idbeholdME: Nice, but not really interested in going through 15 hours of MP40 going PLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPL RHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRH PFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPFPLRHPF....
again.

No reason to ever bring out anything else because of the infinite ammo. Well, you can carry one launcher weapon with limited ammo... Wolf 3D gets a pass, but in 1994, after Doom even, gameplay this monotonous is not really engaging.

I finished it once and have honestly no desire to ever play again.
Some times dual pistols is better to stun enemies with other sounds... But yes, this is very specific shooter. Not for all.

The level design is also more of a corridor/maze like (like some forum members mentioned Wolfenstein 3D above are totally correct) and all look almost the same or at least very similar... With some exceptions. But yeah, some will find it boring, samey... But the game has it's charm.

The game did in fact start as a sequel to Wolfenstein 3D, you can see some of the original design documents and graphics here:

Good release from Nightdive, as usual - instabuy :)
Looks like a good console version to me, running on kex engine with expected stuff like gamepad support etc. Dunno about the content compatibility between the original and kex though, esp. if that total conversion mod is a standalone entry ran through gzdoom.

Surprise extra points for leaving the original version alone. I have a soft spot for it, probably because of the wolf3d pedigree, sprites, music, doge and the excalibat. Although the level textures were always quite drab and uninspiring imo. A brown game way before all games became brown in mid 2000s.

park_84: Yes, it's that game, although I'd rather call it a Wolf3D-like game.
Ah yes, you couldn't look up / down etc.? Now I recall more, it indeed seemed closer to Doom engine or something, rather than Duke3D...

I guess I can revive my memories by playing it now (I have all the three ROTT games now on GOG). Back in the day I gave it a pass, somehow its platform jumping and coin collecting stuff didn't please me back in the 90s when I was hoping more of kick-ass shooter action like in Doom 1-2 or Duke3D.

Wolf3D's main limitations are that all walls must be on a grid of right angles, and that it cannot handle floors and ceilings of different heights, they must all be on the same plane.

RooT tries to hide the latter, on the one hand by adding scrolling textures for the skybox, and on the other by allowing jumping and climbing on sprites, simulating heights by making one sprite stand on another.
It kind of works but, well, the limitations are still there and it does hamper the gameplay, it's way better than Wolfenstein but it's definitely not Doom or Duke.

The MP40 has a higher rate of fire, so it was still better at locking down enemies than the dual pistols. The moment you find the first MP40, the rest of the game is spent holding down the fire button with it, occasionally mixing in a couple shots from a launcher weapon before you run out and it's back to MP40.

This game gave me enough MP40 to last for a life time.

Yeah, charging 20€ for a game that's almost 30 years old can only be called ludicrous.

Doesn't it run in DosBox by default? At least if I remember correctly. It worked fine right after installing for me at least.

Or is there any reason why you'd want to use staging?

First, greatly improved support for Gravis Ultrasound, which is generally regarded as the best sound and music quality for Rise of the Triad: Dark War.

Second, the original Dosbox that comes with GOG releases of DOS games is very old and slow. If you're playing not only Rise of the Triad, but many other DOS games, you'll have the added benefit of being able to play those games with greatly improved CPU-emulation speed. For example: https://dosbox-staging.github.io/downloads/release-notes/0.75.0/#64-bit-dynamic-recompilation-svn.

Gudadantza: Interesting, This version also comes with a gzdoom total conversion mod called "Return of the Triad", never heard about it before.
It was made by the dev of AMID EVIL back in 2011.

Mafwek: Released exactly 10 years after the remake? Was this intentional?
Yes it was.

PaterAlf: Even if there are improvements and a new level, I don't feel like paying for the same game a third time.
It's not just "a new level". It's a new episode with 23 levels.

A while ago I was playing the original and I found a bug that prevented me from beating the final boss, a timing issue that made that fight impossible.
The thing is, I discovered that bug because I was frustrated with that fight, so I watched a walkthrough on YouTube and found out that my game wasn't doing what it was supposed to be doing, it was broken. Also, if I could have beaten that boss, I wouldn't have thought anything of it, just that it was a difficult fight, so who knows if I went through some other anomaly while playing and didn't realise it.

This happened on Linux and I can't remember which version of DOSbox, then I moved my saved game to another computer running on Windows and another version of DOSbox, and there I was able to finish the game easily.

I say this in case anyone finds anything strange while playing a DOSbox game, be aware that there may be problems like this.
