Boring
I bought this game many years ago. Then i played it for around 1 hour. After a year passed i was thinking: hey you still have Far Cry 2, why did i stopped playing it back then? so i played it again and after 30 minutes i remembered why. This game is unbeliveable boring. It is one of the few games, were is just dont have the interesst to play it. The developers must have sit there and were thinking: ok how can we stretch the playing time of this game? Oh yeah lets send the player over the whole map for each mission. And this is what this game does. 70% of the time youre playing the game, you are driving trough the world to reach to missions. Everytime you pass roadblocks that are refilled again and again and again... and the next problem is: every mission is in the end the same: a gunfight in a small village. To make it short: avoid this game! Far Cry 2 is the perfect example for supreme graphix and effects at the cost of a worthless and extreme boring gameplay.

Glitchy snorefest with a few good ideas
First, the good. The gunfights are generally satisfying, fast-paced, and tactical. On the harder levels, the AI is mostly intelligent and gives a good fight. Unfortunately, the enemies also have some very annoying quirks -- in particular, the enemies armed with RPGs and recoilless rifles have literally infinite vision range once alerted. Some enemies routinely glitch inside boulders or move into a bush and never leave, making clearing outposts a massive chore. Factions are non-existent outside a couple of missions, which is crudely lampshaded in every other mission intro with "oh, and our guys will shoot at you too. Good luck" The Buddy system is a cool way of giving you an extra life, new mission objectives, and help with some of the harder fights. Unfortunately, the Buddy too falls prey to the weird AI and clipping glitches. If there is even one enemy in the area (including ones clipped into a rock or tree..), the Buddy will not despawn and be considered "killed" if you leave the area. The only way to find out whether or not this has happened is to leave the area and go to a Safe House. Which autosaves the game before you find out if the buddy is "abandoned"/KIA or "Captured". There is no mechanic to rescue or replace a lost buddy despite many other character options as well as large prison areas in both Acts, and the other characters using the same Relationship system with none of the benefits. Finally, the design emphasizes traversal time over any *fun* aspects of gameplay. The hang-glider physics are poor and driving along roads is a death sentence at higher difficulties. Even brand-new weapons with upgraded durability wear out after 2-3 missions and must be replaced at one of a handful of locations. Missions will send you all the way across the map, often several times. I got deep into the second act, staring down yet another 40-minute zig-zag across the entirety of the playing area for three 10-minute fights and simply stopped caring.

Top tier Far Cry experience
Flawed game but its flaws allow it to be what it is - an immersive mercenary simulator. The best parts are tense shootouts in slums and scrapyards where you really have to use your senses to locate your enemies. No GPS, HUD icons, or highlighter. The AI is more reactive and unforgiving compared to later games. Stealth is extra challenging, but feels really rewarding to pull off. Lots of jungle driving with surprisingly good driving physics. You have to equip a physical map to see where you are and plan travel. Ammo feels precious, weapons degrade over time, and you have to resupply on malaria meds. Not that hard, but the game keeps a nice baseline of tension that makes even the more repetitive and slow moments exhilirating.

I love the mod overhaul for this
I've been playing this game with a Mod Overhaul, the game is mostly still as I remember it when I use to play this so often back in the ye'olde days. The changes the overhaul has been developed, makes the combat more bearable. The enemies aren't constantly spawning like 10 feet away right in front of me like what happened on Vanilla gaming. The visual effects were also polished up as well, weapon handling feels more smoother than what I was use to. Travelling around by foot or on vehicle through the overhaul has been a solid experience. There are far too many alterations for me to list, the modding has helped me place in a great amount of hours in to Farcry 2.
