Sorry for the Throwback Thursday no-show last week! Today we're returning with a game that paved the way for some of the most beloved fantasy turn-based strategies.

Warlords I+II represent the best qualities of a classic turn-based strategy with role-playing elements. Set in the fantasy universe, you take a role of a leader of one of many fantasy factions, with the goal of conquering the land, vanquishing your enemies while searching for magical treasures and beasts. With loads of fun stuffed in both single and multiplayer modes, games from the Warlords series are still quite a challenge even for experienced gamers.

Let's see what one of our GOG teammates has to say about Warlords I+II and why it's a game he comes back to from time to time.

If there exists a classic strategy game that can compete with the Heroes of Might and Magic series in terms of hot-seat fun – it must be Warlords. And since I started my adventure with gaming on Amiga 600 in the early 90-ties, Warlords was actually the title to tackle if you wanted to play an exciting strategy game against your friends in a turn-based strategy duel.

The game has a classic fantasy setting, obviously inspired by Lord of the Rings books, and 8 playable factions, each with its unique units. Your mission is to conquer all cities on the map or at least pound enemies’ armies so hard they’ll sue for peace. What made Warlords stand out is the fact that you could recruit heroes to command your units. Heroes were also able to explore various ruins present on the map in search of treasures and monstrous allies that could join their army, giving every playthrough a classic RPG flavor.

The success of Warlords in 1990 paved the road for various sequels, including both turn-based and real-time strategies, most of them available on GOG.COM. The cool addition to Warlords II was a level editor that gave birth to a whole stream of fan-created content that you can admire in Warlords II Deluxe.

All in all, I highly recommend playing the Warlords series, especially if you love turn-based games and want to experience a huge dose of nostalgia!

Remember playing warlords (not sure which number, assume first) on Amiga way back. For its time it was quite a game! I even now have warlords installed on the iPad! Anyone know of any modern equivalents?

This is seriously good advice. I agree, people need to try completing the games they buy. Some of you guys act like you're gonna live forever. There's no use spending tons of money on games that you have no intention of ever finishing. Be thankful for what you have and enjoy it while you're still able to do so.
Warlords 3 was the pinnacle of this series. More refined version.

I always finish my games when I buy them, Problem is that games aren't that hard these days. The only game I am remotely looking forward to at the moment is Elden Ring. Nearly every new generation game is turning into a boring copy-paste version of classic games. Triple-A games nowadays have such a low difficulty that even a Game journalist can finish a game nowadays.

Problem is that I played most of the games that got released when I was younger. This newer generation of games barely interest me. I'm kinda hoping for some more Niche type of games that aren't walking simulators or copied and pasted art projects.
Warlords I+II are two of my favorite games from the past, it's nice to see them getting this attention.

Same, although I didn't have a chance to play Warlords I before it got released here. I spent a lot of nice evenings playing Warlords II on the other hand. It may appear simplistic compared to other strategy games (no technology, buildings etc.), but it has a reasonably good AI, very polished game play and that feeling of gradually moving ones's frontline while confronting strong opponents that kept my attention.
I think everyone interested in turn-based strategy games should give at least Warlords II Deluxe a try. If you search for a good game with a hot seat mode, Warlords II Deluxe will be a good choice. The rules are simple to understand and quickly to learn during the first turns. Also one strong point is the Warlords II Scenario Builder.

All games are great. But my favorite will always be Warlords 3: Reign of Heroes. The additional campaign and units of Darklords Rising are fun, but you lose the cutscenes that I very much enjoyed. And I prefer the soundtrack of RoH.

Having said that, W1-2 are still a lot of fun!
