Falkenherz: In Din's Curse this doesn't work. There's no place where you are save. Monsters roam freely and will find you. They attack the town and create havoc, which you have to rectify before you can use the full functions of the town again. For some reason this really annoyed me, because I play ARPGs like casual games, as an afternoon distraction after work, where I can set my own pace.
There's a mod available on Soldak's page (well 'mod' - it's more of an official option as it's been released by Soldak) that prevents monsters from attacking town - use it if that's more your style?

Falkenherz: I can remember playing the demo of this game some years back. I totally love ARPGs and even played some of the bad ones. But I somehow felt uncomfortable with Din's Curse and quickly found the reason why.
In games like Diablo, Torchlight, Titan Quest, and so on, the world is static, meaning monsters will wait for you to attack them, and the town (hub) will always be a save haven where you can return anytime you want, trade, upgrade your character and equipment, or just stand around.

That said, I might give the game another try, if only just for the reason that it's on GOG and that I love these kind of games. Maybe someone of you has some more arguments to further convince me.
I found that by coordinating quests so they are all on the way helps out a LOT with keeping the monsters contained. Also, the more you explore a given floor, the better the chances that you'll end up solving a quest you haven't been given as you'll come across a machine or an elite monster and can destroy both without having a quest for it :D

tinyE: SIDE NOTE, since it was mentioned in comparison, am I the only one who found Dungeon Siege incredible for the first few hours and then repulsively boring for the last 10?
Yep, although I think it took me 17 hours just to get through the first mine. This happens to me a lot, I like RPGs when the party is small, and the more members join up the more tedious they get.

Beelzebubb: So, overall do you guys consider DoP or Curse better?
Why don't you try it and find out? I'm not being a sarcastic jerk, that was just a great segue to point out that Soldak is one of those VERY cool old school type companies that actually *gasp!* puts up very long and full featured demos for their games.

That's a really neat feature for them to (officially) support for people who don't like the more dynamic aspects of the game! Yet another reason to like Soldak.
I'm tempted to buy it now, but a bundle price would've been nice. Like 50% for the base game or 60% on both base and expansion.
Must be decent if its a Judas recommendation and IAmSinistar bought it :). will nab it later (probably better value than the games I got from my mutant promo roll :/)

I didn't know that. Thanks for the link. I might give the game another try now.

I was late to work once because of this game :)

"Why are you late?"

"ummm been playing Din's Curse all night..."

"..."

:D
Aaaaaaaand, broke.

I was planning to go one more round on the mutator's at some point, but this sounded like a pretty good game, and then when I saw Linux support ... money spent and I'm broke.

How awesome is it having a job where that's a totally valid excuse to be late. In fact, they probably promptly sat you down for a meeting to discuss whether and how to get it on GoG ;)

It's quite awesome but I still should be responsible enough to not let a game consume me :)

Might make a GOG mix out of this idea as there are quite a few GOG games that I played until the wee hours of the morning :D

That's awesome!
Looks like a game that has got core mechanics and ideas that would DESERVEe good tech & art whilst others who got both would NEED to have good core mechanics... :(
how does the multiplayer work? can you play co-op? is it only online on their servers or is there a LAN alternative?

IAmSinistar: Bit a shame to be known for just that now, after the other things I've done. I think I'd rather be known for my game rights research or promotion tracking, or even my Insomnia boosterism.
Or even for being a reformed 80's arcade game villain who now posts on GoG? :)

"I hunger!"

*reading glasses drop down onto Sinistar's face*

"...for knowledge!"
