ne_zavarj: I'm satisfied with Win7 i don't need a new OS .
People said that for XP, and guess what - those stupid people are all now on Windows 7.

Question is, will you still be that stupid when Windows 10 retail comes?

Windows 10 beats 7 anyday anytime.

Snickersnack: Wait to see if Windows 10 is a free license or a free year of subscription. Win 10 might end up being very nice but I wouldn't burn a Win 7/ 8 license for a subscription trial.
Free forever.

According to this, they've clarified that the upgrade to Win10 will be permanent, and the offer to get it for free will last 1 year. The OS itself will not follow a suscription model.

*raises hand* I intend to stay "stupid", thank you.

Really, because I still see lots of "stupid" people on XP.

Ric1987: So what happened to Win 9 anyway?
I believe it was bundled for a short time with Leisure Suit Larry 4: The Missing Floppies.
Currently running Win7 SP1 on another SSD. If they give me free beer with no strings attached I'm not going to turn them down.

I hope we can turn off Cortana though. I can see this feature become like Clippy rather fast.

Still using WinXP for games (migrated to Linux for the rest though).
Windows XP can still be handy for loading older applications that do not function at all under Vista or later (by creating a virtual machine of course). Especially 16-bit applications that do not function under 64-bit versions of Windows.

As for applications that only work well Windows 98 or under (excluded ME), one nifty way to play around with those OSes is grab specially made DOSBox builds that allow getting Windows 95/98 to work (though no build is currently stable enough to prevent all crashes due to page-faulting issues). One nice perk to some builds or using certain patches is Voodoo emulation. :D

Of course, there is PCem to play around with as another emulator to run Windows 98 or earlier. Bochs is nice, but properly emulating it is extremely slow (at least from experience with it). Though, it seems to have improved in performance since the last time I have used it, it is still extremely slow as stated.

Microsoft Virtual PC 2007/2004 seems fine and dandy (at least it did install Windows 98 or earlier fast), but it is missing things. MIDI emulation is rather terrible and graphics capabilities may not even be all there. There are few games that have issues even on Windows XP, which is why I have mentioned about Windows 98 or earlier for such games. Good example is Mechwarrior 2 (Main client doesn't work at all while NetMech works, but glitchy as heck due to some odd synchronization issues). Of course, one could play with Mech2VM. However, we have the Pentium edition which doesn't work right.

Anyhow, that is all I have to say in terms of emulation/virtualization (included both terms as they each function differently, but can achieve similar goals).

Stay stupid after games moving to new DirectX that 7 won't be able to support?

Of course stupid. They're contributing to malware problems as a whole.

If you're only playing old games, then it's good to be stupid.

I don't even see new games supporting XP anymore.

BoxOfSnoo: 5 euro per year is a fair price to you? That's... oh my.

Right now Windows 7 or 8.1 is something like $120 or so. For a single OEM version. $10 per MONTH, if you want to pay it off in a single year. You think 42 cents euro per month is fair for that amount of code? If so, I don't think there's a software company on the planet that actually wants you as a customer.

Don't worry, I get the sentiment. I won't get Spotify because I judge $10/month is too expensive for me. (I do happily spend on Netflix, though). Maybe Windows isn't worth anything to you and you could easily switch to Linux. I encourage that! But that's just not a reasonable or sustainable price.

hedwards: Most people don't though, it's more typical to use a copy of windows for 2-3 years minimum for most people. And it tends to be bundled with hardware so most people have no idea how much they're spending.

But, even if you do buy a new copy every time that MS releases a new major version, that's still probably 2-4 years minimum in most cases. Excluding that long gap that Vista left.
Which is my thought for a $30 annual fee. 4 years and you basically pay for a new license, and if they release a new version in that time, you basically get that version for less.
If it will be free for 1 year I think will be worth to try it. And yes, it is official will be free for W 7 / 8 users.

I think it is a smart move from MS because that way they might recover some market share lost by competition.

You'd be surprised. All new games I'm interested in support WinXP (and most of them Linux too).
I couldn't care less for expensive flashy AAA games with DRM, a ton of DLCs and more movie than gameplay, my PC couldn't handle them either way.

Regarding this update:

Deadlock: The first year, the OS is free, then you start paying a fee to use the OS. Want to keep using Windows 10? You need to connect each 30 days to the Internet to "verify" your are running a "genuine" copy of Windows... Want a patch? Pay, pay pay.

No rollback: You need to know that you cannot restore the old version of Windows once the update to Windows 10 has been installed (but you can restore a backup).

We do not know this for sure yet, just mere speculations and rumours on the 'net, but knowing the business models, this could be pretty accurate. Once you upgrade, you have 1 year of free patches, upgrades and what not and then... mwhaha!

Oooh, that's tempting. I'll have to decide if my retail Win 8 Pro license is worth hanging onto for a future retro gaming box.
