Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

- Option to keep saves, when uninstalling a game
- Windows: starting the client when another instance is already running should now open the running instance (rather than displaying error message)

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

1 .I installed and launched Broken Age - everything went fine.

2. I let Galaxy scan my current "GOG Games" folder and it managed to find Grim Fandango Remastered and Hotline Miami 2. It didn't find Rayman Origins, Resonance and Gods Will Be Watching. I don't know if it depends on the version installed but I must mention that I haven't updated those games for a long long while.

3. The most important thing: the interface is utter utter beauty. It reminds me of Origin in the best possible ways but is even cleaner and also much more functional (especially in the storefront department). Also, the client doesn't connect to AppNexus every couple of seconds, so that's a bonus.

IronArcturus: Does the latest version of Galaxy Alpha allow the user to choose which folders to install? In a previous post, a user mentioned that Galaxy would only install in the D: drive and the "ProgramData" folder.
Yes, you can choose your install location. I'm assuming you are referring to the client itself.

Edit: You can also specify an install location for your games, temp files, and extras.

Senteria: I have a question.

If galaxy goes into the beta phase is this a slow gradual phase where our alpha client will slowly become a beta client? Or will the alpha users/testers have to download a complete new galaxy client and add all their games in it again? I'm asking this because I'm busy all day trying to get my games into the galaxy client. I already downloaded 13gb of content of games that I had already installed.
It should all update nicely and without any hiccups :). The only incompatibility so far were games with DLC downloaded before 0.7 - these had to be re-downloaded in 0.7 again. Other than that we had no issues like that and don't plan to have :)

Thanks for kind feedback. Regarding #2 - please check my sticky post on top.

Could you post a screenshot of the interface? I'm curious to see what the Galaxy Alpha actually looks like.

If you are curious, sign up for the alpha.

I'm still reading up on everything before I do that. The last time I used "Galaxy" was before it was an Alpha. It was just an additional program with AvP 2000.

IronArcturus: Are there any screenshots of Galaxy Alpha by any chance?
There are not supposed to be any since GOG has asked that people to not make screencaps outside of for reporting purposes on Mantis. But I am sure someone has done it somewhere, just like there are a few clowns on Youtube that made "look at" videos of the Alpha client. Seriously what was the point in making a damn video? It is in a early unfinished state and plus who wants to watch a video of someone going over a damn Digital game store client anyway then again unboxing videos are a popular thing so much so that even unpacking virtual stuff like on Hearthstone and WWE Supercards are popular as well and don't get me started on the popularity of baking videos where the person eats the stuff at the end. So I guess there maybe weirdos that are into watching people fiddle around with digital store clients.

Will GOG show any screenshots with the Beta?

Probably, I wouldn't see why they wouldn't since it will be a public Beta so everyone can see it anyway.

As for right now, there isn't much to see anyway it's a basic client with a Steam style layout(closet thing I can think of to compare it to visually, I don't use many clients outside of Origin, Steam and this one) with your games on the side and tabs on the top for library, store, ect..

I quite like it so far. Interface is very easy to get around.

It appears to have crashed my computer earlier this morning (not bad, just a clean, forced reboot), and I'm having highly variable results on importing already-installed games (and is it normal for it to create an extra desktop icon when you already have one...?), but I chalk these up to it being a work-in-progress. Games I've tried playing through the client seem okay so far.

As I understand it, the beta will be open to the public. In which case you can just download it and try for yourself. If you don't want to, presumably there will be no restrictions on screenshots if the beta is open to the public.
Oh dear. I added symphony manually and it checked my directX and it came back with an error. :(
However it seems everything works fine. Weird.

So.. I got an email from GOG 'inviting' me to check out the Galaxy client, with a clickable 'here's your code' link to get the alpha.

But.. I don't care about any multiplayer and would just be wasting time 'testing' that.

Are the 'other parts' (non-multiplayer aspects) also being tested? Are they well-enough along to be worth testing?

Yes, you can use to among other things download/install games.
