Higurashi When They Cry Chapters 1-5 (25% off): Spawning a popular anime and manga series, Higurashi is a "sound novel", where meticulously designed audio plays a crucial part in these unique stories. Chapters 1-5 are available today, with Chapter 6 slated for release in the near future.

Not really into visual novels, but hey GOG congratulations for listening to your users & making a great move! Let's hope even more developers (not only visual-novel ones) get onboard.

PS. I don't know why, but "inspiration" just hit me, so I will also dedicate this little -edited- chorus to you (which you have to read aloud the "Offspring" way):

Desmight: "Let's sell it, someone's gonna like it" is what brought shovelware to Steam. And that's the main reason I don't support Steam anymore, it's even more important than DRM for me.
But that is not the case here. People actively asked for them and obviously there were a lot of them. I agree: Steam is basically selling EVERYTHING because they simply don't have any curation at all. Broken games? No problem - at least not Valve's problem. Broken games remain quite a few here on GOG and the only reason they are still broken (like i.e. Perception) is that the devs don't update them and GOG has a hard time getting them to do so. BUT at least they are trying and that still is a big difference. I don't think that there's really any need to worry. I am pretty sure that GOG will still curate their games - they only added one additional genre (which they already had on the store with Hatoful Boyfriend and its successor). I really doubt you will now see "games" like "under the blanket" or "shower with your dad" which I would consider to be shovelware.

Desmight: What bothers me is that they put time and effort to perform this marketing stunt (even going against their own past curation system) instead of getting DRM-free releases of actual games. I mean, we still don't know if Bioshock is ever going to land here, or if Metro Exodus will be available on GOG on release, or if we'll ever see Dark Souls, or Sleeping Dogs, or Skyrim, or Dead Rising, or stuff like the Zeno Clash series, or whatever. But yeah, let's all rejoice for GOG becoming another indie shovelware platform who allows everything on the shelf (once you accept visual novels and dating sims, you accept everything). I know, I'm being rude, but it just makes me angry that they really put all this effort to bring VNs here, when there are real games still waiting and games who got rejected because they weren't useful for marketing purposes.
The thing is, if this helps GOG to increase their market share and profits, then it might actually make it easier to bring other, non-VN games here.

My impression of sound based games had been soured when I tried A Blind Legend on my phone based on rave reviews and found a game with very basic mechanics. Not only that but upon trying the game after some time had passed and my memory of it had become fuzzy, I had bungled up the very basic act of trying to access a gesture based menu system.

tibs210: As a fan of the visual novel genre I just want to say a thank you to GOG for implementing it. Granted, like a lot of game genres their's a lot, and I do mean A LOT of trash out their, and even more crappy H-VN games, but their's some damn fine stories out their too. It's a genre that's always been a guilty pleasure of mine, and I look forward to seeing more of these titles come to the platform.

That being said, I do have a request. It's not for a game, but for three tags specifically for this new (to this platform) genre. Would you kindly add the following genre tags:
1) Non-Kinetic = This is the type of visual novel that actually has some gameplay, whether it be just picking A or B, or something more deeper. This can be anything from the current "Sunrider Academy" or something like Danganronpa.
2) Kinetic = This is the opposite of the Non-Kinetic genre. These are purely linear, and don't have any gameplay at all bar the button press to continue the story. This is personally a genre I don't play, and as such don't have many examples that immediatly come to mind. I think "eden*" would be such a game.
3) H-Game = This is just straight up porn. It could either be Kinetic or Non-Kinetic, but the acual purpose is just for masterbation, whether it panders to the male or female audience. It's less interested in telling an interesting story, and more intent on delivering fan-service, and often include over-the-top sexual content. This sub-genre is way too big, and is often what people think of when people think of VNs, often giving the genre a bad name.
I would love that, make a wishlist thread and I will vote for that.

Nope, not true. There are at least a few Hentai VNs that do have more gameplay than making a few choices.
