BenKii: Anyone watch the "Short Trek" for Discovery that came on a few days ago? I thought the first one they released was pretty meh to me but then again I wasn't expecting much from a 15 minute episode.

Breja ought to love this episode, it's all about Tilly, his favorite character of all time. /sarcasm
I wish I could, but CBS is being difficult about the Short Trek episodes. I can watch the regular episodes on Netflix, and I'm sure the same will be true for Season 2 in January. But for some reason, they expect completely new negotiations and license agreements regarding what amounts to bonus content, effectively. -_-;

BTW, looking forward to season 2. The Klingon design appear to have been rolled back significantly (both makeup and ship designs), and I'm really curious about Christopher Pike. :)

I didn't know Netflix wasn't getting these Short Treks for international viewers. That really stinks but maybe it's just a timed exclusive and Netflix will get them later.

I'm also excited to see season 2. I'm hoping to see a return to some old school Trek. :)
Is it just me or does Spock look like a young Elrond?

With the beard and religious visions, I'm starting to wonder if it's not actually Sybok. At least it would make much more sense to have him have those visions, then introducing the idea of Spock having visions of angels. Then again this is Discovery, so they almost certainly won't do anything sensible.

Well, pretty much as expected, this was better than the premiere of the first season, while simultanously still being mostly crap.

1. The pacing is shit. The episode is over an hour long (becuase almost no one know anymore how to be efficient in storytelling), and yet for about 20 minutes nothing happens, and then suddenly it's like I'm watching the show at 2x speed. Everyone is talking super fast, the editing gets fast, things are flying fast, exploding and then... again slow and boring for the last 15 minutes. It's like the people behind this show have no idea how to build tension or tell a story.

2. Tilly is still the most annoying person in the history of fiction.

3. Because we're still obsessed with making Burnham be the greatest person ever, to make her look good we had to have a high ranking officer who for no reason acts like a brash idiot, disregards her advice, then disregards direct order from the captain and dies. No other purpose to him than making the point that everyone should always listen to Burnham.

4. Also to make Burnham look smarter than everyone, she actually has to remind Saru to use his superior eyesight, which he apparently now has. I guess his supersight doesn't work untill someone reminds him about it. Also despite having served among humans for years, Saru is confused by what a handshake is.

5. The way everyone talks super fast and over one another and the fast paced editing really make everyone look sort of hysterical in a crisis. I know they are desperate to make every scene be dramatic, but it's just ridiculous. When you compare it to the previous shows, you'll see how professional and focused everyone always was there, even in a crisis.

6. I hope everyone notice how this episode rips off the 2009 movie? The scene with the ship emerging from Warp into a debries field is almost identical, and the whole "freefall" scene is also extremely reminiscent of the freefall scene from that film.

7. So, Lorca is coming back, right? Sure, fine, whatever.

8. I keep hearing people talk about how this is the best looking Trek ever... no. Just no. There's more to a shows visul side than throwing money at it and having nice CGI. This show is so poorly shot it's not even funny. I'm serious - could you describe, or draw the Discovery's bridge? Because I can't. Do you feel like you know who's where and what they do? With the other shows I immediately felt familiar with the layout of almost every place on the ship. I could draw you the TOS bridge in my sleep, it's so efficiently designed and clearly shot.

Or what in the hell is this thing (see attached)? What is this guy wearing? It looks like he made himself a LaForge cosplay out of a disco ball. In fact, there seems to be a shitload of cheap looking cybernetic enchancements on Discovery.

9. Hey, the people on the bridge have names! I won't ermember any of them unless you also give them personalities and something to do, but still, what progress!

Available by now btw, they're not searchable but are available under Trailers & More in the Star Trek Discovery section.
Watched first half of Season 1 (im not biggest fan although i enjoyed old NG series). i feel Discovery is way too serious. Other chars aside from main one arent really fleshed out much. Klingon's are fugly (well yeah they usually are but in Discovery moreso haha)...lot of flash bang scifi... but plotwise?????

By the end a few chars do get fleshed out reasonable well I think though obviously Michael will always stay the main focus.

Plot... I'd suggest to keep watching for that. It definitely speeds up a ton here and there.

I think there's a good basis for a good series there and it's definitely heavily budgeted (or tech-ed I guess) compared to the older Treks. Honestly, if I watch the older Treks now the 1st season is always a bit difficult to watch with the usually overdone character introductions and the like which is difficult to rewatch. Hoping this one keeps going for 5+ seasons at least.

I honestly think it would be better if they had a much smaller budget. Maybe then they would have to focus more on writing a decent plot and characters, rather than flashy action and explosions, none of which they can even film well (choppy editing, pointless weird angles, poor lighting).

Eh, I'm not that critical of it personally but admittedly I'm easy to please. I don't think there's many characters I really considered well developed till a few seasons in (in other sci-fi's at least).
So is anyone still watching Discovery? The last episode of season 2 is this Thursday and thought I'd open the discussion back up about this show.

For me, this is the Burnham show. Everything centers around her character giving no other crew member a chance to shine. It makes great old character like Pike and Spock irrelevant and doesn't give us a chance to even get to know the lesser crew members. For example, they've showed off this android-looking character since season 1 but never explained why she's a robot or talked about her at all until

(SPOILER ALERT........)

they decide to run an episode in which they kill her off. Great character development everybody. *claps hands sarcastically*.
END OF SPOILER

Also, can anyone even name who the 2 helms officers' names are? No? That's what I thought. They need to get rid of Burnham and make this show about the entire crew of Discovery discovering new things in space and then we might get a better show.

Well, at least the Enterprise bridge stays true to the original while also updating it to look bigger and cooler.

(see attachment for bridge photo)

Those are my thoughts for now. What does everyone else think of season 2 so far?

I didn't finish the 1st season. I have better things to do than to watch this garbage and insult to Star Trek and Gene Roddenberry's legacy.

That's what I think of the STD to the Star Trek franchise.

But.. but... but... but diversity!

Seriously though, I had enough time wasted on Season 1. There are many shows that I still haven't watched, all of those better than Discovery and closer to Star Trek in every way.

I never watched Discovery, but I am currently struggling to watch Enterprise. I watched some of the episodes when I was in highschool, so for nostalgia reasons I wanted to see the entire series now since it is only 4 seasons. I grew up with Voyager and also watched TNG after Voyager and few episodes of TOS, and this Enterprise is such a massive letdown compared to all of that.

I just don't care about any of the characters, they have no depth, there is too much focus on Archer being some kind of action hero, it is very similar to TNG movies where they focused too much on Picard action. Trip is supposed to be some kind of engineer and third highest rank, but always gets in some trouble like he is an ensign or something. T'Pol actress did such a terrible job, she has one facial expression the whole time and usually just looks confused. Her whole character is just terrible, like every male crew member except Mayweather (or is it Mayflower, you see I don't know) had some weird sexual scene with her; being tied up, having a wet dream or those weird decontamination and massage scenes, it is uncomfortable to watch. And now in season three for no good reason she changes her outfit in every scene, it is so confusing. Also that intro song in season three got even more annoying.

Mayflower is also such a poor character, they made him too childish. At least Wesley was a prodigy and did some science stuff and was hanginf around Data and Geordi, but Mayweather is just doing nothing and he has the worst dialogue lines. About Hoshi all I know she is easy and Reed likes pineapples and has disagreement with parents, they are all just boring characters. The dog Porthos serves no purpose, at least Spot was there for Data to study emotional bonding and stuff.

My favorite character so far after 3 seasons is the blue guy with antennas, Shran. He has some Clint Eastwood vibe about him, and has some pride and honor, like he is some kind of Klingon actually. Doctor is OK too.

IMO all these prequel series shouldn't even exist, all they do is undermine the importance of the previous crews who were supposed to be some kind of pioneers. Now that whole concept is thrown out.

What do you think about Vulkan-Earth tensions in general? And Temporal Cold War? Those were my favourite parts of the Enterprise. I was quite disappointed that Voyager hadn't any similar long story arcs.
