Throwback Thursday Recommendation

We share the earnest reasons that make a classic game so dear to us!

Recommended by Michal, Content Marketing Specialist at GOG: If there exists a classic strategy game that can compete with the Heroes of Might and Magic series in terms of hot seat fun – it must be Warlords. And since I started my adventure with gaming on Amiga 600 in the early 90-ties, Warlords was actually the title to tackle if you wanted to play an exciting strategy game against your friends in a turn-based strategy duel.

The game has a classic fantasy setting, obviously inspired by Lord of the Rings books, and 8 playable factions, each with its unique units. Your mission is to conquer all cities on the map or at least pound enemies’ armies so hard they’ll sue for peace. What made Warlords stand out is the fact that you could recruit heroes to command your units. Heroes were also able to explore various ruins present on the map in search of treasures and monstrous allies that could join their army, giving every playthrough a classic RPG flavor.

The success of Warlords in 1990 paved the road for various sequels, including both turn-based and real-time strategies, most of them available on GOG.COM. The cool addition to Warlords II was a level editor that gave birth to a whole stream of fan-created content that you can admire in Warlords II Deluxe.

All in all, I highly recommend playing the Warlords series, especially if you love turn-based games and want to experience a huge dose of nostalgia!

5 stars based on nostalgia and memories

I can't review Warlords 2 in unbiased way, because this game was *so* good back then, I still simply love it and give it 5 stars automatically. And I don't play modern strategy games, but even if you are not a fanboy like me, and you just like turn based strategies, this should give you some fun. Premise is simple.. you have some map, represent one lord, control individual units (usually in group of eight) and fight over the control of all cities. There's bonus of having hero-class units which can pick up items or get quests and explore ruins, and there's some economy to keep an eye on and some diplomacy, but the core is about the exploring the map and winning all cities. There are some options to tune the final experience (fog of war, random map, active neutral cities, etc..), some of them turning the initial W2 experience quite some bit, if you are playing it a lot and want to have some new variation. I did play it recently in web browser in web-dosbox thing, and I still love it, but playing it in native dosbox with faster virtual HW should be even smoother and better.

Game that covers a lot of territory

Been on a Warlords kick recently, just prior to the GOG release. The Deluxe 2 version the old Macs never got (Warlords II only) and working in the DOSBOX just fine (including MAC) and I played many wonderful games, though I admit, I like editing the army and city Icons which can be done in a paint program such as Photoshop, Gimp or paint.net. FUN. If one just wants to conquer without a whole lot of city developing or tactical unit management, with lots of varied units across time on different battlefields with the ability to design one's own armies, maps and even worlds, Warlords II Deluxe is a good game to get. (FYI Warlords 1 DOS version is keyboard driven, the Old Mac version was more like Warlords 2 with the mouse. The Warlords I map is available in the release in Warlords II Deluxe with all its features including mouse control making Warlords I release more of a historical curiosity, but it includes a description of the original warring sides and their motivation.)

Same as Heroes of Might and Magic

I remember playing Warlords 1 hot seat on AMIGA with my childhood friend. I never had my own copy. Recently I thought that it would be nic if I can get in on gog. And so it happens. Decided to buy immediately. There are some nice addons to the game. Map (never saw it before) and manual (pdf scan of original with some nice artworks). I immediately launched W1 (nota bene - installer and game works on Windows XP). This game still has it - played for 2-3 hours was great fun. Graphics dated very well. If you are a fan of HoMM (especially HoMM 1-3) series and never played Warlords you should try it! Challenge - win a game with Sirians on warlord (100%) level.

Wow, I spent hours on Warlords

Honestly seeeing the game images it was a blast, Warlords was a great game back in the days and I spent counltess hours on it on the Amiga, I replayed it a lot of times and its an insta buy for me. Surely i guess actually the game may be a bit too simple as mechanics, there is not so much to develop but its an interesting game about exploration, blaance your army, defence and offence strategies. Honestly its a game that i played so much, like HOMM3, where you really cant stop going on with a next turn. There are a lot of special units and you can develop some strategies only when you have access to some of them, so the gameplay may change due to what units you have and where they are produced on the map. I never played Warlords 3 and im gonna pick both the 1 and 2 pack, and the number 3, I hope I will have enough time to play them. Thanks GOG about those gems for us good old players.

Great games!

So many fond memories of playing this in hot seat mode with friends! I mostly played Warlords I and wished there was a way to design your own units - which came in Warlords II Deluxe, but at that time I already moved to other games. Looking forward to play it again after all those years.
