The explosive return of ludicrous gibs!

Rise of the Triad, a very modern take on classic ultra-violent FPS gameplay, filled to the brim with over-the-top humor and gore, and offering hours upon hours of fast-paced crazy action in single and multi-player mode, is available on GOG.com for only $14.99.

After nearly two decades one of the most memorable first-person shooters returns with a blood-dripping, gib-blasting, gun-slinging, rocket-spamming vengeance! The ominous organization known as "The Triad" is plotting to take over the world by force, terror, and apparent nazi symbolism. Is up to the agents of H.U.N.T.--High-risk United Nations Task-force--to stop the evildoers once and for all, preferably by splattering them all over their (not so) secret base walls. Be warned, there are even darker forces at play, here, as the Triad is known to dabble in the occult and demonic worship, as a way of reaching for power to obtain their evil goals. Oh, and it has a dog-mode.

Rise of the Triad: Modern K9 Warfare trailer

Rise of the Triad brings back everything we loved about the first-person shooters of the 1990s. Swarms of enemies, no hand-holding, awesome guns, badass one-liners, a pretense story, and ridiculous amounts of virtual guts flying all over the place--all checked and accounted for. Apart from a diverse and challenging single-player campaign, that pays a tribute to the game's predecessor, the new Rise of the Triad offers many multi-player game modes (the game supports its own DRM-free server network). The game's fully moddable and a robust creative tool comes with every copy, so you can extend your experience indefinitely. All that, for a fraction of the price of most modern FPS games of comparable scale!

We promise, nothing can make a classic FPS fan feel as good as spamming lead at the minions of evil and watching their insides painting the walls red in Rise of the Triad, for only $14.99 on GOG.com

Mjauv: No particle effects. No lightning effects whatsoever. Enemies get stuck in the terrain. Terrible enemy animations. Effects such as blood sprouting from shot enemies looks like something from 2003-2004. Basically no physical objects that can be manipulated apart from exploding barrels. Shitty AI with lousy path finding and at a lot of times, the enemies fail to react to your presence.

All in all the action is mediocre at best, the graphics are S-H-I-T and it is obvious that the developers have put absolutely minimum effort into making the world of TROTT feel alive in any way whatsoever. Everything about this game is minimal effort - the only reason to buy it is if punishing difficulty itself feels rewarding to you. Otherwise - avoid this shit burger.

And I would like to top off and say that I would LOVE to be able to say something else with a straight face. A PC-exclusive old school shooter? It's a very enticing thought but the fact is that TROTT is a bad product, period.
Yowza, that is not a lot of positive things.
Some of the reviews seem to be more positive, but they also tend to focus on the price and the multiplayer.
It's always interesting to see how different people seem to have completely different experiences.

AlienMind: Mjauv: This game has all kind of effects. Didn't you find "Advanced Options"->"Ludicrous" settings?
Kind of silly to give $14.99 and expecting graphics of games costing twice that.
As the guy said, Serious Sam and Hard Reset look magnitudes better for a similar price.
I did not get very far as I just wanted to verify installation and settings, but the graphics were fine to me. I set them on the default "high" but then slid some choice ones up to "ludicrous". I saw some dropped frames so I'll probably back some settings back down.

I think I'm going to enjoy this, what I played was really fun.
So has anyone tried out the multiplayer yet?.

Andremop: While I won't buy the game - too modern for my GOG collection - I wouldn't mind being treated with that kind of animation on the front page anytime a new game is released - well done!
Uhm, its a remake, so not really a modern game.

Rise of the Triad: Dark War (abbreviated as ROTT) is a first-person shooter video game that was first released in 1994 as shareware and developed by Apogee Software (formerly 3D Realms). The members of the development team involved referred to themselves as "The Developers of Incredible Power". The player can choose one of five different characters to play as, each bearing unique attributes such as height, speed, and endurance.

Rise of the Triad is a first-person shooter (FPS) that Interceptor Entertainment is developing for Apogee Software, released for Steam and GOG.com on 31 July 2013. During a demonstration at QuakeCon 2012, the developers indicated that the game is a revival of the earlier Rise of the Triad, which 3D Realms published as Apogee Software Ltd. in 1995.

Unless your of the opinion that a remake is still modern.

fortune_p_dawg: Woah, tough critic. So, as someone who doesn't typically play brand new first person shooters on PC, I'm curious as to what you were expecting.

I think it looks pretty damn good to be honest with you.

Mjauv: I was expecting something like Hard Reset. Or Serious Sam 3.

I have maxed out the graphic options and the game is seriously butt-ugly. I would love to contend the opposite but this game was a h-u-g-e let down. The game starts off with a intro consisting of shitty cartoon animations. Like Blood Dragon yet infinitely worse. They aren't even interactive. When starting the game, the action itself is stiff, the explosions looks like they where from a russian game from 2005 and the melee attack is basically just an animation - as in an flashing to an instant knife-pose then back to the regular gun. The level geometry is very basic. Shall I continue?
what's it like being a faggot?
I think Mjauv NEVER player original game otherwise he wouldn't call intro as shitty cartoon animation. Whole game has tongue in a cheek feel, it's unrealistic and it should be. Besides, compare that simple slides with subtitles intro from original with high quality digital comic from reboot in actual game.

Also everything described in his post is what stayed faithful, maybe even too close to original game.

While your moronic ramblings are quite amuzing to read; I very much enjoyed the original game. What I argue is that TROTT is a lousy product because the developers seems to settle for the bare minimum in a lot of areas.
Hard Reset features drawn comics as the intro for every level but does it a whole lot better than TROTT.
Call of Juarez - Gunslinger does the same.
Even Blood Dragons comics are better.

The ones in this game features minimal animations, the drawings themselves are dull and it does nothing to actually suck you in. As for the actual action - both Serious Sam 3 and Hard Reset features large open areas with colorful, gory mayhem, hilarious gunplay and adrenaline-pumping action. TROTT is, in comparison, simply boring.

The graphics are much worse than other budget/indie titles such as COJ Gunslinger, Hard Reset, Serious Sam 3, Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 etc. Defending lousy voice acting and crappy animations because its "retro" is just about the weakest argument ever. Yeah, I get that the game is a remake but it's 2013 now, expectations are simply higher.

Yes, to me it is. I played the original a lot, and if for some reason I feel like playing this game again, I'll either buy the original from GOG or this new remake from Steam (it's way cheaper due to regional pricing for me). I tend to keep my GOG collection for old sentimental classics games only, mostly.

Would you care to show us with pictures and/or videos? I think it would prove your point far more effectively than using just words.
Does anyone know how to force remap of keybindings?? I'm using "standard" arrow keys (on right had side of keyboard not "WASD" keys) to move and generally use "/" for jump , "." for duck, and would like to keep all controls on RIGHT HAND side of keyboard.

The options will not let me use RIGHTSHIFT, or RIGHT ALT or RIGHT Ctrll or any non alpha key like "/", "," "." etc.

You'd think with all the effort to re-"port" (I know game wasn't a "port" to PC) that more control of keybindings could be done?

Plus I did the preorder (suppose to get 3 or 4 add-ons") and there doesn't seem to be any added-on content other than basic game???

Thanks
Larry

machete234 and Kristian, do you know your system specs (i.e. graphics card, memory, CPU, Operating System)? It might help find the problem. (For example, if machete234 has an ATI/AMD card, while Kristian has a NVIDIA card, it might be that the game is heavily optimized for NVIDIA graphics cards.)

EDIT: machete234, I think it might help you if you sent your system specs and a description of your problem off to GOG.com's Technical Support people as they'll likely be able to walk you through your problem.
