The one who suggested you to open this I don't think read this forum very often because we have the same thread every week.

P1na: Is it unstable? Will it fall with those guys on top? Because I really want to get that happen, and I need to get my popcorn ready.
If we can get Gabe Newell on it, it will surely collapse.

ET3D: For trolling?

Besides, nobody hates GOG, right? Certain things, perhaps (forum search option definitely deserves some hate), but in general? Mild dislike at most, I'm sure.

P1na: ninja'd. And people hat stuff for no real reason all the time. I hate football, ham and dog shit on the road* , and while I have a (stupid) reason for hating that, I have no real reason to hate Dota 2 and still do.

*Despite that, don't get me wrong, I still like dogs themselves. They're tasty.
I don't like dota 2 because even when I play in single player against AI, once my connection hiccup, I get booted out of the game.

I prefer the warcraft version of dota because I don't need to be online, and if I don't like the new patch due to nerfs, I can customize my own experience.

cyberchief.979: Somebody on these forums suggested i should make this. Do you like GOG but hate Steam? Do you like Steam but hate GOG? Talk about it here. PS: Fanbois can post here. :)

timppu: You do realize this ploy isn't going to help you get free games in either service from other users, right?

By the way, do you hang around also on Steam forums, constantly begging for free games? Does it work there any better than here?
I'm not begging any more. This is my gift to you guys.

by that, do you mean those who use and like both services?
Well, I lost about 8 hours of play because my account wasn't properly logged into Steam due to a client file corruption. After I deleted and reinstalled everything but my library (cause I wasn't downloading 400GB of files again) it came back up, but due to where my saves were stored for this particular game and Steam cloud saving, I went from 35% back to 2% complete. Shame too. But I've since finished Shadow of Mordor and I'm glad I did... At least I was up to the very end.

I love GoG. But they don't carry most of the games I'm interested in. I love the old library and I have purchased MANY MANY games from my childhood. Steam is generally convenient and unobtrusive to me, so I buy most of the rest of my games as Steam Keys. I also have "DRM free" versions of most of those in case Steam does decide to say "Fuck you all" and shut down without patching their client to run the games completely offline. I think they would do that, or at least I hope they would (it can be done as that's how most cracks that crack Steam games work) but there are no guarantees where Gabe Newell is involved.

Overall, people who decry Valve and Steam as the evil to end all evils are only missing out themselves. Steam has its problems like anything else. Origin, for example is great except that they sell EA games. If that wasn't bad enough, that's ALL they sell. No use for Origin. Same for UPlay, except they sell Ubisoft games. Between the two of them, if they both went belly up tomorrow, I'd have a party. At least Steam is an open platform for and dev or pub who can get in (which is more than any other distributor), and their policies are consistent, if a little bit shitty. No refunds and if you own part of a bundle, you'll pay for it again without receiving extra copies unless they are Valve games because this has to be specified by the pubs who are like "give another copy in a bundle? HELL NO."

Personally I think a service more open like Steam with the customer support and policies of Origin would be pretty damn awesome.

In that case: thanks! This thread must be the best Christmas gift I've ever received, or will receive!

I hope to be able to return the favor at some point, e.g. a new thread about jews vs. muslims, or Kumpi vs. Kampi.

Let me return the favor .

I HATE steam with a burning passion. Despite that, i own a handful (not more) games there, for one (or more) of those reasons...

1) Retail games bought before 2010, and vendor/box never mentioned they are for steam; my fault, was tricked.
2) Games that do not exist outside steam anywhere else (exclusives), and i couldn't go about without playing them. Angry at myself for succumbing and buying.
3) Code redemption from retail games, which could be played on disk WITHOUT steam, but redeemed them just in case...
4) No2, or any other rare case i wanted/needed to get a steam exclusive game, and it happened to have a DLC or a compilation (Goty) version, which forced me to buy it in steam store.

All in all, i have 3 series in Steam. And i do not even play them regularly. I am a goglodyte. To the limits of being a fanboy of it. Yet, i love gog. And still, i do not like about it, these things:

1) Games being constantly removed.
2) On developers' orders, games from gog having content or features removed; thankfully, in comparison to steam, the "damage" and the magnitude of this habit, is quite smaller and less aggravating.
3) No more being able to access OLDER VERSIONS of one game, much like the games downloaded from old gog; please, just don't turn into steam, with those obligatory updates, please!

I own in gog 73 games including gifted ones. And i even bought games i already owned in physical, retail form. I consider the DRM-FREE a true BLESSING, and i even bought items that i never play, only to show my gratitude towards GoG, for bringing newer games in, and breaking steam and not only monopolies. For me, DRM-FREE, extra content, their wonderful support system (in comparison at least to the steam one that is abysmal and its employes do not even know their job or their games' and platform's aspects/faults/settings to help your with verious issues), and all this free digital content (in steam, even a mere soundtrack, is usually charged extra, for example), deserves a reward.

I won't bother bashing steam, or highlighting the reasons i hate it. I have already done this in the past various times. I do not need any further downvoting. And besides, people that use the service, will barge in, to counter everything, and suggest that with simply changing settings there, the problems disappear. Everyone is free to believe what he/she thinks is true. I use steam, i hate it so much, i think it insults my intelligence as a consumer. And i still bothered to buy like 10 games on it, in total. Imagine others who are not preoccupied, or even like it. That's why it is such a huge success. But i HATE it. And i love gog, instead. I refused to buy a certain game on steam for 6 euros, and bought it here for 30, mostly because it would be DRM-FREE, and i would support/reward gog, for making it possible to bring a brand new game here.

Both have good and bad points. My preference depends on how the particular services work out for me. In my one purchase Steam showed me a major disadvantage that trumps my nitpicks about gOg, so that's that and here I stay.

In the case of versus, I generalize it as the virtues of DRM-free vs convenience and catalog size.

timppu: Odd choice for a subject especially considering (s)he personally doesn't seem to care either way.
In a thread within the last couple days, one that was yet another round of griping about Steam, someone joked (?) that somebody should make a Megathread about how much Steam sucks, so all the anger could be vented in one place. This appears to be cyberchief's take on that suggestion.
Steam

Pros
Large Catalog of Games
Many sales

Cons
Trolls in Community
Scammers (Too many) and Cheaters
Really bad support
You don't really own your games there

GOG

Pros
Great Community
All games play on your system great (old or new)
Ability to get in touch with staff and a responsive support system
DRM-free

Cons
Limited selection compared to Steam

Ok. Back in 2007, a friend of mine from university, gifted me Halflife 2 and episode 1. I used to play it, and i really enjoyed it. He almost convinced me to buy the Orange Box, but i resisted! There was a period when i used steam, and even more dreadfully, even liked using it... Brrr...
^ that was sarcasm actually but eh
i dont like half life anyway

..platforming in a fps urgh
