misteryo: After browsing the news around, it seems this feature just rolled out over the last two days. So, they may have announced it in April of last year, but it does not seem to have been implemented until now.
The ads specifically or the "show tips" option?

Edit: Tutorial from March 2015. "Show tips" option available.

Oh! Interesting...

I meant just the ads are new. I didn't realize I was missing a feature!

Brasas: Other than the principle of the thing for those that like absolute control over their OS, does this carry any particular negative I'm missing?

Inappropriate / offensive ads I guess?

Seems to me very similar to what Google does every time I search something, and also for example what Amazon does to make Kindles cheaper...

Curious on other perspectives.
You do mean other than the theft of bandwidth and electricity, right? And not to mention another vector by which spammers can get up in your face. Anybody remember that stupid messaging service that used to be built into Windows?

I'd rather miss a lot of features... including DRM :P

I'm pretty sure that all falls under "control of the OS" yes.

So anything else?

I don't really think that falls under the control of OS, at least not in any reasonable fashion.

At any rate, I'm not sure why you seem to think that it's not a big deal.

omega64: Google and amazon handle websites/a browser (chrome).
Windows is an operating system, it should not have ads.
^This.

Imagine if you bought a service and were still inundated with flyers and spam mail

Simply shameless ad whoring.

misteryo: Same here. Perhaps the new ads--as well as the options to display or not--are a rolling update that has not reached all customers yet.
avatar
JMich: From what I recall, that functionality was first revealed in April of 2015. I've heard of slow updates, but that is ridiculous.

P.S. I do believe I know why I'm not getting said option, I just want to see the speculations others make.
Be honest... did you pirate Windows 10?
I don't have that strange new switch in the lockscreen settings. Even if I had it, it's no big deal. Have you ever seen ads for any platform that you could disable without forking out a lot of money? Windows 10 does suggestions right, building in for you toggles to enable or disable them at will. Anyone complaining about this better go back to Windows XP.

Gonchi: Be honest... did you pirate Windows 10?
Nope. Laptop had the OEM version of Win7, free upgrade offer to Win10 used.

Besides, why would one pirate Win10 before August of 2016? You'd just pirate Win7/Win8 and then use the free upgrade offer.

Someone I know tried, that doesn't turn it into a legit version of 10.
Anyone taking bets on when malware will slip through and be served up through the lock screen ad system?

I would not be surprised if it isn't long - blackhat hackers are probably already digging in to see how to do it..

I couldn't believe the rumors, so in august 2015 I intentionally installed a pirated W7 on a test laptop, then I upgraded to a genuine(legit) W10.
Then I formatted the disc and after that I clean-installed W10. Still genuine(legit)

So yea, mircosoft is that desperate.

Needs a better Windows 7/8 crack then. Unless you mean he didn't activate his pirated version.

Depends on how the ads are served I'd say. If it's like most ads (put files on a server, give link), then it won't take long, but if it's similar to how you get an app on the Windows Store (send the files to MS, MS checks them, then clears them for upload) it should take considerably longer.

Ads are not available in your region?
