Chess-like strategy, a puzzle of war.

Massive Assault and Massive Assault: Phantom Renaissance, two games of turn-based tactics and deception from the creators of World of Tanks, available now on Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 50% launch discount!

Massive Assault is, first and foremost, pure strategy. While it may look like your regular RTS, the Massive Assault series is a game of precise turn-based tactics across hexified battlefields. Your success will not depend on your reaction time or clicks per minute, you will never go into battle uncertain of its outcome. Everything is consistent and laid out on the table from the start - it's your job to make the most of these few rules to deceive and outmaneuver your opponents. The series has been described as a chess-like strategy, a puzzle of war.

Massive Assault: Phantom Renaissance (aka: Domination) is an all-around improvement on the first game and a continuation of the story - it includes an expanded single-player campaign with greater tactical options, more units with better AI, and a much more graphically spectacular war to behold.

Outsmart and deceive your enemies in Massive Assault and Massive Assault: Phantom Renaissance, now on GOG.com! The 50% launch discount for both titles will last for one week, until Tuesday, February 10 at 10:59 AM GMT.

opeter2: The MA series is somehow similar to Warlords series, where every next version was an evolution, so that mean, that they were bit "better" the the older ones, with more options, units, upgrades, tech-tree, better graphics, etc.
I take it you didn't play Warlords 4 then ? Lucky you.
More fun for the Battle Isle fans, looks like. Do you get to play both sides in the games? And do they have tech trees and/or combat experience for improving individual units?

JudasIscariot: They're single player everywhere you look :)

Grargar: Oh OK. The way you said it, it implied that the developer/publisher, for some reason, didn't give you serials.
No, nothing like that :) Let's not jump to conclusions :)
Turn-based strategy games... god damn it. I never know beforehand if I will find them a pleasant or an infuriating experience, usually regarding their difficulty level.

I like a good challenge with my games, but with turn-based tactical games, it quite often turns into "make mental calculations all the time how many steps exactly you should make so that you get to shoot first when you and the enemy unit get into firing distance...". That's what e.g. M.A.X. started to feel to me, I haven't touched the game for a year.

Then again, Gorky 17 was a more pleasant experience, maybe it was easier too. Sure I counted the steps somewhat in it too, but the grids had so few (big) squares that you didn't have to count much, and the game was otherwise also quite forgiving if you miscalculated. The "calculation game" was rather simple in it, if it seemed you won't have enough action points to shoot after moving, then move one square less, and use the remaining action point for guard (which will diminish any damage from the enemy, when he shoots at you on the next round).

Maybe that is one of the reasons I prefer RTS games, the game flows all the time and no such calculations are needed.

any difficulty levels available on these games ... or just one option? Thanks!
I've never heard of this series before. Is it like Battle Worlds Kronos?

Matruchus: Nice release. Definitely one for my wishlist. A very hard turn based game if I remember correctly.

Also when did Wargaming.net acquire the IP for this? I thought Slitherine owned this.

Lord_Kane: As far as I remember Wargaming has always owned massive assault.
wish Slitherine was onboard GOG :/

From the little I saw/read about it, it reminds me of Kronos & the good old Battle Isle.

What is the difference between Massive Assault and Massive Assault: Phantom Renaissance?
Nice release! More TBS onboard..

CarrionCrow was kind enough to gift me the first one to try out, so as no one else seems to have played them I'll answer.

Kind of, and no.
Most of the campaigns and scenarios seem to be from one side (the good guys I think) but there are a few from the other perspective. But both sides are identical other than names and appearance so it doesn't make much difference.
There's no base building, researching or upgrading units.
You just capture territories which then provide resources which you can spend on units or save to buy bigger units (or more units at once) later.

There are three difficulty levels, not sure what effect they have though... Not sure if it's just the AI's skill or if they get resource bonuses or more units or something.

I always thought RTS & TBS to be like cRPG & aRPG (if it makes any sense the term). Like in a classic cRPG where the game needs your time and adhesion while an aRPG needs only your time because it's just a clickfest (OK not all ARPGs but you get the point ;-) ), I find it the same to be in TBS & RTS; the one needs a lot of your time and your logic/planning ahead skill (if there is such thing) and the other is better suited to quick "massive assaults" (to use today's release name!) and multitasking.

I like them both, depending on the mood. :-)

Unless I'm mistaken Matrix/Slitherine only joined Steam a year ago or so, so GOG might very well be on the horizon for them.

I had the same question! It's just the original game & it's standalone sequel!
@adaliabooks.. thanks for the response... I will pick up one or both this evening!
