Interesting thoughts:
Why is this one of the few games I have ever finished?
Is there a common thread between the finished games?
Does finishing or not finishing a game correlate to how much I enjoy the game?
Finished games include
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Arcanum
Deus Ex
Mass Effect
Oblivion (finished the main quest)
Factors contributing to finishing a game:
Length: 16-ish hours
Story: Mass Effect and Tomb Raider I wanted to see how the story ended. I didn't care about the story's end in any of the other games up there.
Mechanics: In a story game, there has to be enough variation and innovation mechanics-wise to keep my learning new things up to the end of the story. In Tomb Raider I found the parallel pacing done well. In Batman as well.
If a game is mostly about fun mechanics, like Deus Ex, I find no compelling reason to go through to the end. I'll just keep playing the earlier levels over and over, happily. With Oblivion, mods supplied that never-ending mechanical delight.
Tomb Raider had a good mix of main story/side missions, story/mechanics, action/puzzle, and open world/rails. I am not interested enough to go back to achieve 100% completion, nor to play the story again. But I sure enjoyed it start to finish.
