You get a lightsaber!

Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, in which you master weapons of the Jedi and face the very real temptations of the dark side, is now available for Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 20% launch discount.

Dark Forces revolutionised the early days of first person shooting. Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II improved on the experience in almost every imaginable regard, as the series once again established a significant milestone in 3D action gaming. If the words "You get a lightsaber" weren't enough to get you hyped about this title back in the day, then the truly-3D environments and models, RPG elements, and unprecedented freedom of movement complemented by a varied arsenal of weapons and Force powers would have done it.

Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II is a must-play for gamers looking to experience or relive gaming history, and the GOG.com treatment now makes this easier than ever. At the end of the day, it's a game that allows you to discover the Force entirely on your own - to walk the light path of a Jedi hero, or to unlock the sheer destructive power of the dark side - and that is just plain awesome.

Get your lightsaber and master the Force in Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 20% launch discount will last for 72 hours, until Friday, January 30 at 1:59 PM GMT.

dudalb: The GOG release of Jedi Knight is a total embarrassment...to Steam.
GOG's got everything right, Steam managed to mess up almost everything. They did not even bother to include the music.
I just removed the Steam versions of Jedi Knight and Mystereis of the Sith and will not be downloading them again.
In all fairness, I doubt that Steam has anything to do with their Jedi Knight version. They just happen to not have GOG's policy on releasing games. Aside from the DRM-free aspect, Steam doesn't guarantee that the games they sell will work flawlessly on most current configurations (they still have Max Payne, for example, with only french language, and buggy as hell on many configurations). I'm pretty sure that in many cases, and especially with their LucasArts titles at the time, many old games are just sold as they are. In my point of view, LucasArts was the one to blame at that time for their lack of support.
I finally got Jedi Knight to work on my machine! I reinstalled it again, and then I created a shortcut directly to the JK.EXE file and added " -windowgui -displayconfig" to the end of the path and now it works!

Curunauth: Looks like it'll soon be time to marathon the DF series again . . . I shall now impatiently await the best saber-combat sim of all time, aka Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. (And Academy is good too.)

tinyE: In Academy you get the sabre right away and I always thought the kill moves were a little nicer in Academy.
Academy always felt a bit more button-mashy to me, with so many ways to launch into a variety of whirlwind combos. It had more tougher regular saber-wielding enemies, but the strongest tended to be weak to particular attack techniques, resulting in somewhat samey combat toward the endgame. I may have some nostalgia talking, but I feel like JKII:JO had more fights where I was actually dueling (ie, choosing my approach and strikes specifically in response to the enemy's actions), even though it had less overall Jedi focus.

The best duels outside of multiplayer were probably in the big mirror-floor room at the end of the demo level though - it was fun to spawn in bosses or high-level reborn and practice against them there, honing dueling technique or learning to land power finishers, particularly that twichy and context-sensitive Medium stance Skywalker flip. :-)
And beat the game again. :) Guess what I did all day? =P Anyway, I just played through the first level of MotS and was greeted by some prerecorded game engine cutscenes. My god, those look horrible! Also, where JK was b-movie quality stuff this is even lower. I wonder why they felt the need to change the voices of the stormtroopers. As it is almost everything about the voice acting screams amateur hour. Oh well, at least the gameplay is still good, and I see a bit more varied force powers in future game sessions.

Giving cheese?
Could some of you Windows users check if the JK desktop shortcut points to jk.exe or goglauncher.exe?
I'm wondering which should be used to launch the game & what does goglauncher.exe do?
Sorry I haven't played GOGs on Windows in a while..

I'm not sure about goglauncher.exe, other than the fact that the desktop shortcut points to it. I would normally assume that it contains the GOG fixes to music, hw acceleration and fullscreen movies, but a direct shortcut to JK.exe does them equally fine, at least for me.

princey1205: I'm hitting a small snag, if I run the game WITH hardware acceleration on I can see everything bar the HUD, without I get a black screen with a small almost static effect in the top left hand corner of the screen (very similar issue with Rogue Squadron's main menu)

Any clues as to why I don't have a HUD or Crosshairs?
(I'll check back later as I'm off to work now so I can buy more GOG's :) )
Hardware acceleration has issues with Windows 8/8.1 so if you're running the game on that particular OS that might be the root cause. If you're running JK2 on any version of Windows EXCEPT 8 and you're experiencing issues, please file a Support ticket with screenshots and your DxDIag :) If you want, you can just give us links to the screens so you don't have to attach a whole bunch of files :)

Auto-aiming is enabled and crosshairs are disabled by default. You can change this configuration from the options.

Well, to be technical, this thread is about Jedi Knight 1, which is also Dark Forces 2. Blame Lucas.

You're right, that's very confusing. xD
What do you say we just start a 'Jedi' thread. It will serve two purposes:

1) allow a place for ALL Jedi related questions regardless of game.

2) give fair warning to noobs that this forum is infested with dorks like myself and some of you. :D
