nothing really new
microsoft announced this move last april already
they are only now making their move

the ads however are easy to disable

>Fortunately, the ads are easy enough to disable. Just head to Settings > Personalization > Lock Screen and uncheck the box that reads “Get fun facts, tips, tricks, and more on your lock screen.”<<

these ads are one of the ways microsoft plans to employ to make money on windows 10 being "free"

Fortunately, the ads are easy enough to disable...unfortunately, any update, system change, installation, uninstallation will happily turn this back on. Its a bit like whack a mole, get one scam, two more pop up.

Other than the principle of the thing for those that like absolute control over their OS, does this carry any particular negative I'm missing?

Inappropriate / offensive ads I guess?

Seems to me very similar to what Google does every time I search something, and also for example what Amazon does to make Kindles cheaper...

Curious on other perspectives.

Google and amazon handle websites/a browser (chrome).
Windows is an operating system, it should not have ads.

I wonder if there is any way to personalize those ads.
like playing a speed run video of Portal instead of ads.
The fact that they have the balls to do this is the more worrying thing

Last check was about 20 minutes ago it seems.

In the article they say:

"Keep in mind that the option to disable the ads only shows up if you have selected Picture or Slideshow under the Background section of lock screen settings. If you’re using Windows Spotlight, which routinely refreshes the lock screen with images from Bing, ads are presumably part of the deal."

Maybe that's why?
