Is spreading missinformation the new thing?
Because what i found on the necrodancer release thread was that the issue reported is a rare bug (as in not everyone is suffering from it) to be fixed when they can identify whats causing it.

catpower1980: I made a small test - uninstalled Galaxy, downloaded setup_crypt_of_the_necrodancer_2.0.0.1.exe via browser link and game works just fine for me...

log looks like this:
--------------------------------------------------------
WINDOW SUCCESSFULLY INITIALIZED
NecroDancer version v1.12 loading...
OnCreate: Initializing Steam
GoG: Initializing galaxy API
OnCreate: Updating screen size

so yes, it's trying to initialize Steam and GOG Galaxy, but when they are not found, game runs just fine without client too....

awalterj: What you are experiencing is a rare bug in the galaxy system. I would be grateful if you could contact support and give them exact details on how you can reproduce this problem.

We did not experience this problem anywhere during pre-release QA. Once we can reproduce the bug here we can work on fixing this, as the game should (and does) run without galaxy client present on the system.

IronArcturus: I was shocked as you are. I was always told that Galaxy was supposed to be optional, and now GOG Support is telling me the opposite. I sent a message to Judas about this, but I haven't received a response yet. It seems the fears about Galaxy becoming mandatory are now justified. :-/

GR00T: Keep us updated on this, please. I... don't know what to think. This is just crazy.
Ok, let's not go into allout panic mode yet. Maybe this was just a case of random support person doing what support people everywhere do best: try to avoid issuing refunds at all costs. "If the game works with Galaxy installed and customer won't install Galaxy even though they've been told to do so in order to solve their problem, then customer isn't elligible for a refund because they're ignoring offered solutions." Or something similar. Maybe. I hope.

Sorry guys, I appear to be a little late to the party this time... WHAT THE fuck IS GOING ON? Could someone please fill me in? Gifting restrictions? Games that require Galaxy to run? What? Why? Is this the time to download whatever you can and abandon ship?

Lin545: Basically, they went full Romero :)
First, I wanted to write "GOG is gonna make you its bitch. Suck it down.", but I feared some people wouldn't get it and feel offended.

ps. And now I see that it was "is about to make" and not "is gonna make" :P

You should always be prepared to abandon ship at a moment's notice, sailor!
It's time to buy all missing old games and move further. :(

I just want to game to load properly without trying to detect a client to load. This is the bug that many have run into. People keep telling me to look for "Galaxy" remnants on my computer, and I've checked the Registry, Services, Program Files/ProgramData and AppData folders, and haven't found Galaxy listed anywhere. Where else could it be hiding assuming it's on my computer at all?

If the game devs would just release a Windows version of Necrodancer that's similar to the Linux version, then this problem would be solved for everyone. But Support is basically telling me they're not going to tell the game devs to create a version that doesn't look for Galaxy. :-/

Probably, too much dope fish was there, at GOG HQ... : )

IronArcturus: Many are being hit by the Galaxy-DRM from GOG. In the case of Necrodancer, if the game thinks Galaxy is installed on a computer, even if it's not listed in the Registry or Services, the game will not launch at all. This is proved in the logs which list "GoG: Initializing galaxy API."
Strange, I just tried to install the game (Necrodancer) on a PC on which Galaxy never was installer, and both with network disable or enable it started without any issue and I was able to play it. I also tried on my other PC on which Galaxy is installed and the game run without issue even if I don't start Galaxy.

For info I also have the "GoG: Initializing galaxy API." even on my PC without Galaxy but it doesn't cause any issue and the game start... but the next line in the log is "Updating Screen size" so maybe it's what cause the game to crash on your computer.

IMO even if you don't want to use Galaxy, you should try to install it and try to run the game, even if it's to uninstall it right after, at least it will tell you if it's really Galaxy fault of if it's unrelated.

What Gersen said is a good idea. Another plus: It would give you the opportunity to do a clean Galaxy uninstall, hopefully removing those "remnants" that you maybe caught from AvP 2000.

IronArcturus: ..."install the Galaxy Client" to get the game to work...

GR00T: Wait, what? They're advising you that you need to install the fully optional client in order to get your DRM-free game to actually work? Well, I guess I don't see any issue with that... O_o
They called me a fool when I said this day would come. *Evil laugh sound*

But I don't want to install this client. That's the whole point. If customers have to install the Galaxy client just to make a GOG game work, then that's DRM. GOG really needs to fix this problem.

IronArcturus: This is all too true. Many are being hit by the Galaxy-DRM from GOG. In the case of Necrodancer, if the game thinks Galaxy is installed on a computer, even if it's not listed in the Registry or Services, the game will not launch at all. This is proved in the logs which list "GoG: Initializing galaxy API."

I've sent messages to Support asking them if there was a way to get the game to not load or detect Galaxy, and they said it wasn't possible. They won't even tell the game devs to create a Windows version that doesn't need Galaxy. Support kept telling me to "install the Galaxy Client" to get the game to work, even though I do not want to install a client on my computer.

GOG, what has happened to you? You used to be the bastion of the DRM-free world, and now you're turning your back on all of your supporters. :(
What, what, what?!?!? Not sure I can handle any more Good News™ today.

I've not been much on here lately, so I might have missed where this has been discussed. How long has it been since GOG Support told you to install the Galaxy Client? Reading through the release thread, it'd appear that it's a bug that GOG was looking into. Have they given up, or is GOG Support not aware of that?
