I agree with Herzalot: the game does suffer from awful repetition. A large number of quests are exactly the same (deliver passports, destroy convoy, etc). There is a somewhat badly executed overarching storyline which, when you can figure out what is going on, is rather good. Graphics are laptop-meltingly superb, despite the dull brown colour scheme. Enemy AI is passable, with flanking manoeuvres and use of vehicles, although their hearing is annoyingly good. For all it's faults, FC2 is light years better than FC1, which I honestly couldn't play for more than a single dull hour. Best game to compare it to in my experience would be the Stalker franchise, which definitely had more depth and variety. FC2 manages a more earthy, realistic environment. Nothing can compare to the joy of whizzing over the dunes in a buggy chasing zebra, or stalking a thug in the long grass. Good value at $9.99!

A true sandbox game

Far Cry 2 will severely disappoint you if you expect a story-driven game that guides you through it. The missions are generic at best. Similar contacts will give you similar missions. All the time. There are assassinations, attacks on convoys and the slightly more varied story missions., but usually you have to kill people, get something or blow something up. There are two factions in the game, but you cannot become part of one. You always have to eventually do all the missions for either faction to progress in the story. And everyone will always try to kill you on sight. During the faction missions the bosses tell you that this is because the missions are secret and the goons don't know about them. This explanation is flimsy, to say the least. And the checkpoints respawn so quickly that there's really no value in attacking one unless you want something from in there. They also make the roads pretty useless. If you want to go somewhere without a fight, you will have to go offroad. So this doesn't sound all that great so far, right? And yet, I have come to love this game because I have accepted that it is a sandbox game. The missions are setups for you to go somewhere and play the game. And gameplay is what makes his game so great. The gunplay is outstanding. The fact that your selection of weapons is limited to three guns at a time makes you think about how you want to approach a confrontation. You have to plan your attacks, especially on higher difficulties. The AI uses the environment very well and is surprisingly challenging. I have rarely experienced gunfights as tense as the standoffs in this game when you fight your way through a guard post with an assault rifle, moving from cover to cover. After a while I even could accept why everyone attacks me. This is a warzone. The civilians are mostly out. Someone who does not belong to your own faction must be an enemy. So shoot first, ask later. Play it like a sandbox game. Play it slow. You decide what you do.

even modded it's just mediocre

German text below (short) I base this review on the assumption that it is even worse without mods like "redux". So when feeling that deserves two to three stars, I went for two. What's decent? The gunplay is fine with several options to adept it to your style; The upgrade options are not amazing but still on the good side; every now and then the story gets interesting; driving is fun to some extend What I don't like: Compared to its content the world is too large; wayfinding can be annoying. I don't think, that every game needs fasttravel und markers all the time. However, the world building is too monotonous to allow satisfying navigation. The AI is cheating: The same vehicles are faster when driven by enemies. Also it seems that they can easily spot you through vegetation. Invisible walls when you should be able to pass. Repetetive missions, characters you don't care for, story is hardly interesting. Too often you have to replace your weapons, as they jam after 1-3 missions. Game crashes every couple of hours (Intel xmg notebook woth 1660 ti) ----------------- Deutsch: Das Spiel ist durchaus spielbar, das Waffengefühl geht in Ordnung und unterstützt verschiedene Spielweisen. Autos steuern sich eher arcadig statt realistisch (finde ich gut, ist aber Geschmackssache). Leider ist die Welt zu leblos, Gegner cheaten (deren Autos sind schneller und es scheint als könnten sie einen auch durch Gebüsch zielsicher entdecken), Missionen ähneln sich meist zu sehr, uninteressante Charaktere, langweilige Geschichte. Die Wegfindung ist eher schlecht. Nach 1-2 Missionen sollte man seine Waffen austauschen (Ladehemmungen). Zudem stürzt das Spiel alle paar Stunden ab. Die Landschaft mag durchaus ihre Reiz haben aber das Spiel ist einfach viel zu lang gezogen, unausgereift und mit wenig Höhepunkten, so dass sich die Atmosphäre rasch abnutzt.

A true Gem but raw and uncut

This game, is in it's own right, brilliant, but suffered in the polls, and in one way rightly so, as many fans of Far Cry expected a continuation of the story, instead we got one of the best 1st person war shooters there has been for single play experience, the game is slower than the 1st in the franchise passing on the arcade style flash bang instant action that comes with most games, instead going with the RPG experience offering a more realistic example of driving in the environment and with encounters. one of the best things in this game for me is flushing out the enemy mercenaries and bandits by setting fire to the grass they are all hiding in. The Driving is better than in the first game but still needed work in my opinion, overall this game is far better than the reviews it usually gets, mostly I think because those reviews are by people who prefer the fast paced action genre rather than the think first action games as this one is. It should not be overlooked based on other people reviews, especially at the price it goes for now, it still plays better than many of the newer titles out there. a raw gem stone that should you play through it will sparkle like a well cut diamond by the end.

Great game!

I was first reluctant to buy this game: I've read a lot of bad things about it. The checkpoints are said to be a pain because of constant respawning, for example. Or that the Dunia engine would not live up to the Cryengine. Instead I find myself enjoying the game a lot. I like especially that there are no beasts or monsters - well, at least no non-human ones. The music is great. It provides an atmosphere of constant danger, which fits the setting. The respawning checkpoints add to this. After a while you'll figure out anyway which checkpoints are problematic and how to get rid of others quickly. The story is so far pretty neat, also the way it is delivered. It is very immersive. What I don't like are invisible walls at some places where you'd expect to be able to still go on - some rocks seem pretty deliberatly unclimbable, but it's only a minor nuisance. If you like the original Far Cry, if you like the Stalker series - this game is for you. It absolutely lives up to it. I can fully recommend it. It's not as dark and as frightening as Stalker though.
