Inspired by classic Hack & Slash games like and turn-based RPGs like [url=https://www.gog.com/game/tales_of_majeyal]Tales of Maj’Eyal but with few different twists! Of Blades & Tails aims to be an accessible and entertaining Action-RPG with turn-based combat that allows for quick action or strategic planning. It’s set in an open, fantastic world with lots of places to discover and characters to meet. Now the game’s early access is available on GOG!

In this vibrant, pixel art land you play Reik, a clever member of the tribe of foxes. A chain of unfortunate events involves you in a quest of vital importance to all the peace-loving creatures of the realm. You will have to leave your home village and explore the world to become strong enough to stand up to evil. (In other words: There will be a main storyline but it's still in the making!)

I looks nice, but the characters could have at least 2-3 frames of animation, when moving. Because now it looks like moving the pieces of a board game.

My rep is -200 now somehow.
Looks like a low-budget Stoneshard. Could end up being a good game.

That didn't fix it.

Better but not perfect.

Not of an animal lover myself however the approach seems promising. Wondering if the story is very animalistic (save the world of animals on Earth or face the dire consequences), to the point it will push away the common Omnivorous.

Might be cool. I am going to keep an eye on this one.

GOG.com: Action-RPG with turn-based combat
Unless the game has more than one combat system, no. Those two criteria are contradictory, just like trying to talk about a turn-based RTS, or a third-person FPS.

Action.
Can.
Be.
Turn.
Based.

(and it is cool)
Hmm. I thought it looked promising at first, when I read "action-RPG" and thought it would be a Hack & Slash or possibly a platformer with RPG-like skill progression.

Seeing it is neither halved my interest. Seeing it has pretty much no animations killed it.

I'm with dtgreene on this one. Depends a bit on implementation, but if it's turn-based you usually won't have the sense of urgency and the need for quick reactions that are the hallmark of an action game.
Action could be turn-based I suppose, but I can't even remember the last time I saw a turn-based action game.

My point is that action *can't* be turn-based, in that those two descriptors are *contradictory*.

How?

Making it turn-based makes the game no longer an action game, and vice versa.

I Agree. People call things as much as they can get away with for advertisement reasons. Just look at RPGs and Roguelikes, more than half of them shouldn't be considered such.

Archon would like to have a word with you. ;-)

Just in case you don't know Archon: That's a turn based board game resembling chess where two game pieces that meet on the same field have to fight over the field.
Looks interesting - wishlisted for now.

That, one could argue, would fit into the category of games with multiple combat systems, in a sense.

Or, one could say that the action part is really a minigame, here.

(Also worth looking at Undertale, in this regard.)

Edit: For the record, yes, I have played Archon (NES version, if that matters), but it's been decades.
