You get a lightsaber!

Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, in which you master weapons of the Jedi and face the very real temptations of the dark side, is now available for Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 20% launch discount.

Dark Forces revolutionised the early days of first person shooting. Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II improved on the experience in almost every imaginable regard, as the series once again established a significant milestone in 3D action gaming. If the words "You get a lightsaber" weren't enough to get you hyped about this title back in the day, then the truly-3D environments and models, RPG elements, and unprecedented freedom of movement complemented by a varied arsenal of weapons and Force powers would have done it.

Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II is a must-play for gamers looking to experience or relive gaming history, and the GOG.com treatment now makes this easier than ever. At the end of the day, it's a game that allows you to discover the Force entirely on your own - to walk the light path of a Jedi hero, or to unlock the sheer destructive power of the dark side - and that is just plain awesome.

Get your lightsaber and master the Force in Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 20% launch discount will last for 72 hours, until Friday, January 30 at 1:59 PM GMT.

There is your problem.

However, fear not, because there is always a bit of hope:

Magnitus: And given that the gameplay of Outcast + Academy was so great and polished, I'm guessing that whichever changes they made compared to prior instalments were unequivocally for the better.
avatar
Fenixp: They don't allow you to handle the sword in first person in Outcast + Academy. A personal pet peeve of mine, of course it's more efficiend in 3rd person anyway, I just prefer 1st.
I remember playing Outcast with the saber in first person the first time, there should be an option that disables the auto-switch.

Grargar: Well, the image emphasizes the words Jedi Knight over the words Dark Forces II. Plus, the official title is Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. Needless to say, it's confusing.
In Germany it was called Jedi Knight only. The reason is, that the original Dark Forces was "indexed" (banned from public sale). So they removed any reference to the first game from the second.
And it gets more confusing!

Dark Forces
Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II
Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast

Logically the next should be

Jedi Academy: Jedi Outcast II

.. but it's not. :D

It could have been worse, just imagine the next one is "Dark Forces: Jedi Academy II"; we could have created a rip in the space-time continuum
Unbelievable release! Thank you, GOG! <3
*waiting patiently for a sale*

You, sir, are truly a Jedi Master. It works, it wooooorks !

Ow, the game has gone awful with the age, tough for its graphics. But the gameplay is still here, I remember every corner of the first map. Thank you again for poiting me the good tips.

As a horror fan I'll take Dromund Kaas over any recent clone of Amnesia or Slender :) Even with (very) aged graphics.

You're welcome :)

But ... if you don't like the old school graphics, why don't you install Jedi Knight Enhached and Texture Mod? :)

Magnitus: Well, I'm guessing it's not just the graphics that feel more dated ;).

If I played the Jedi Knight series for the story, I might have felt more tempted to visit prior instalments, but the story of Outcast and Academy were never noteworthy for me (just an excuse to navigate through some great levels and lay foes low with force and lightsaber), the gameplay was.

And given that the gameplay of Outcast + Academy was so great and polished, I'm guessing that whichever changes they made compared to prior instalments were unequivocally for the better.
The lightsaber is only a bit fancier than a standard melee weapon in JKI (beyond the shot blocking, that is); the detailed strike control and dueling mechanics were introduced in Outcast. The JKI bosses are dark jedi, but while sabers are involved, they're closer to traditional bossfights than proper saber duels (to be fair, a few of the bosses in Outcast are sufficiently powers-happy that bossfight tactics play much more of a role than fencing, but high-level reborn can always be played as fun fencing challenges).

All that said, JKI and even dark forces 1 are quite fun, and properly Star-Wars-y. They have enjoyable mechanics for what they are, but they aren't lightsaber sims first and foremost, unlike Outcast and Academy.

I wonder if GOG will get the later Jedi Knight games.

This feels like a certainty.
But I wonder how many months we'll have to wait...
