NOTE: The Director’s Cut is free to existing owners of the Dragonfall expansion for Shadowrun Returns.

Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director’s Cut is a standalone release of Harebrained Schemes' critically-acclaimed Dragonfall campaign, which first premiered as a major expansion for Shadowrun Returns. The Director's Cut adds a host of new content and enhancements to the original game: 5 all-new missions, alternate endings, new music, a redesigned interface, team customization options, a revamped combat system, and more - making it the definitive version of this one-of-a-kind cyberpunk RPG experience.

In 2012, magic returned to our world, awakening powerful creatures of myth and legend. Among them was the Great Dragon Feuerschwinge, who emerged without warning from the mountains of Germany, unleashing fire, death, and untold destruction across the countryside. It took German forces nearly four months to finally shoot her down - and when they did, their victory became known as The Dragonfall.

It’s 42 years later - 2054 - and the world has changed. Unchecked advances in technology have blurred the line between man and machine. Elves and trolls walk among us, ruthless corporations bleed the world dry, and Feuerschwinge’s reign of terror is just a distant memory. Germany is splintered - a stable anarchy known as the “Flux State” controls the city of Berlin. It’s a place where power is ephemeral, almost anything goes, and the right connections can be the difference between success and starvation. For you and your team of battle-scarred shadowrunners, there’s no better place to earn a quick payday.

Now, a new threat is rising, one that could mean untold chaos and devastation. One that soon has you and your team caught on the wrong side of a deadly conspiracy. The only clue: whispers of the Dragonfall. Rumors that the Great Dragon Feuerschwinge may still be alive, waiting for the right moment to return…

Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director’s Cut Features:

A Classic, Story-Driven cRPG: See why PC Gamer hailed Dragonfall as “one of the most memorable and complex RPG stories of the decade.” Dragonfall hearkens back to the golden age of computer RPG’s with a novel-like branching narrative full of sharp prose and deep character development. Immerse yourself in a smart, 20+ hour campaign with a diverse cast of all-too-human characters.

A One-of-a-Kind Cyberpunk Setting: Experience the unique “Tech meets Magic” dystopian future of Shadowrun, a fan-favorite game setting now celebrating it’s 25th anniversary. Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director’s Cut is the perfect entry point to the setting for those with no prior Shadowrun experience, while providing plenty of classic Shadowrun characters and tech for veteran players to sink their teeth into.

Command Your Team: Lead a small team of shadowrunners - each with their own outlook, motivations, and backstory. The members of your team are designed to play contrasting roles during missions, and each has a distinct set of skills, abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. But it’s not all about the mission - each team member also has challenges to face in their own lives, which you can choose to brush aside or play an important part in.

Gripping, Turn-Based Tactical Combat: When you’re running the shadows, every turn matters. Choose your actions wisely - move to better cover, charge into melee, or lob a fireball into a crowd of enemies. With over 200 weapons and spells at your disposal, every turn is filled with meaningful choices.

Skill-Based Character Progression: Choose a starting character archetype and build from there! Street Samurai and Physical Adepts use advanced combat skills to dominate the battlefield, Shamans and Mages summon powerful allies and cast deadly spells, while Riggers and Deckers provide critical technological support, projecting their consciousness directly into drones and computer systems. Shadowrun: Dragonfall’s classless skill system allows you to grow your character in any direction you choose.

New in the Director’s Cut:

Standalone: Due to popular demand, Dragonfall is now a completely standalone title!

Five All-New Missions: The Director’s Cut features five all-new original missions, including three related directly to the personal stories of your team members. These missions take you to previously-unseen locales - both within the Flux State and beyond - where you’ll have to face challenging enemies and make tough choices in order to help your team members prevail.

Revamped Combat System: The Dragonfall combat system has received a major overhaul. An all-new armor system adds another tactical layer to the experience, while refined cover and damage mechanics emphasize the importance of battlefield positioning. Complementing these improvements is an upgraded AI system which reacts more intelligently and accurately to your actions.

Redesigned Interface: The Dragonfall in-game interface has also been rebuilt. Spells, items and abilities are now much easier to access, while improved combat feedback allows you to fully understand the tactical situation in any given encounter.

Customize Your Team: Guide your team members as they progress in each of their unique roles, choosing between different focus options to grant them new items and abilities. In addition, if you don’t like a team member’s default spell, item or weapon loadout, you can now customize what they bring on each mission.

Ten New Pieces of Original Music: Fan-favorite composer Jon Everist brings ten new tracks of moody cyberpunk music to the Dragonfall experience, including compositions based on the stories of individual members of your team.

The Complete Dragonfall Soundtrack: As a free bonus, the Director’s Cut includes the entire soundtracks from both Dragonfall AND our previous title, Shadowrun Returns. This also includes the brand new tracks exclusive to the Director’s Cut. Featuring music from the composers of the classic Shadowrun SEGA and SNES games, this exciting cyberpunk soundtrack pays homage to the past with a modern sentiment.

A True CRPG

I realized how much I loved this game when I entered a dialogue fully expecting it to result in a boss fight, and instead used my character's Decking skill in coordination with a sidequest (which seemed trivial and pointless at the time) that I'd completed earlier in order to get the goods I'd come for diplomatically. My party walked out of the room, with our goods, without firing a single shot. This is, truly, a roleplaying game, and that's something that's become rare in the video game scene as of late. The story actually drew me in, which is something I haven't really experienced in a long time, and it was very refreshing. The characters are each interesting, and you actually grow to care for them and understand them as your journey continues. The dialogue system offers plenty of choices right off the bat, and your character's skills and features only open up more. Unlike many games that have come out recently (I'm looking at you, Fallout 4!), the dialogue options actually change the direction of the conversation, rather than always leading to the same exact result. Dialogue can affect the game just as much as (and perhaps even more than) combat. Speaking of the combat, it is just about perfect for a CRPG. It's always just difficult enough that a wrong move can get you killed, but victory is always possible if you use the tools at your disposal wisely. Despite being turn-based and giving you all the time in the world to consider your next move, it always feels tense and real. Many turn-based combat systems feel like you're playing a board game, but in SR:DF it actually feels like you're in a firefight. I haven't yet played Returns or Hong Kong, though I definitely intend to, so I can't compare it to the other two games. What I can say is that this game was a delightfully refreshing return to the CRPG genre for me, and that if you enjoy CRPGs, narratively-driven games, or tabletop roleplaying games, you'll enjoy Dragonfall.

Overstays its Welcome

I loved Shadowrun Returns. It wasn't overly long, had a good story and while it was completely linear, I enjoyed that. Dragonfall is more of the same but with a less intersting (to me) story. Add the inclusion of multiple side missions and the game meanders for too long. There is an over arcing story but the side missions just come across as filler. Which is all side quests are. But these ones are boring and I found getting through them just to continue the main story a slog. Love the setting and gameplay but I preferred Returns.

Not good but hey, I got it for free

I gave one extra star because I got it for free. That being said, this isn't a good game. Sure you can customise your character but since every mission requires a Decker to enable more looting and exploration, you are forced to have certain set of skill and fix choices of companions. Variation doesn't mean a thing since the first mission and things are worse in higher difficulty because whatever your strategy is you are guaranteed to have a bad time hitting your enemy if you don't have a accuracy improving skill or a companion with that skill with you. The story and choices is alright but they don't matter because all the endings are badly presented. I just have to commend the programing of this game because I rarely got error and everything runs smoothly. There are better RPG and Turn based tactics game out there so buy this only if you have money to spare.

Looks good on paper but...

I feel like too many people give this game an easy pass because it is a kickstarter title. I find it is just... boring, lacking depth and ultimately I feel the devs could have done so much more with the IP. The combat is just tedious. It lacks weight, and, whilst it uses an xcom style cover system, the tactical options are severely lacking. The UI and all interfaces (such as levelling up, inventory etc.) are all very clunky to use. You could hardly call this an RPG. You do play a role, but conversations and customisation options are limited. Really, when you boil it down, the role you choose dictates what weapons you'll use, and outside some skills checks for things like decking, that's about it. See above for the review of combat... nuff said. Outside of combat, gameplay involves clicking on icons that pop up to gather gear, items or further the plot. When you talk to someone, you click on responses to get to the end. Then you click on the floor until you reach an objective marker and click on it to change the map... It often feels like a point and click adventure game without the adventure or the game. The story, which everyone touts as amazing, is pretty unengaging. Why can't you trade items between characters?!?!? Especially during combat?!?!? Why can't you select characters to use certain skills outside of combat?!? Is that not the point of gathering a party?!??! It is just confusing why the devs made such a choice for an 'RPG'. I would not recommend this. Save your money. It really is light on features, gameplay and fun.

Decent without being awesome

The third part of the Shadowrunner RPG games is the best looking, and the slightly tweaked game mechanics give you more options in building your character. The game is fun to play, the setting is ... kinda nice and the overall game quality is decent. Having said that, the plot and character development fall kinda short. The previous two games had very engaging storylines and dialogue, i would rate them among the best written games ever. While the first one kind of "railroaded" the story (presumably due to budget restraints), the second one told an almost flawless story with great characters and amazing twists. In comparison, this game seems to be a bit "tired" when it comes to story and presentation. Nothing really wrong with it, it mostly misses the magic that made the first two games stories great. The side characters are great, creative and interesting, but the main protagonsists are very generic, as is the main plot. All in all, good game, buying it is not a mistake, just don't expect it to be as engaging as "Dragonfall"
