What went wrong?

I wonder what went wrong when they made this sequel. The first game was a smooth, fun space game with a good looking and intuitive UI, smooth controls, nice graphics and designs and it just all came together really nicely. I even enjoyed the whole "broadside" concept with "2D" flying because it worked and one often fly kinda "2D" in space games anyway. I also love the colorful characters that have quite good voice acting. The sequel, despite being released 5 years later feels much older. The UI is ugly and clunky, the controls are sluggish and imprecise, the graphics are surprisingly mediocre and it all feels cramped. The first game I love, completed it several times, I got sick of this sequel after just a few minutes. I'm glad I bought it on sale, definitely not worth the full price. I really hope the game studio can make a strong comeback with a third game, since they got so many things right in the first game.

A relaxing mix of roleplay & simulation

Rebel Galaxy Outlaw is a relaxing game that takes roleplaying elements, by incarnating Juno Markev and deciding yourself whether she should be a law-abiding citizen or engage in space piracy (or anything in-between), and mixes it with a space simulation. Now before yelling, yes, it doesn't feel as a complete space simulation - while many options are available and only ask to be assigned shortcuts to get it closer to the real deal, the game is made to be playable with (almost) only the mouse, so don't expect that terrible a challenge. That being said, where RGO truly shines is its ambiance. While the design in its essence remains simple and is accessible to a very wide audience, RGO immerses you into a world made of countless hues of grey, from lawful hard-working people to trigger-happy leeches. Your objectives will not always please either the cops either pirates, but you do what must be done so that Juno gets answers to the situation she found herself in. Don't expect a colossal, memorable storyline but it's satisfying enough, fits well the ambiance and the music is simply excellent! As simple as it was, I enjoyed playing the space trucker, slow-moving, harrassed by pirates, making the most of every window of opportunity as I couldn't escape, struggling with my risky deliveries only to improve my beast of burden's equipment - that, in order to take on even riskier deliveries, only to find out sometimes my target market isn't in a real need of my freight and offers an uninteresting deal. Now, while simple doesn't mean boring, the game may feel repetitive if you play too long in a day, which lowered the note for me. It takes a bit of grinding here and there to improve your equipment or purchase a new ship, but it'll entertain you nonetheless!

Zündet nicht richtig...

Ja, der Vorgänger Rebel Galaxy war ein tolles Spiel, bei dem vieles gepasst hat. Stimmung, Musik, die "Dickschiffe" mit ihrem schwerfälligen Handling und den seitlichen Geschützen. Und die Balance hat auch gestimmt. Als dann Rebel Galaxy Outlaw angekündigt wurde, hoffte jeder auf einen würdigen Nachfolger von Freelancer oder Privateer. Leider enttäuscht Rebel Galaxy Outlaw auf ganzer Linie. Vorteile: - Stimmige Musik - Gute Vertonung Nachteile: - Dogfights mit wenig Abwechslung - Zu wenige Schiffe, die außerdem allesamt hässlich sind - Wenig spielerische Abwechslung - Ziemlich dünne Story - Gegner skalieren mit der eigenen Ausrüstung, so dass Upgrades im Grunde sinnlos sind - Kämpfe sind nicht vermeidbar (selbst wenn man möchte) - Grindlastig Rebel Galaxy Outlaw spielt definitiv NICHT in der Klasse von Privateer oder Freelancer. Es gibt zwar Anleihen, aber insgesamt ist das Balancing grottenschlecht und die spielerische Vielfalt ist doch sehr rudimentär. Die Steuerung mit der Auto-Follow Funktion ist innovativ, aber gleichzeit bleibt dadurch doch ziemlich viel Spielspaß auf der Strecke. Ohne diese Funktion ist die Maussteuerung aber praktisch unmöglich. Der Entwickler Double Damage Games hat das Spiel entgegen ursprünglicher Versprechen zunächst EPIC-exklusiv veröffentlicht. Mittlerweile ist es auch auf GOG erhältlich. Wenn das Spiel für unter 10€ im Angebot zu haben sein sollte, könnt ihr es gerne mal versuchen. Ein paar Stunden Spaß werdet ihr damit haben. Aber für mehr Geld solltet ihr euch nach besseren Alternativen umsehen! Rebel Galaxy Outlaw ist einfach nicht mehr wert.

I don't like it.

I liked the previous game a lot. It was easy to learn and fair to play against.... this one is not. No matter what you do, you will never be able to go solo against a lot of enemies at once, nor take on larger ships and win without aid. The game also requires a lot of grinding and the way the entire thing is focused on fighters is really not to my liking! The equipment system, music and UI are all pretty good. But I've been playing video games all my life and this is just too much of a pain in the ass, even when I don't select something difficult to do. The last straw was when I found out I need to do this emp weapon quest and I have to take down 5 enemies at once WITHOUT killing them.... and the emp weapon doesn't have homing! Anyone who's played a space game like this will know that makes it pretty much impossible to hit anything. I'm fed up with this; it's just too much of a pain in the ass. I'd rather go back and play the original.

Big dissapointment

When they pulled out this stunt on their fanbase i at least expected an improvement over the previous iteration. The autopilot feature breaks the game completely, i dont know who came up with it but they clearly have no clue how to make a game. Since the game feels like a grindfest you will be spamming that autopilot button, because there is absolutely no reason to use the sublight travel, you cannot steer yourself, so you cant avoid encounters at all, and its going to happen the same way, every single time. You will get pulled out of fast travel into an ambush being outnumbered by enemies every single time, this is what the game designers believe to be a fair challenge, they surround you and tear you apart because you have no way to maneuver out of a swarming attack like this. At least the first rebel galaxy remedied this by having wingmen, in this game you have nothing. 6 ships, this is not a joke, this is what you get. 12 in total if you count the variants, which are just the same ships colored different with small changes. Farm merchant missions at first, get a good afterburner to outrun most encounters, get the big merchant ship, farm merchant missions, outrun encounters, slowly upgrade your shit, boring as shit. If you want to play the way they designed this game, you will spend double time grinding. Once you feel comfortable you can start fighting enemies, you get some buddies to help you out,. What happened to the broadside combat of the previous game? that was the main appeal for me, you dont even get any capital ship unlike the previous game. These devs accepted a deal with epic games for a year of exclusivity away from the platform that made them popular, they got an injection of money for their game development, and this shit feels that is still early access, 2 years down the line. Also it crashes your pc if you try to quit the game.
