MadalinStroe: The only other explanation I can think of, is that they just don't care, and assume that the software developers will modify their products to work around the phone's eccentricities.
That's exactly what will happen, because they want the market exposure that the iPhone ecosystem gives them.

Rixasha: Don't take for an Apple fanboy, I'm really not, but isn't this just a matter of video player software needing to take care to not display video on the partially obscured part while for instance the home screen wallpaper can extend further than it otherwise could?
I think so. Well, sort of. In the past, Apple has made it so developers don't have to worry too much about width/height of their apps when a new device has a different proportion, that it'll automatically flex or scale when appropriate. Of course, app developers should test and ensure that for their apps…

The resolution for iPhone X is 2436 x 1125 which is beyond 16:9, otherwise it would have been only 2000 x 1125. I would guess movies could fit centered without being obscured, and game developers can have about 400 extra pixels if they want them. So, the screen extending around the sides of the camera/sensors area doesn't really need to be an issue for current apps, especially if they are actively developed.
