The explosive return of ludicrous gibs!

Rise of the Triad, a very modern take on classic ultra-violent FPS gameplay, filled to the brim with over-the-top humor and gore, and offering hours upon hours of fast-paced crazy action in single and multi-player mode, is available on GOG.com for only $14.99.

After nearly two decades one of the most memorable first-person shooters returns with a blood-dripping, gib-blasting, gun-slinging, rocket-spamming vengeance! The ominous organization known as "The Triad" is plotting to take over the world by force, terror, and apparent nazi symbolism. Is up to the agents of H.U.N.T.--High-risk United Nations Task-force--to stop the evildoers once and for all, preferably by splattering them all over their (not so) secret base walls. Be warned, there are even darker forces at play, here, as the Triad is known to dabble in the occult and demonic worship, as a way of reaching for power to obtain their evil goals. Oh, and it has a dog-mode.

Rise of the Triad: Modern K9 Warfare trailer

Rise of the Triad brings back everything we loved about the first-person shooters of the 1990s. Swarms of enemies, no hand-holding, awesome guns, badass one-liners, a pretense story, and ridiculous amounts of virtual guts flying all over the place--all checked and accounted for. Apart from a diverse and challenging single-player campaign, that pays a tribute to the game's predecessor, the new Rise of the Triad offers many multi-player game modes (the game supports its own DRM-free server network). The game's fully moddable and a robust creative tool comes with every copy, so you can extend your experience indefinitely. All that, for a fraction of the price of most modern FPS games of comparable scale!

We promise, nothing can make a classic FPS fan feel as good as spamming lead at the minions of evil and watching their insides painting the walls red in Rise of the Triad, for only $14.99 on GOG.com

Mjauv: I was expecting something like Hard Reset. Or Serious Sam 3.

I have maxed out the graphic options and the game is seriously butt-ugly. I would love to contend the opposite but this game was a h-u-g-e let down. The game starts off with a intro consisting of shitty cartoon animations. Like Blood Dragon yet infinitely worse. They aren't even interactive. When starting the game, the action itself is stiff, the explosions looks like they where from a russian game from 2005 and the melee attack is basically just an animation - as in an flashing to an instant knife-pose then back to the regular gun. The level geometry is very basic. Shall I continue?

SovietSharkey: So far your argument is you hate the game because it isn't Crysis graphics wise
Keep up the great job convincing us not to buy
He mentioned 2 other indie FPSs, pretty terrible comeback from you.
Mad props for the badass opening on the front page, GOG. :) I'm curious how that was done. Does it involve Javascript, or is the latest version of HTML sufficient? (Obviously it's not Flash)

EDIT: Also, any way we could get that animation, like we got the Shodan animation? :) http://www.gog.com/forum/rise_of_the_triad_series/like_with_the_ss2_animation_could_we_get_this_front_page_one

Smannesman: Please do.
No particle effects. No lightning effects whatsoever. Enemies get stuck in the terrain. Terrible enemy animations. Effects such as blood sprouting from shot enemies looks like something from 2003-2004. Basically no physical objects that can be manipulated apart from exploding barrels. Shitty AI with lousy path finding and at a lot of times, the enemies fail to react to your presence.

All in all the action is mediocre at best, the graphics are S-H-I-T and it is obvious that the developers have put absolutely minimum effort into making the world of TROTT feel alive in any way whatsoever. Everything about this game is minimal effort - the only reason to buy it is if punishing difficulty itself feels rewarding to you. Otherwise - avoid this shit burger.

And I would like to top off and say that I would LOVE to be able to say something else with a straight face. A PC-exclusive old school shooter? It's a very enticing thought but the fact is that TROTT is a bad product, period.
That dog trailer made me think of what the dogs must have been feeling when they repeatedly tore my aorta out in Call of Duty 4.

You don't even like the way it plays? Do the graphics kill the gameplay for you? I ask because I've had that happen (not in this case though).

I think the game is fast, and extremely fun. And I wouldn't flat out say it's a bad product (maybe a bit prosaic), that's a little unfair to the devs I'd say. It might not be your cup of tea, and you might feel a bit burned for getting an arcadey shooter when you wanted or might have expected something a bit more high production, but it's not fair to shred the game to pieces because you don't like the graphics. After all, it didn't kill your puppy or get a bj from your wife.
Mjauv: This game has all kind of effects. Didn't you find "Advanced Options"->"Ludicrous" settings?
Kind of silly to give $14.99 and expecting graphics of games costing twice that.
Honestly, if you just want pretty graphics go watch a movie or push some buttons to some godawful AAA QTE title.
The rest of the game is ROTT, as it says on the tin, not that anyone seems to like that, as it seems here. I don't want AI which gangs up on me or waits until I reload to come out like in STALKER, they are just the receivers of all the rockets I have, just in 1994. I guess that happens when you bring out FPS gameplay from that era, it makes a lot of people irritated and angry :(
I haven't had so much fun in a long time. Very very very much enjoying playing ROTT 2013! :)

Ophelium: So I installed this and it overwrote RotT: Dark War. What gives?
Are you sure? The directory for Dark War is named "Rise of the Triad" and the directory for the reboot is named "THE Rise of the Triad." Probably only your desktop icon was overwritten, but you should still be able to access both games from the Start Menu (GOG.com).
So I tried the game, and I must say that if you like the old Rise of The Triad, you will like this one. They made almost everything like the original, so how not to like it? Besides, if you think the graphics or whatever is not okay, remember this is a budget title, which means it is not only cheap, it was developed by a smaller team with less money than your AAA (and "AA" or "A") titles. Anyway, I still play Doom, Heretic and this kind of stuff, so graphics and cosmetic stuff for me are secondary, really.

This is a MUCH better treatment than Shadow Warrior is getting with its remake, that in fact is not a remake, is a completely different stuff that only maintains the name Shadow Warrior.
This is much better than introducing elements of CoD, or other modern whatever-stuff-that-is-in-evidence too, like what happened with DNF.

Oh, and the soundtrack is awesome!
Ludicrous Gibs for you!

I tried to run Dark War from the Start Menu and it wouldn't come up. May have just happened to me, though.
While I won't buy the game - too modern for my GOG collection - I wouldn't mind being treated with that kind of animation on the front page anytime a new game is released - well done!

This game is great. It is possibly the most fun I've had playing a single-player shooter since the Build era, and is a step up from the original in many ways (especially, in my opinion, the much more interesting but no less batty level design). If you liked RotT, I think you'd be hard-pressed not to like this.

I am quite disappointed in the frame rate, though. I tried the .ini fix linked from the RotT forum with no luck. There must be something wrong here, which I really hope can either be reconfigured by me or fixed by Interceptor. As it is, my machine runs Crysis better than RotT. :/

For me, when I click on All Programs, there is a folder named GOG.com which contains folders for all the GOG games downloaded. Dark War is "Rise of the Triad" and the reboot is "The Rise of the Triad." The folders for both games have an icon similar to the desktop icon which can be clicked on to run the game.

oldschool: So before I go out and spend $15 dollars, how is the game? I'm still waiting on Age of Wonders 3. AoW 3 is an instabuy.
avatar
DalamarNL: Looking at the reviews on the gamepage it's really good if you're into 90's shooters.
AoW has been delayed until 2014, so no reason to save your money ;)
Thanks for the information, I did not know that it's (AoW3) release date had slipped. +1
