Political Freedoms: Excellent (72)

The Free Land of Gogan is a massive, genial nation, ruled by Doctor Marcin with a fair hand, and renowned for its restrictive gun laws. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 2.194 billion are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it devotes most of its attentions to Education, with areas such as Religion & Spirituality and Defence receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 61%, and even higher for the wealthy. A robust private sector is dominated by the Book Publishing industry.

Contrails and thunderous rumbles have returned to the skies above, students are known to arrive at school in their pyjamas, every product goes through extensive safety-testing by the government, and the fire protection service is wholly government-funded. Crime is totally unknown. Gogan's national animal is the Goglodyte, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the Gog.

Gogan is ranked 4,186th in The North Pacific and 95,949th in the world for Largest Mining Sector, scoring -2 on the Blue Sky Asbestos Index.

The overview has been updated following the last decisions made.

Most Likely To Secede (issue 333)
A group of bearded militiamen have recently declared rural Marlon Goethe County a sovereign and independent nation! Gogan's talk radio pundits demand immediate government action.

1. "Gov'mint's not workin' fo' folks 'round here," says Jack Dubois, a turnip farmer, "We have ourselves a guar-un-teed right to form a gov'mint that works for us. We don't want any confrontation, now, we just want to shake hands and let ya'll get along with yer business while we get along with ours."

2. "I can't believe this!" shouts General Bill Sherman. "This is tantamount to treason! Our political system would collapse if whole territories were allowed to leave at any time. It would be chaos! I propose that you let me take care of the problem... permanently."

3. "Perhaps we can reach a suitable middle ground," says an elderly gentleman resting on a park bench, "If we were to bring government close to the people, and allow them to have a modicum of self-determination, perhaps they wouldn't feel the need to secede. Let's give the local governments more power."

4. "Our last caller made a really good point," says talk radio host Emily Unprotected. "These decent, hard working citizens are clearly being brainwashed by Gogan Public Radio's prattle. I don't want my tax Gogs supporting their agenda. Therefore, the answer is clear: dismantle Gogan Public Radio."

333:3 I like the number 3!
Hm. I'm missing the possibility of a referendum or some democratic decision. A militia declaring that some region is 'independent' is usually only the prelude to a military dictatorship. I the majority of the people of that region actually wants to secede - fine. So be it. But if it is only an armed minority we should protect the unarmed majority from the secessionist militia.

But since the possibility for a democratic decision is missing, lets assume the worst, send in the troops and see what happens. 333:2
(interesting experiment. How will a basically non-existent army fare against an untrained militia?

We're a few issues further by now :-P

Just a heads-up if you hit the wrong key for the option, too.
