Ys VI returns to PC.

Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, an English-language Windows premiere, is available for pre-order now, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 15% discount!

Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim becomes available on PC, in English, for the very first time ever. Ys is an action-jRPG series where your thumbs, combat, and platforming skills will all be tested - the series' focus on keeping combat fast, fluid and enjoyable is as clear as ever. Though the game premiered on PSP and PS2 several years ago, this release can easily be considered the "definitive" edition with a brand new translation, true widescreen support, updated mechanics (including better checkpoints), and support for modern controllers. If you think you've got what it takes - the aptly named Catastrophe Mode may just you be your next challenge. The future of Ys is bright for PC gamers!

Pre-order Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, DRM-free on GOG.com! The game is expected to launch on Tuesday, April 28.

MIK0: You may be right about the translation, but the new feature was introduced in Felghana and Origin as well so that should not be the reason for a higher price.
avatar
tootbrush: Nah, those features were already in the original Falcom releases of Felghana and Origin. Catastrophe Mode and warping to checkpoints were added to Napishtim by XSEED. They weren't in the original.
avatar
MIK0: Regarding the translation, I wonder why it was retranslated and why in the thread is mentioned the ps2 port. The game is the pc game and already had a fan translation that solved the issue. XSEED already used, to my knowledge, a licensed translation from the person who actually did almost all the translation for the ys games so far (he also translated part of trail in the sky for them). Maybe it's because for Napishtim the fan translation was done by another translator and they didn't get in contact with him about that, but I remember a translation by the above translator was done back in the day and never released so if XSEED is still in contact with him, it would have been more convenient to ask him again. For consistency.

tootbrush: *shrug* Maybe it was simply the best option. Over on the XSEED forums Tom (their localisation specialist and avid Falcom fan) said the new translation is by the same guy who translated Ys: Memories of Celceta and that the result is good. I wouldn't worry about it.

Speaking of Memories of Celceta, that's the Ys IV remake you people are asking for here. Unfortunately it's only available on Vita right now.
Ys V doesn't have a remake yet. They will likely start work on it after Ys VIII is done.
I would love to have Celceta on PC, on Vita some areas look terrible and the framerate turns to shit if/when you zoom in.

That's what I'm saying. Nothing new to justify the higher price.

Probably. I was not arguing about quality as I have yet to see the new translation. I ask just out of curiosity and a little concern about possible change (some translator like to add too much personal taste to the adaptation).

Sure, I probably forgot to mention it. I really like to get the missing part of Adol adventures on pc and this time we don't have a pc version as a base. However I preferred the artstyle of the first two Ys (that got a faithful remake because they were Falcom first party game) or the later pc games, not the one on handheld.

They're new as in they're things added by XSEED themselves. It's additional development on a scale they haven't done on any of the Ys games yet.

And as I said in the first post, Ys Origin launched at the same price. And actually now that I look at it, it still has the same price.
The reason we won't see Memories of Celceta or 7 on PC is because there aren't PC versions of those games. XSeeD doesn't have the staff or knowhow to actually do a port themselves.
Too many games to buy, decisions, decisions, decisions.....
I have yet to get any Ys games, but mark my words, Gotta catch em all ^_^

Bought! :)

This series presence is too valuable on PC, and even more valuable on GOG!

I hope the rest of the series gets here too!
Great JRPG :D

deshadow52: Okay so we have Ys I & II, Ys Origins and now Ys VI. How is one supposed to play a series where all the games are all over the place. Where is III, IV, V and all the the others that may exist? Can't play I and II and then skip to VI. I know III is on the SNES, but where every other game is I have no clue.
We are missing IV, V and VII

We have the remake of III in The Oath in Felghana. Seven is also on PC but its chinese only. However Memories of Celceta which is a remake of Seven should be coming to PC soon.

So that leaves IV and V... i have no idea if those are in the works.

For the most part, Ys games are stand alone.
Generally you want to start with either Ys 1+2 (2 takes place immediately after Ys 1 and concludes its story) or Ys 3: Oath in Felghana.

Ys 1+2's combat is 'archaic' but simple, if you're OK with ye olde 80s PC unorthodox combat system then by all means start with it! It should also come with 3 soundtrack options: Chronicles (uses guitars and real instruments), Original NEC PC music, or Eternal which is video game synth style.

Alt. you can start with 3 which is more of an Action RPG with a simple but fun combat system.
Hell this is OiF's combat in a nutshell

Also the soundtrack is fantastic and boss fights are challenging.

From there you can play Origin and 6 as they play similar to OiF.

Celceta is a Ys IV remake and Ys V doesn't have a remake... yet.
Why not, may as well finish my Ys collection here and continue to show support for the publisher bringing their games here DRM-free. Ordered!
played ys on various formats over the year but this looks really nice

a pre order for me :)

Oh I played Ys I & II briefly on Wii as they had the Turbograhpx/PC-Engine CD version on there. Didn't give it much of a chance, but would give it another go on PC since it's nice and updated. I also played Ys III for Snes for about five minutes if that counts. That's really all I know. I will give them all a try someday.
