vanchann: So GOG has been implementing new features:

- Library built around a heavy loaded client that is a really bad backup downloader.

IronArcturus: This is all too true. Many are being hit by the Galaxy-DRM from GOG. In the case of Necrodancer, if the game thinks Galaxy is installed on a computer, even if it's not listed in the Registry or Services, the game will not launch at all. This is proved in the logs which list "GoG: Initializing galaxy API."

I've sent messages to Support asking them if there was a way to get the game to not load or detect Galaxy, and they said it wasn't possible. They won't even tell the game devs to create a Windows version that doesn't need Galaxy. Support kept telling me to "install the Galaxy Client" to get the game to work, even though I do not want to install a client on my computer.

GOG, what has happened to you? You used to be the bastion of the DRM-free world, and now you're turning your back on all of your supporters. :(
Are you serious? Holy shit.
avatar
IronArcturus: But I don't want to install this client. That's the whole point. If customers have to install the Galaxy client just to make a GOG game work, then that's DRM. GOG really needs to fix this problem.
I agree with you. People shouldn't have to install the client to be able to run their games. But I disagree on the DRM part in this case, because maybe it's not DRM (game works for people who a) have Galaxy, b) uninstalled Galaxy and c) never had Galaxy installed), but a bug caused by old Galaxy related AvP 2000 files. Now it's GOG's job to identify those files and to tell you how to remove them, or to tell the developer to patch the game, or to give you a refund. I'm just saying that installing Galaxy would give you a chance to do a clean uninstall which should remove all files.

If GOG would send me a Galaxy Uninstaller, I could use that to remove any possible remnants of Galaxy on my computer. Or GOG could tell me the exact locations where Galaxy installs itself, and I could manually delete it myself. But Support has not informed me of any information like that. Instead, they keep telling me over and over to install Galaxy, when they know I don't want to do this.

But I would still argue this is DRM, since I'm told repeatedly "just to install Galaxy" to supposedly fix this issue. No GOG customer should be forced to install a client to get a "DRM-free" game to work. This is an issue that GOG really needs to resolve.

LOL

Oh, how I miss T, though.

IronArcturus:
if the game is advertised / sold as drm free, yet requires the client to install it (by any means), and support tells you just to install the client to run the drm free game (thus making it a game that requires a client to run and thusly drm'd in this case), then thats false advertising and gog (as a european company) can get pretty badly fucked for that.

Absolutely. Unfortunately, there are a lot of issues GOG "needs to resolve" An entire list in fact, and it is only getting longer, since they resolve nothing, only introduce new problems. The Gold Box D&D games are awesome and all that, but honestly I'd rather have a repaired chat system, no gifting restrictions and no disturbing reports of forcing Galaxy upon users.

Grargar: Something bad has happened again and as per GOG's typical MO, there was nary a voice. So, what's on today's menu? Worldwide gifting restrictions. Remember Witcher 3's temporarily unavailable gifting status? Well, it seems that 4 months later, several other games have joined their brother. What does this mean? Simple; you can't buy any of the affected games as a gift, but you should still be able to redeem any giftcodes bought before today (24/08/2015). Which games are affected? The following ones:

1954 Alcatraz
Aarklash: Legacy
Agarest: Generations of War Zero
Age of Wonders 3 (Also the Deluxe Edition)
Alan Wake
Armikrog - Deluxe Edition
Back to the Future: The Game

Also, GOGmix.

While I do think that I have found all the games, I'm not 100% sure about this, so any omission should be reported with haste.

Grargar, signing out.
Oooh nooooo, this will put you out of business.Scabbing and begging.
Who is Tauto and what is his problem?
Dear GOD that's a long list!!! What's the reasoning behind it I wonder??

In that case, GOG should really invest some thought into doing the moneycard thing. A good chunk of sales happen from people gifting to others, I would imagine.
Why would they do this? So much business comes from gifts and it won't stop scammers/Russians unless all games are banned from gifting.

They are probably gradually leading up to it like they did with regional pricing their entire catalogue.

Doc0075: Who is Tauto and what is his problem?
Probably a scammer (or the alt of one) who's been outed by the unstoppable Fact Cat.

darkangelz: Is spreading misinformation the new thing?

Because what I found on the Necrodancer release thread was that the issue reported is a rare bug (as in not everyone is suffering from it) to be fixed when they can identify what's causing it.

avatar
awalterj: [...] the game should (and does) run without Galaxy client present on the system.

darkangelz:
Whew! Thank heavens. That is good to know, DarkAngelz. Thanks for clarifying the issue.

I must echo Geizterfahr's sentiments in this case. IronArcturus, this is a simple software development error. It is not a case of GOG suggesting that you implement something to enact DRM. You should install the client, never open or use it, and immediately uninstall it. Installing the client IS installing the uninstall program you need in this case - nothing more or less - and while I wholeheartedly agree that this is not something that you should be required to do, it is definitely the best, most-efficient way to solve your problem. I also believe that GOG should sympathize, refund your money and let you keep the game for free. It would be better for you and for them.
