An answer from an actual college student:

You can manage on not a lot. You'll be really damn hungry, but you can manage. If you're really strict you can spend about $2 a day on rice and potatoes. It's not healthy or very sustaining but if money is tight then it's your option outside of fast food dollar menus.

for $3 you can get 2 canned soups.
for $4 you can start mixing fruits and veggies, and depending on what you get can get enough to last for a few days.
for $5, you can do some actual cooking. I've made chicken soup that lasted me for 5 days on $20, chicken fajitahs for two days on $10, and chilli for 3 days on $15. This doesn't mean everything can be fresh though. I used canned meats and beans, and cheap veggies to keep to a budget. And if your soups don't look like they'll last long, add water and possibly a bouillon cube to keep the flavor from thinning.

Seasonings go a very long way to helping stave off boredom with your food, so make sure you get some salt, garlic powder, pepper, and something a little spicy to help vary up your food so that you don't get bored to the point of chasing down fast food.

Expect to spend 200+ if you want to eat three meals a day seven days a week, while hitting nutritional goals with a minimal amount of variety. I mean unless you are like five feet tall and bone thin, then you are gonna get along with far less. The best way to fail a class is to be hungry all the time.
