NOTE: The Director’s Cut is free to existing owners of the Dragonfall expansion for Shadowrun Returns.

Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director’s Cut is a standalone release of Harebrained Schemes' critically-acclaimed Dragonfall campaign, which first premiered as a major expansion for Shadowrun Returns. The Director's Cut adds a host of new content and enhancements to the original game: 5 all-new missions, alternate endings, new music, a redesigned interface, team customization options, a revamped combat system, and more - making it the definitive version of this one-of-a-kind cyberpunk RPG experience.

In 2012, magic returned to our world, awakening powerful creatures of myth and legend. Among them was the Great Dragon Feuerschwinge, who emerged without warning from the mountains of Germany, unleashing fire, death, and untold destruction across the countryside. It took German forces nearly four months to finally shoot her down - and when they did, their victory became known as The Dragonfall.

It’s 42 years later - 2054 - and the world has changed. Unchecked advances in technology have blurred the line between man and machine. Elves and trolls walk among us, ruthless corporations bleed the world dry, and Feuerschwinge’s reign of terror is just a distant memory. Germany is splintered - a stable anarchy known as the “Flux State” controls the city of Berlin. It’s a place where power is ephemeral, almost anything goes, and the right connections can be the difference between success and starvation. For you and your team of battle-scarred shadowrunners, there’s no better place to earn a quick payday.

Now, a new threat is rising, one that could mean untold chaos and devastation. One that soon has you and your team caught on the wrong side of a deadly conspiracy. The only clue: whispers of the Dragonfall. Rumors that the Great Dragon Feuerschwinge may still be alive, waiting for the right moment to return…

Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director’s Cut Features:

A Classic, Story-Driven cRPG: See why PC Gamer hailed Dragonfall as “one of the most memorable and complex RPG stories of the decade.” Dragonfall hearkens back to the golden age of computer RPG’s with a novel-like branching narrative full of sharp prose and deep character development. Immerse yourself in a smart, 20+ hour campaign with a diverse cast of all-too-human characters.

A One-of-a-Kind Cyberpunk Setting: Experience the unique “Tech meets Magic” dystopian future of Shadowrun, a fan-favorite game setting now celebrating it’s 25th anniversary. Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director’s Cut is the perfect entry point to the setting for those with no prior Shadowrun experience, while providing plenty of classic Shadowrun characters and tech for veteran players to sink their teeth into.

Command Your Team: Lead a small team of shadowrunners - each with their own outlook, motivations, and backstory. The members of your team are designed to play contrasting roles during missions, and each has a distinct set of skills, abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. But it’s not all about the mission - each team member also has challenges to face in their own lives, which you can choose to brush aside or play an important part in.

Gripping, Turn-Based Tactical Combat: When you’re running the shadows, every turn matters. Choose your actions wisely - move to better cover, charge into melee, or lob a fireball into a crowd of enemies. With over 200 weapons and spells at your disposal, every turn is filled with meaningful choices.

Skill-Based Character Progression: Choose a starting character archetype and build from there! Street Samurai and Physical Adepts use advanced combat skills to dominate the battlefield, Shamans and Mages summon powerful allies and cast deadly spells, while Riggers and Deckers provide critical technological support, projecting their consciousness directly into drones and computer systems. Shadowrun: Dragonfall’s classless skill system allows you to grow your character in any direction you choose.

New in the Director’s Cut:

Standalone: Due to popular demand, Dragonfall is now a completely standalone title!

Five All-New Missions: The Director’s Cut features five all-new original missions, including three related directly to the personal stories of your team members. These missions take you to previously-unseen locales - both within the Flux State and beyond - where you’ll have to face challenging enemies and make tough choices in order to help your team members prevail.

Revamped Combat System: The Dragonfall combat system has received a major overhaul. An all-new armor system adds another tactical layer to the experience, while refined cover and damage mechanics emphasize the importance of battlefield positioning. Complementing these improvements is an upgraded AI system which reacts more intelligently and accurately to your actions.

Redesigned Interface: The Dragonfall in-game interface has also been rebuilt. Spells, items and abilities are now much easier to access, while improved combat feedback allows you to fully understand the tactical situation in any given encounter.

Customize Your Team: Guide your team members as they progress in each of their unique roles, choosing between different focus options to grant them new items and abilities. In addition, if you don’t like a team member’s default spell, item or weapon loadout, you can now customize what they bring on each mission.

Ten New Pieces of Original Music: Fan-favorite composer Jon Everist brings ten new tracks of moody cyberpunk music to the Dragonfall experience, including compositions based on the stories of individual members of your team.

The Complete Dragonfall Soundtrack: As a free bonus, the Director’s Cut includes the entire soundtracks from both Dragonfall AND our previous title, Shadowrun Returns. This also includes the brand new tracks exclusive to the Director’s Cut. Featuring music from the composers of the classic Shadowrun SEGA and SNES games, this exciting cyberpunk soundtrack pays homage to the past with a modern sentiment.

Good story, nice combat.

I ran through the campaign on hard n about 35 hours with a melee character. The fighting was challenging in he beginning but I went on power creep through the ending. I'm new to Shadowrun, but I'd go as far as to give a big plus for the rules (note: you won't be pushing over nine points for any skill in this campaign). The story was good, as in than god they did this game good. The main stats were often used in the game for actions outside combat I really hope that other developers will follow on this... Final note: why didn't I have a lying option for the very last piece of dialogue !?!?

Adds features and polish but lacks charm

Shadowrun Returns: Dragonfall adds features and polish to the original game, along with a new story, but lacks the charm of its predecessor. The story is interesting and has various endings, which is a great improvement over the extremely linear Dead Man’s Switch campaign. At times, I felt enthralled by the plot and extended gameplay sessions for “5 more minutes” in order to know what would happen next. Side quests are now more numerous. Such like the main story line, there’re different ways in which you can resolve a secondary mission. Character stat’s, such as your Willpower or Quickness, now open dialogue options that can be used to gather more intel or solve an encounter in a nonviolent way. You also gain a team of shadowrunners, who level up and have they own side quests and storylines, and a base of operations, that includes a PC with which you can access jobs and a bulletin board. Combat remains, essentially, the same as the original. Armor can “break” or be penetrated, reducing the amount of damage that is deflect by your attire. Cover can block 100% of incoming damage, although you now must account for the positioning of your shadowrunners so to avoid “flanking” damage multipliers. Magic still feels underwhelming and some classes reign supreme over others. Unfortunately, the writing is a couple of notches below the original in terms of quality. The art style is also not as charming as the game seems less cyberpunk-y than the original. As such, the overall ambiance is less immersive. Overall, Dragonfall, with its 30 hours of gameplay and good replay value, is worth a try even at full retail price.

Lean, focused, story-driven RPG

Shadowrun: Dragonfall is a really tightly focused, story-driven game that uses unusually good writing, atmospheric 2D backgrounds, and striking music to create an immersive, fun game. It doesn't do scope, like a Baldur's Gate. It's got a lot of freedom and branching paths, but it's not a particularly open game in the sense of having a giant world - the 'world' of the game are a few detailed blocks of scifi Berlin and the various interesting locations you visit on missions. The underlying systems are fairly simple - there's no massive loot or inventory system, there's no massive list of spells or skills. What the game does well is telling a very specific, focused, small story with a real sense of detail. Most big RPG's are like the entire run of a TV show, with multiple 23-episode seasons, multiple arcs, huge casts of characters coming and going. Dragonfall is like an 8-episode miniseries. It's fully committed to telling one, highly detailed, reactive story, and after 15-20 hours of gameplay, it's done. The writing is also strikingly good, juggling a fun balance between a "real" "gritty" modern-future cyberpunk setting with elaborate flights of fantasy and a sense of fun. The game mechanics are good, and elegant. They're hugely improved over Shadowrun Returns, which had pretty bad 'gamefeel', and a lot of unbalanced choices. The game's graphics are straightforward, but the 2D backgrounds exude a lot of atmosphere. 5 Stars may be a bit much for such a straightforward game, but I feel like this just a real perfect, polished kernel of a game. It's great precisely because it doesn't try too much. There's nothing to add, and nothing to subtract, and that's rare with RPG's, which can be bloated or fall into grinding tedium. There is absolutely no grinding here, very little grappling with trying to min-max game mechanics, just a very tightly focused, reactive science fiction story with a great sense of tone.

A great campaign

The game mechanics have been improved from the first game. The campaign itself is very well written and really immersive. If you like tactical RPGs and cyberpunk, you'll love this.

Good, but not Great

First, let me say that 3 stars is not a bad score. It's an average score, which is fitting since this is an average game. It's not a bad game, but it's not a great game either. Pros: + It has an interesting story that kept me entertained throughout. + Multiple ways to accomplish goals during missions. + Sometimes competing mission objectives forcing you to pick a side. + Mostly satisfying combat. + Runs perfect in 21:9 + Good soundtrack. + Meaningful choices that affect the story. Cons: - No voice acting. That's fine 20 years ago, but it's definitely a negative mark these days. - It has an interesting character development system that only applies to your main character. The other characters level up and you pick one of two upgrades to their skills. - It's not really a 3D environment. It's 2D drawn to look 3D. That's fine in theory, but in practice you'll be wishing for the ability to rotate the camera. Characters will often get lost in the scenery and you can't see what's going on. - The AI is pretty stupid. You can cheese most fights if you want by leading the enemy on a merry chase and picking them off a few at a time. - Inventory management is a pain. You can't swap items between your party members except at the beginning of a mission. If you pick up an item mid-mission, it either goes into your inventory (if you have space) or into your stash back at HQ. You can't give it to one of your party characters. - Party characters have fixed weapons and armor. You can sometimes give them an additional weapon if they have a empty weapon slot, but they won't drop their base weapon regardless of how terrible it is. And you can't give them better armor to wear. It took me just over 25 hours to beat, so a pretty good length. It ended just around the time I was starting to get bored with it. There's a lot of potential here and it would have been great with a little more time in the oven. As it stands, it's just good, not great.
