Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

Just playing around with the new client (0.7.0.860). I'm excited to see that GOG now has its own client, especially since it is optional.

The Galaxy client alpha really needs a "feedback" button in the app directly. But barring that, I'll post my thoughts here ;-)

I like the client; it's simple and fast and uncluttered. It also doesn't push the store at you as much as certain other clients.
And I'm sure that a lot of what I think is missing will be added in time (this is, after all, only beta). But just in case, here is a list of possible improvements

- Indicate the size of the game in megabytes. I would like to know this to help me decide a) whether I want to spend days downloading the progam, and b) the hard-drive to which I am going to install the game

- More Download controls - to throttle the speed, pause and resume. It should match the capabilities of the GOG Downloader

More installation options - specifically, where to install the game. While it is possible to set a default installation folder in settings, a per-game option would be useful, especially for larger games. "Create Start menu shortcuts" or "Create Desktop shortcuts" would be welcome as well.

Right-click options on installed games - Basically, all the options currently under the"More" button (e.g., configure, manual, uninstall, etc.) on the game's page should also be accessible via right-clicking the installed game on the left-side listing. This is especially true for the "Manage" options.

Text-only listing for Library - the pictures are pretty but I'd rather just a straight listing of the names. Especially since I have so many games, it would reduce the amount of scrolling I need to do ;-)

Full listing of all games in Library on one page - I'd like to be able to see my whole library without having to click through multiple pages

Font-size support - For those of us with bad eyes and big monitors, let us change the size of the fonts.

Store library listing locally - it appears that the client has to download the listing everytime I switch pages. Cache all that data in a database on my hard-drive already!

Remove transparency from menu bar on top - normally I like transparency effects but this time it adds to a sense of clutter and confusion, especially when scrolling through the library. Maybe just make it less transparent?

Manually Clear Message Queue - Right now the only way to clear the message queue (Game downloaded, etc) is to quit and restart the client

More Game Information - on each game's landing page, things like type of game, hardware requirements, whether it uses DOSBox, etc. would be welcome.

Just some ideas of the top of my head, but even if they never are implemented I love the client already. Seems fairly stable too; no apparent bugs.

OdanUrr: It would seem to work, yes, 'cause I wrote this from within Galaxy as well. =)

While trying to download the Jade Empire extras I now find that their names have changed to German (handbuch, hintergrundbilder, avatare, etc.). This is particularly odd since since the selected language is English. I tried changing the language and it's still in German.

distracted.130: I have Jade Empire as well. For me they are listed in English. For reference, mine is a new, clean, install of GOG Galaxy.

So far I am really liking the GOG Galaxy client. This makes my games much more accessible, especially for my wife.

Feature Request: It would be awesome to have a sortable/filterable 'year' field in the library.
Mine is also a new, clean, install of GOG Galaxy. I downloaded it about an hour ago.

Is there a way to check on a game's extras without downloading them?

From the short time I spent with the client so far: I like it. It is simple but effective and doesn't feel like throwing unnecessary information my way.
I really like the store pages for games, because they are simple and easy. Here is the game, here is what you get, here is our "about the game" text, here are user reviews. And on the right is every other information necessary. Simple and clear.
Obviously way too early to suggest changes but the only thing missing is an information whether the game has achievments or not. I know Witcher 2 has them, but there is no information on the store page. That really doesn't matter at all at this stage, just something I noticed.

I'd like to see the option to arrange my library however I want, and while downloading a game a "estimated time" information but so far this looks really good. And as I said: Those are features for the full release, not the alpha.

Looking good so far, downloaded a few games without any problems, well done.
Really liking Galaxy client so far, seems very streamlined and fast to use , cant wait to see it at its full potential :)
Automatic updating of Pillars of Eternity failed. It reads, "Installation Failed: Disk Access Problem."

You could try checking on the web site to make sure they are listed properly in your account. If they are listed properly there then I would say there is definitely something odd going on with the client.

It's just that when I click on the "More" button I get an option to download extras when I may just want to see them.
If I click the X to exit, I want to exit. Not minimize to the tray.

I'm fine with an opt-in option.

Design is my other suggestion. It needs to be smarter. Reviews crammed into a tiny column on the right with all this white space on the left? Two game lists when viewing my library?
I can't find a way to clear the "Forum Replies 'Unread Replies'" notification inside the client. Clicking on the notification directs me to a page with the relevant thread listed, but the notification persists.

Edit: It did eventually clear itself, but there was a significant delay.

Will we eventually be able to navigate Gog Galaxy with a joypad like Steam Big Picture mode?

If you select 'Download Extras' it will present you with a list. From there you can choose which, if any, you would like to download.

Edit: You probably knew this. If this isn't what you mean, I'm not sure what you are asking.

Ah, okay, I thought it was downloading because I'm also downloading the game. See when I chose to install the game it read "installed" almost immediately and I thought that was because I had downloaded the game already. Instead, the client started downloading the game again. Sorry for the mix-up!

It's a bit cumbersome, but if you select a game, then select More->Download Extras, you can view the size of the game itself. I do agree that the size should be more readily available. Maybe on the games store page, or in a dialog after choosing 'install'.

It is a little confusing. They should probably rename that menu entry to something like 'View Extras', 'Select Extras', 'Access Extras' or similar.

wormholewizards: Why does the client downloading a 200 MB size files for my Deadly Premonition? Is it downloading extra language options without my permission or am I missing something here?
Some games differ between older installations and current version in the Galaxy Content System. I cannot tell you what exactly was downloaded, but what you will have downloaded after the update is likely what is currently in the last version of standalone installer or what will be in the next version of standalone installer (what I'm basically saying is that over time, differences between what you install from standalone installer and using Galaxy will disappear, but today they sometimes exist).

OdanUrr: Well, Galaxy is currently updating Dragonfall for me and I can't find an option to turn it off so it seems to be automatic at this time.
Click MORE and select CONFIGURE for any game :). Soon you will have an option to disable auto updating all together... which doesn't mean you won't get the updates - you will get notification of updates available and choice of applying them manually (which all in all is more work but some folks will surely prefer it that way)
Where do we report bugs?
