Could have been much better

I got this game on sale and I got to say, I had greater hopes for it. First and foremost, the good: It is a pretty faitful adaptation of the novel ( I haven't read it in years, but I remember parts of it) and the story is pretty good. game looks pretty good at times. Cartoony but it fits this game. A huge variation of characters. the bad: gameplay is pretty simple which is not a bad thing. However, the camera often get stuck in parts of the world and it makes it hard to follow the action. Sometimes, your special ability doesn't work at all. I have often done an attack that should connect but it did not. In cutscenes, music often does not play at all. It remove the impact the scenes should have. A lot of bugs and glitches. Overall, I would recommend it, but only on sale.

A good story let down by poor gameplay.

The Dwarves is a mixed bag. The storyline is good and follows the book pretty closely with a few slight changes. Events that don't feature Tungdil are absent as are a few characters like Mallen and Sverd. There's a character in the game, Giralda who isn't in the first book, she's cool but could've been fleshed out a little more. The way the game is narrated feels nice and cosy, although it is mostly done through voice over and text boxes on the world map. The voice acting and writing are good and the games greatest strengths. Big events are shown in cut scenes, which mostly look nice and show off the character design, which is a bit cartoonish but charming. Other storytelling is done through point and click adventure style levels. These work pretty well and you can tell King Art's team have some experience with that genre. Unfortunately, the combat engine is really disappointing. The quasi tactical battles feel awkard on both a mouse and keyboard and with an Xbox controller. The way commands are issued feels sloppy. The companion AI is awful, ai characters either stand still or run to their deaths. Archers fight like melee characters. The power ups are bland. Enemies mostly just swarm, it's too chaotic for RTWP. The battles are repetitive with objectives mostly consisting of killing dozens of orcs or bringing your party to one end of the map. The boss fights aren't so much challenging as they are frustrating and time consuming, the bosses frequently teleport or heal in a way that extends the fights but doesn't make them more fun. The camera gets in the way a lot. It's somewhat easier to deal with using a controller, but it's still requires frequent adjusting. The menus on the character selection and equipment screen on the other hand, are easy with a mouse and keyboard but really hard to navigate with a controller. Hopefully they'll make a better sequel. The story is great, and there's a lot of potential but it needs a lot of the kinks ironed out.

Gute Umsetzung des Romans

Hallo Gamerinnen und Gamer, wer sich das Spiel vor dem Kauf ansehen will schaut bitte kurz auf meinem Youtube Channel vorbei: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLg7V5ku48dVHedN10Qi29opxR-JwqGsbn Mein Eindruck: Das Spiel ält sich zu großen Teilen an die Ereignisse aus dem ersten Buch. Die Charaktäre und Orte sind liebevoll gestaltet. Hier mein Lob an die Entwickler, die direkt mit dem Autor und den Fans (aus der Kickstarter Kampagne) zusammen gearbeite haben. Die Charaktäre und deren Motivation wurde im spiel nicht verfälscht. Es gibt auch eine kleine Questreihe dem Blind Guardian zu huldigen. Die Gruppe hat bei der musikalischen Untermalung mitgewirt. Keine Sorge es wird nur an einer Stelle Metal eingespielt und da passt es sehr gut. Wichtige Story momente werden in kurzen Videos eingespielt und auch die Resien sind durch die ausgezeichnet eingesprochnen Ereignisse nie langweilig. Die Kämpfe sind meistens Fair wenn es auch hi und da mal aus Bug-Gründen etwas hakt. Das kommt aber sehr selten vor, und man kann der Ursache beim zweiten Versuch aus dem Weg gehen. Das kreative Kampfsystem das zu 80% aus Crwod-Control besteht ist auf jeden Fall ein Pluspunkt der Spiels. Alles in allem eine epische Geschichte zum nachspielen, mit ausgezeichneten deutschen Sprechern und gut umgesetztem Kampfsystem. Das Spiel ist auf jeden Fall sein Geld wert. Viel Spass beim Spielen, Euer Matze vom Youtube Daddelkanal (neu.. Cr1spy Plays ist der alte Kanal ;) )

A satisfying experience

At first, the "storybook with battle set pieces and occasional point & click" feels amateurish, as did the at times choppy transitions between game and cutscenes, as well as a few audio issues and repeated lines of dialogue (played the game in German). But The Dwarves slowly grows on you, based as it is on a quality fantasy series with a fairly refreshing concept centred on that eternal understudy of fantasy - the dwarf - and it does a pretty good job of conveying the epic atmosphere of the few battling against many. Also, while you might be frustrated at first at the characters' erratic movement in battle, and how it hinders strategic positioning, it actually feels very realistic - as it were - and different from most other games, and you learn to compensate with their special abilities. Great soundtrack by Benny Oschmann, as usual, and, speaking about the music, props to the devs for making sure there was a way around an immersion-breaking part of the game involving music and a certain German power metal band. The Dwarves isn't a deep game, and also rather short, which, if you haven't read the novels, might make you feel like you barely got to know many of the characters. But it's solid, has good production values, is well written and vivid, and makes for a bite-sized satisfying experience.
