in Memoria). Anyways, playing this made me rediscover my love for P&C games and that's definitely a good thing :)

A magical journey
This game was my introduction into the world of "The Dark Eye", but given the fact that I love fantasy worlds, I was instantly drawn to the premise of the game. Visually, the game is very appealing, each different frame is handcrafted and full of detail. I admit some of the animations are rather stiff, but nothing too dramatic. The story was interesting. Like it was stated in some of the previous reviews, the game starts more lightheartedly and it turns darker towards the second half of the game. I found it a little hard to sympathize with the protagonist - Geron. Based on his life experiences, I can understand why he has the attitude of being alone against the whole world, but even after managing to overcome numerous difficult situations, he was still all about doom and gloom. I did not feel that there was much character development regarding him. On the other hand, his companion, Nuri was the absolute opposite. With her charming and somewhat naive approach to each situation I found her to be absolutely adorable. Gameplaywise the game was fun. I enjoyed the puzzles. I can tell you from personal experience that if you play with the help functions turned off, there is a decent amount of pixel hunting that you will have to do and sometimes your progress will entirely depend on finding the next vital interaction point. But I found the puzzles to be logical, maybe with a few exceptions that required out of the box thinking, but with some trial and error here and there, that can be overcome. The voice-acting and the soundtrack were decent, no complaints there. I found the ending to be a bit abrupt, but the story continues in "Memoria". Overall, it was a solid point-and-click adventure game and I definitely recommend it, especially if you can get it on sale.

B/B+ as a modern Point&Click
The the hand draw art is quite nice. Music and voice acting are good. It tells a typical fantasy story. It is the quest of the hero for saving the world with a few bitter sweet moments moments here and a few dark twists there. Interesting but not mind blowing. The puzzles are mostly fair and logical. Pressing the space bar you can see all interactive elements in the scene. I did had to peep a guide twice on account of not doing certain interactions in the expected order.

Quaint (at times charming) adventure
Chains is a point-n-click adventure game that in many ways is quite unremarkable. The gameplay isn't particularly polished. The puzzles aren't particularly satisfying. The voice acting isn't particularly engaging. etc. etc. Yet there's an enjoyable game under all this if, like me, you can get behind the main characters. Geron is a very reluctant hero, even being a bit of a doomer, but I think that serves to make the story a bit more grounded, even in the fantasy setting of The Dark Eye. Geron's character is believable given his history even if it makes the first act of the game a bit insufferable due to his bad relationship with the rest of the town. Things pick up after his chance encounter with Nuri, a reclusive fairy, and the rest of the plot is essentially driven by the collision of their budding relationship and the dark prophecy that hangs over Geron. The story of Chains is very personal in scope - while there are larger ramifications to the world in the story, they're more a side-effect of events rather than the main driving force of the story. I'm normally a sucker for grand fantasy epics, but I found this small-scale tale strangely satisfying for the most part. It's no masterpiece, but if you like story-driven fantasy adventures, it's worth a look. If you find youself liking it, be sure to check out the (slightly superior in pretty much every way) sequel, Memoria.
